Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Foundation Work

The morning sun had barely risen over Shimotsuki Village when construction of the new forge setup began. Xiao Yan carefully arranged his materials while Kozaburo examined the plans they'd discussed yesterday.

"Has anyone seen Zoro?" Kuina's voice carried from outside. "He said he was coming to watch the forge work."

"He left the dojo ten minutes ago," Taro replied, sorting tools with unusual focus. "Said he knew exactly where the forge was."

"It's one straight path!" Kuina sighed. "How does he...? Never mind, I'll find him. He's probably halfway to the harbor by now."

Xiaojin, perched regally on a beam above, let out a soft chirp that sounded suspiciously like laughter. The phoenix had been watching their preparations with ancient eyes, its flames occasionally shifting color when certain materials were brought together.

"SHAHAHAHAHA!" Shanks' laughter announced his arrival. "Found your missing student, Kuina! He was quite convinced the forge had moved closer to the lighthouse overnight."

The captain's casual demeanor didn't quite hide his sharp observation of their work. His eyes lingered on certain arrangements of metal, noting patterns that spoke of purposes beyond simple forge construction.

"Interesting design," Benn commented, lighting his morning cigarette. "Those channels seem meant for more than just heat distribution."

"Every smith has their methods," Xiao Yan replied carefully, though he appreciated the vice-captain's perceptive nature.

"Methods that require East Blue steel, South Blue copper, AND my grandfather's special alloys?" Kuina asked, returning with a slightly embarrassed Zoro. "Even I know that's unusual."

"I wasn't lost," Zoro muttered. "The village keeps rearranging itself."

"Sure it does," Kuina rolled her eyes. "Just like how the dojo 'moved' during yesterday's training."

Their banter was interrupted by the arrival of Koushirou, carrying what appeared to be ancient scrolls. "Father, I found those texts you mentioned. Though some of these forging techniques haven't been used in generations."

"Sometimes old ways reveal new truths," Kozaburo nodded, examining the scrolls. His eyes met Xiao Yan's briefly, carrying unspoken understanding about combining different approaches to power.

A commotion from the harbor drew their attention. Xiaolong had apparently decided that helping the fishing fleet meant creating a lightning barrier to herd fish, much to the fascination of local fishermen.

"Your dragon has interesting ideas about fishing," Shanks grinned, though his eyes held careful assessment. "Almost as interesting as these forge modifications you're planning."

The morning progressed with careful construction. Each piece was placed with precise purpose - appearing to be simple forge improvements while actually laying groundwork for something more profound. The spiritual bead in Xiao Yan's dantian hummed steadily, approving of how different powers were being woven together.

"The base metal needs to be purer," Kozaburo mused, examining a particularly crucial section. "Taro, run to the storage and bring the sealed box marked with three waves."

"I'll help!" Zoro offered, standing up.

"NO!" came the unanimous response.

"The storage is literally behind the forge," Kuina pointed out. "How could you possibly... never mind. I'll go with him."

As they worked, Xiao Yan noticed how different aspects of power manifested. The way Shanks unconsciously channeled Haki when handling certain metals, how Kozaburo's traditional techniques carried echoes of something deeper, even how Zoro and Kuina's presence seemed to affect the flow of energy in subtle ways.

"Your improvements," Benn noted quietly during a break, "they seem designed to handle different types of power. Almost like you're building something that bridges various approaches to strength."

"Perspective often depends on where one stands," Xiao Yan replied diplomatically, impressed again by the vice-captain's insight.

The day continued with steady progress, interrupted occasionally by village life. Mika brought lunch, commenting that Xiao Gui had finally stopped sampling her storehouse - only to start studying the dojo's foundation instead. Uta's songs kept the workers' spirits high, while Xiaojin's flames provided precisely controlled heat when needed.

As evening approached, the foundation work was complete. To most observers, it looked like an advanced but traditional forge setup. Only a few might notice how certain elements seemed designed for purposes yet unrevealed.

"Tomorrow we begin the real work," Kozaburo announced, his eyes carrying both excitement and understanding. "Though perhaps we should wait until Zoro finds his way back from wherever he wandered off to this time."

"He was just here!" Taro looked around confused.

"He said he was getting water from the well," Kuina sighed, already heading toward the village outskirts. "Somehow I suspect he's reached the cliff side by now..."

As the sun set, Xiao Yan reviewed their progress. The groundwork was laid - not just for crafting, but for bringing different understandings of power together in ways this world rarely saw. The spiritual bead pulsed gently, anticipating tomorrow's developments.

Though perhaps they should post direction signs around the village first. Even Xiaojin seemed concerned about Zoro's latest attempt to "take a shortcut" home.
