Cultivation in the Pirate's World

Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Morning Match

Dawn painted Shimotsuki Village in gentle hues as people gathered at the dojo's training ground. The news of a match between Master Koushirou and Red-Hair Shanks had spread quickly, bringing curious villagers and excited students alike.

"Grandfather," Kuina's voice carried across the yard as she helped prepare the training ground. "Will you be watching too?"

Kozaburo, who had been discussing something with Xiao Yan, turned to his granddaughter with familiar affection. "Missing my chance to see your father remind a pirate about proper sword form? Not likely."

Young Zoro, already practicing in a corner despite the early hour, paused his swings to watch the exchange. His grip on the wooden sword tightened with barely contained excitement.

"SHAHAHAHAHA! Proper sword form?" Shanks arrived with his characteristic grin. "I seem to remember winning our last drinking contest, old man!"

"That was sake, not swordsmanship," Kozaburo retorted, though his eyes held amusement. "Besides, my granddaughter here could probably outdrink you these days."

"Grandfather!" Kuina protested, though she couldn't hide her smile.

Xiao Yan observed the family dynamics with interest while maintaining his focus on the upcoming display. Xiaojin perched above, its divine flames burning steady gold in anticipation. Even Xiaolong had surfaced near the dojo's pond, scales shimmering with curiosity.

As Koushirou and Shanks took their positions, a hush fell over the gathered crowd. Xiao Yan's senses sharpened, ready to analyze every aspect of their movement and power flow.

The first exchange came without warning. Shanks' blade, wrapped in the invisible force of Haki, met Koushirou's perfectly angled parry. The impact sent ripples of power through the air that most couldn't see but Xiao Yan felt distinctly.

"Father's not using his usual style," Kuina muttered, her eyes tracking every movement with practiced understanding.

"Because he can't," Zoro replied, equally focused. "Look at how the pirate's sword moves - there's something else there."

Xiao Yan noticed how Haki flowed through Shanks' body in specific patterns, not unlike qi circulation but following different principles. Each strike carried power that seemed to extend beyond physical force, yet remained perfectly controlled.

The exchange continued, each movement revealing more about both styles. Koushirou's traditional techniques adapted smoothly to counter Haki-enhanced strikes, while Shanks' seemingly casual movements carried devastating potential barely held in check.

"The force extends beyond the blade," Xiao Yan murmured, noting how Haki created patterns in the air itself. The spiritual bead in his dantian hummed softly as he observed these flows, suggesting possibilities he'd need to consider carefully.

A particularly powerful clash sent sparks flying. Xiaojin chirped appreciatively at the display, while several students gasped at the sheer speed of the exchange.

"They're both holding back," Kozaburo commented quietly. "Though in different ways. My son-in-law restricts himself to traditional forms, while your captain... he contains his Haki to avoid damaging the training ground."

The match continued, each movement adding to Xiao Yan's understanding. The way Haki flowed through body and blade, how it responded to will and intention - there were principles here that resonated with cultivation techniques in unexpected ways.

Uta's voice rose suddenly in song, adding an otherworldly quality to the display. The combination of her melody and the rhythmic clash of blades created something almost mystical.

"Show-off," Kuina muttered as Shanks added a particularly flashy flourish to his next movement.

"Says the girl who practices waterfall cuts at midnight," Kozaburo teased his granddaughter gently.

The morning light strengthened as the match approached its conclusion. Both combatants moved with unchanged precision, though Xiao Yan noticed subtle changes in their Haki and energy flows as the session progressed.

Something about those changes caught his particular interest. The way power adapted and flowed, especially during extended exercise... perhaps there were insights here that could prove valuable for his future projects.

The match ended with both participants sharing grins of genuine appreciation for each other's skill. As the crowd began to discuss what they'd witnessed, Xiao Yan's mind was already processing the patterns he'd observed.

But that analysis would have to wait. For now, they had a full day ahead at the forge, and judging by the glint in Kozaburo's eye, the morning's display had inspired some interesting plans for their work.

Though first, someone should probably stop Xiao Gui from conducting its own investigation of the dojo's support beams...
