Chapter 19: Thief Kitten
Many things had to be thought about, new ideas came and went the more time passed without any intention of stopping. Many new inventions could be made and many things about my abilities that I thought I knew had to be revised.
My first version of a hair clipper ended up being a failure but it created something new that could still be used as well as being easy to produce, the general problem was that it wasn't very anatomically comfortable. I needed to use something more flexible to coat and soft.
"How are we doing here?" Charlotte, a broke but brilliant brat I'd met, was working on some prototypes I'd requested. She was currently focusing on a bicycle made of wood.
"Too expensive, doesn't last. All terrible to be honest." Her optimism was infectious, so infectious that I wanted to punch her in the face. But I restrained myself from just slapping her on the back of the head.
"Hey!" In this godforsaken room in a terrible mess she worked, I don't know how she survives here.
"Problems with the material again?" That was the only answer I could think of, more important than the idea and the fundamentals was the ability to realize it with the materials at hand. If great minds had been born at the right time, the advances were much greater with better materials at hand.
"The wood I used is cheap and falls apart very quickly. The other option was expensive and very heavy. It may be useful, but the return will not be as good as expected."The project would suddenly become more expensive if we simply tried to buy what we needed, we had to look for alternatives.
In fact, she didn't have a penny and I didn't give her any money... where did this idiot get the wood from?Holy shit, don't tell me she went after loan sharks again! I barely got rid of a few and I was sure more would come later.
"Just to fucking clarify, where did you get the wood? And for the love of God, you better think about every word of your damn answer." She looked away, her best response could only be silence, that way she wouldn't be killed by her poor choice of words.
"Better talk soon."She sighed looking at me defeated.
"It wasn't loan sharks this time. You know how it is, sometimes you're walking along the streets, feeling the smell of street food in the breeze and out of nowhere a pile of wood appears in front of you fooling around Invitingly."In short, she stole...Less worse, I'll just ignore it
"What if we look for an investor or a better supplier?" Having a contract with someone could work unprecedented miracles.
"No one will accept anything from me. If you have any contact, it's up to you." I hate dealing with her, that little brat can't solve anything on her own.
"I don't know the surroundings, just take me to a good supplier and let me sort myself out. I'm good at these things after all." I couldn't help but give a confident smile, a god could come and go from anywhere with a little aura. Everyone would stop to applaud as I got what I wanted without complications.
"I've got someone in mind, but are you sure? things could get a bit ugly and I'll just run away, I warn you." I couldn't help rolling my eyes as I imagined the scene.
"It's not a crime boss, are?"
"No..."
"Then why be afraid?" She just huffed and got up and walked to the door, waving at me.
"I think it's time you learned that there are worse things than criminals." What could be worse than an outlaw? What a weird world these people are in, or is it this girl who's still not right in the head?
We walked with smooth conversations about academic content, further improving our knowledge and solidifying promising ideas while abandoning bad ones; all in preparation for speaking with the utmost confidence to whoever was going to receive us.
As expected, we were heading for the outer ring of Orario, but in a rather beautiful and rich area, with many well-kept trees planted along the way. The ground we walked on was a pure white that looked as if it had never been used.
The distinct view from where we left, which was full of mud and dirt with rats and cockroaches everywhere, contrasted with the place of wealth. The empty streets replaced by the movement of bourgeoisie, with a police force surrounding the area ensuring everyone's safety.
Here I couldn't make a mess like I've done in other places, I couldn't just break into the homes of ill-bred little girls like I've done in the past. I'd have to be a bit more civilized.
I think the idea of using aura will end up backfiring, better to abandon that now.
"These people are pretty rich, huh?" The rebellious girl next to me just agreed. The agricultural industry seemed well developed and running at full steam. After all, Orario was a big city and imports would be slow enough for any food to rot and it wouldn't be enough for such a large population, so they needed to produce everything close by or within the city.
A guard on the prowl spotted us, his eyes resting on the girl next to me who winced at the sight. She was already preparing to take off running, and as she turned to run, I grabbed her by the collar.
"I brought you, let me go!" She fought as hard as she could, but her strength was tiny compared to mine. The guard, realizing that I had grabbed her, approached more calmly.
"Thank you for your help, sir, we've been looking for this girl for a long time. She keeps coming here to steal." Should I be surprised?not really. What could be worse for a criminal than the police?I saw this coming from afar, she has to improve her acting.
"What a surprise! I had no idea I was hanging out with a wanted criminal!" I could feel her teeth biting my hand.
"Let go of me!" But instead of letting go, I pulled her up like a cat by the scruff of her neck.
"It's good that you warned me, imagine if someone saw and thought I was one of those filthy criminals.thank you very much!"
"No need sir, I thank you. She's very aggressive, I'll have her arrested immediately." I simply nodded my head in denial.Damn, I wanted to save money to buy lingerie for Bela and I still have to keep my poor lover Hestia.Keeping so many girls is expensive, you know!
"I'll take responsibility for her, just tell me the price of the things I'll pay." The girl was shocked, my face was stoic as usual. Even the guard seemed strange about it. Of course it was strange, a poor girl like that shouldn't have any supporters, much less a blood relative willing to help.
She was supposed to be a fucked up orphan like any common prostitute.
"Well, in that case I need to check how much you owe us. This might take some time…" I looked at the nearby mansion.
"I imagine the owners are there, right?" The guard agreed.
"Take me there and I'll discuss this in person." The man still didn't know how to react to those statements.
"I understand your good will, but it is beneath me to decide. And the case itself isn't that serious…" my expression turned ugly.
"How could it not be? This is a terrible loss for you! If they let the rats come and go as they please, they will soon go bankrupt! and what would my face look like with all this? I would be to blame for your downfall and I would have to carry this shame for a thousand years!" The man gradually choked on his own words. My every gesture carried a strong desire to erase the guilt.
"I will not be able to sleep until I obtain forgiveness! otherwise I'd rather die right here!"I pulled out his sheathed sword, scaring everyone and bringing it to my neck.Everyone went into shock.
I'm just kidding guys, chill.
