Chapter 11: Chapter 11 War Begins!

"What?!"

Anton's face twisted in anger. "You're telling me that Eddie has been taken by the Life Foundation?"

Even over the phone, Phil could feel the heat of Anton's fury.

But after what had just happened, Phil understood the importance of courage. He responded firmly, "Before he was taken, Eddie managed to leave us video footage from inside Homeless Haven."

"Video footage?"

Anton's brows furrowed. "Explain everything right now."

After listening to Phil's explanation, he forced himself to calm down.

"Send the footage over," Anton instructed. "And Phil, stay in San Francisco, keep a close eye on the Life Foundation, and report any updates."

"Understood," Phil replied.

Minutes later, Anton received the footage from Phil and quickly watched it through, his expression growing darker by the second.

The raw images left an undeniable impact.

He could vividly imagine Eddie, trapped among the homeless, forced into this grim existence.

"Homeless Haven… Carlton Drake, I thought I had you figured out, but you're even more ruthless than I expected!"

"Well done, Eddie! Now, it's my turn to take over," Anton murmured to himself.

Without a second thought, he booked a red-eye flight back to New York.

Before leaving, he gathered the assistant, a few of the assistant directors, actors, and other crew members for an emergency meeting.

At the meeting, Anton announced he had urgent matters to handle and would be leaving the set.

As filming was already in its final stages, he assured the team that they could finish the remaining work independently.

By this point, more than half a month had passed since Eddie initially lost contact. During that time, the film had made substantial progress, and now only required finishing touches.

Even scenes featuring the lead role, Batman/Bruce Wayne, had largely been shot.

Anton had every confidence in leaving the final tasks to his capable team.

As he departed, the assistant directors and crew members escorted him with respectful smiles, each swearing to complete filming within 20 days.

Special effects were also progressing steadily. With Anton's design sketches in hand, the effects team could continue their work without him, only needing his approval for the final cut.

With everything in place, Anton boarded his flight to New York.

The following morning, Jim discovered that Anton had returned to New York, leaving the crew in his hands. He was beside himself with frustration, but as Anton was both director and primary investor, there was nothing he could do except oversee the crew and prevent anyone from slacking off.

Anton arrived in New York at dawn, where Betty had been waiting at the airport for some time.

She spotted him from afar, her expression icy as she glanced his way. She clearly wasn't pleased to be woken up at such an ungodly hour to pick him up—especially when it was her boss who had called her in.

"Betty, I am your boss. Couldn't you at least pretend to be happy to see me?" Anton joked as he climbed into the passenger seat of her BMW. "Remember, it's me signing off on that salary of yours—one that's well above 90% of what people your age make."

"Technically, the paper belongs to Jonah Jameson, not Anton Jameson," Betty shot back.

"All the same, Jameson is Jameson. So by default, the paper's practically mine, don't you think?"

Moments later, as they neared the Daily Bugle building, Anton grinned. "You're not alone in feeling this way right now."

"What do you mean?" Betty looked confused.

Parking the car, she followed him into the building and suddenly understood his words.

The Daily Bugle's office was brightly lit, even though it was the middle of the night.

Lights shone everywhere, making it seem like midday.

Every employee was at their desk, even the interns—none missing.

Most of them wore expressions of impatience and irritation.

"Anton, what's going on?" Betty asked, her sense of foreboding growing. She had never experienced anything like this before.

Neither had the other employees, who also seemed bewildered by being summoned to the office in the middle of the night.

It dawned on them, just as it had on Betty, that something big was happening.

"I called you all here tonight because I have an announcement to make."

Anton's voice was calm, almost devoid of emotion.

"Tomorrow's front page is being scrapped."

He spoke with absolute authority, leaving no room for dissent.

As he spoke, he set up the shared projector, displaying the footage Eddie had risked everything to capture.

Gasps filled the room.

Realizing that this footage was going to replace tomorrow's front page, they quickly forgot their grievances, eyes glued to the screen, not daring to look away.

"As you can see, this is tomorrow's front page!" Anton announced, his gaze sharp as he scanned the room.

No one dared to meet his eyes.

After a moment, their faces turned grim, brows furrowed in concern.

One of them hesitated, unsure of what to say.

"Where is this?" Betty finally asked after a long silence.

Then it dawned on her, "This… this must be Eddie's fieldwork!"

"Eddie? This is Eddie's work?"

"That's right! He's the only one who's been out on assignment since he arrived. Who else could have gotten this footage? One of the clueless interns?"

Everyone quickly arrived at the same conclusion.

Eddie had gone on assignment almost immediately after joining the Daily Bugle, and had been gone for nearly a month without any word. If it weren't for the lack of any formal announcement, people would have assumed Eddie had quit or been fired for displeasing Anton.

And yet, they couldn't understand why Eddie, the paper's chief editor, would be out in the field. Editors usually directed work from their offices; they didn't typically go into the field themselves.

But when they remembered Eddie's background, it all made sense.

When it came to fieldwork and investigative skills, none of them could compete with Eddie.

After years as a top journalist, Eddie had been personally chosen by the ever-picky Jonah Jameson to be promoted to editor. Eddie's talent was undeniable.

If he hadn't angered Carlton Drake in San Francisco, Eddie could have made a name for himself anywhere.

"The footage speaks for itself. I don't need to explain much," Anton said. "This is a scandal tied to the Life Foundation—that same organization in San Francisco that Eddie had conflicts with. They've been covertly signing fake 'volunteer agreements' and conducting inhumane experiments on the homeless. Eddie lost his job and was blacklisted because he tried to expose Drake."

He took a deep breath and continued, "Eddie filmed this footage by infiltrating Homeless Haven, and now he's been taken by the Life Foundation. To ensure his safety, we need to release this material immediately, ignite public outrage, and prevent them from continuing their atrocities."

"So listen up. We're scrapping tomorrow's front page."

Then, in a steely voice, he concluded, "From this moment on, The Daily Bugle is at war with the Life Foundation!"
