Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Tricking the Chip
"Why do you keep staring at that damn gun of yours?"
Lin Yue stopped caressing the sniper rifle. "How did you see that?"
Hamster: "..."
"Oh, I forgot all the cameras here are connected to your brain." Lin Yue scratched his head. The weighty feel of a real gun wasn't something a figurine could replace. What's wrong with touching it?
Though he hadn't fired a single shot yet.
But speaking of which—
Damn!
Is an Intelligence stat of 4 really that obvious?
"Seriously, buddy, level with me—have you ever been in a life-or-death situation? Or, you know, been in a shootout?"
Hamster was growing increasingly convinced that the idiot in front of him was unreliable. The guy's eyes clearly lacked the experience of someone who'd seen real action. How could he possibly feel at ease?
"We were transporting goods, and the truck got blown up. I was thrown out—then there was a car chase with my buddies, missiles flying, and a few bursts later, the mercs on the other side couldn't even lift their heads. Does that count?"
"And I did come from the Umbra Hounds, after all."
Lin Yue shot back irritably.
"Alright, impressive! I'll keep an eye on the hacker on the other side."
Hamster went back to his work in cyberspace.
Lin Yue stroked his chin, wondering if the hacker in Maine's squad was the only one. Was it Kiwi? Or the little girl with white hair and colorful ends—
Damn this forgetful brain of his. He hadn't brushed up on the history of this squad before his transmigration.
But based on his familiarity with this world before his transmigration, 2075 was probably not Lucy. It was most likely Kiwi.
A mature woman, huh?
Lin Yue shook his head. He had no idea how this cyberpunk squad would come after him and Hamster.
He was freaking out.
Tech sniper rifle, charge and penetrate. Lin Yue looked at the trigger of the big gun. He really wanted to know if holding the trigger down would charge it, or if the process of pulling it would.
This was important, because firing a sniper rifle was a matter of seconds.
If only he could test fire it here. The gun shop owner was afraid Lin Yue's big gun would blast through the target and the concrete wall, so he absolutely refused to let him try.
As for firing it on the street, the Umbra Hounds' exosuits would turn him into Swiss cheese.
The original owner of Lin Yue's body had only handled rifles and pistols. He wasn't a sniper in the Umbra Hounds barracks.
Hey! Speaking of which, there was a way to get a few shots in.
Lin Yue's eyes lit up.
"Hamster, can I ask you something?"
"Hmm." Hamster was still busy, humming a noncommittal sound.
"With a tech sniper rifle, does it charge while you're pulling the trigger, or after you've fully pressed it down?"
Dead silence.
Only the beeping and whirring of servers and equipment.
"Are you kidding me, buddy?"
Lin Yue thought seriously for a moment. "No."
Hamster, who hadn't gotten up from his hacking chair since entering, sat up. He pulled the wire from the back of his neck, his modified cybernetic eyes glowing like "Master Yi's," his mouth hanging open.
"You motherf—!"
Lin Yue looked innocent. "In the Umbra Hounds, I only used rifles. What's wrong with asking? Don't worry, my aim's pretty good."
"Do you know why Mr. Hands gave you a sniper rifle?"
Lin Yue nodded. "Yeah, snipers can handle multiple targets, buy time, right?"
"And you don't know how to use it? What the hell! Why would Mr. Hands even trust you with a sniper rifle?"
Lin Yue watched Hamster, who was pacing back and forth, yelling.
This guy's emotions were all over the place.
If bullets were flying, Lin Yue would be the first to take them.
"Calm down, buddy!" Hamster muttered to himself, as if trying to soothe his own nerves.
What a man with no sense of security. Lin Yue slowly shook his head and said,
"Those turrets outside are Zetatech, right? And with your personality, I'm guessing there are Zeta turrets in the backyard too? That means I'm the one taking bullets first. Even if I'm dead, you'll still have time to wait for the Umbra Hounds to show up."
Lin Yue was just asking a question. The guy's reaction was way over the top.
"You don't get it, do you? The point is, you need to stay alive, you idiot!" Hamster was furious.
"But you've got to deal with the hacker on the other side."
Lin Yue replied indifferently.
"Fine, fine, you win!" Hamster nodded, giving Lin Yue a "you've got me" look.
A chip flew out of Hamster's hand, and Lin Yue quickly caught it.
"This is Militech stuff. I modified it with Arasaka tech. It's got simulated records of a corporate sniper's behavior and biometrics. You can also use it to learn—"
"Damn it, I knew that old fox Mr. Hands was up to no good!"
Hamster knew full well he was being forced to cough up something valuable.
The chip in Lin Yue's hand felt like a trophy. Hamster, furious, tossed it over and lay back in his hacking chair, refusing to communicate further.
[Incoming Call: Mr. Hands]
"Young man, you should be at my friend's place by now, right?"
Lin Yue nodded. "Yeah, I'm here, and I've got the chip."
Hamster, in the hacking chair, clenched his fists.
Mr. Hands sounded surprised:
"That miser got his hands on my good stuff for a low price, said he'd study it for a few days. Haven't heard from him in months."
"I didn't have much hope, but you actually got it back! I'll count it as your merit. Just bring it to me later."
"Hanson's got Umbra Hound patrols nearby. Let's keep up the act—it's best to keep things civil. Once they get the fake data, they'll give up."
Lin Yue nodded.
"By the way, there'll be a surprise tonight. I hope you can protect yourself." Mr. Hands hesitated but said it anyway.
A surprise? Lin Yue was a bit confused.
"Good luck, my friend." Mr. Hands hung up.
Lin Yue thought for a while but eventually gave up.
Right now, the most important thing was to plug this chip into the slot at the back of his neck and learn some sniper skills.
After all, Maine's cyberpunk squad didn't mess around.
Lin Yue muttered to himself as he inserted the chip. The hacker's basement was soon enveloped in a faint light screen.
[Please adapt your weapon. Detecting...]
[Tech Sniper Rifle, confirmed.]
[Please empty the magazine and ensure there is no possibility of firing. Militech's detection system will monitor for you...]
Lin Yue followed the steps and unloaded the bullets.
The surroundings quickly turned dim, and a three-dimensional scene made of single lines appeared.
Lin Yue's cyberware, including his brain-computer interface, began to absorb behavioral data. It was as if an experienced sniper was teaching him how to hold the gun, how to fire each shot, and other details that usually took a long time to learn.
Now, corporations had made it possible to train qualified soldiers in a short time.
[Please attempt to fire.]
Hum—Bang!
Lin Yue pulled the trigger. The big gun emitted a faint hum while charging, and once he released the trigger, a powerful surge of energy erupted from the barrel!
[Step one: Sniper's position selection. Follow the tutorial data to choose a favorable position.]
Lin Yue followed the steps. Thanks to his experience as an Umbra Hound soldier, he quickly understood these concepts with the help of the tutorial.
In the process, Lin Yue also realized that this was only training for a standard sniper.
There was a difference between being an ordinary sniper and a seasoned one.
What Lin Yue lacked was the experience of the gunfire-ridden streets and the military confrontations in the badlands.
But it was enough.
In the basement, a young man immersed in training with a chip in his neck and a hacker lying in a chair with a wire plugged in—the scene was bizarre and quiet...
