Chapter 90
In the treehouse of the Three Great Tribes.
“What’s going on?” The man’s voice was calm, devoid of any discernible emotion.
The subordinate cautiously replied, “You instructed us to search casually because we’re not very familiar with the Green Forest Land, and it was getting dark. We thought it would be better to wait until daylight to go, which would be more convenient. Unexpectedly, when we sent people there today, we found that the small tribe seemed to have already found the person…”
“Heh,” the man curled his lips, but there was no hint of amusement in his eyes. “You knew the location beforehand but couldn’t find the person, yet someone else found them first? Didn’t you say that the small tribe has been searching for people in the Thousand Beasts and nearby lands? How did they suddenly run to the Green Forest Land? And they found the person overnight?”
The subordinate’s voice trembled slightly. “Um, I… I don’t know…”
“Good job with the ‘I don’t know’,” the man clapped twice, stood up, walked to the window, and casually admired the scenery outside as he played with the branches. “Their intelligence is so keen. Is it because you didn’t do your job properly, or is there a mole among us?”
The subordinate’s face turned pale in an instant, panic engulfing him. Both options meant death for him.
“N-No, absolutely not. It might just be a coincidence…” he stuttered, his voice filled with extreme anxiety.
“Is that so?” The man didn’t turn around, speaking softly as if he wasn’t angry.
Hearing the man’s relatively gentle attitude, the subordinate calmed down slightly. “Yes…”
“Let’s just pretend I believe your nonsense.” The man suddenly turned around, his gaze piercing like a sword aimed at the trembling man on the ground. “That small tribe happened by chance. Now tell me, how did the tribe of the person you captured disappear from the city overnight?!”
The subordinate’s mind went blank.
The man bent down, lifting the trembling man’s chin, his calm face twisting slightly, whispering like a demon, “You can’t even kill a person when ordered to?”
Tears streamed down the subordinate’s face, rendering him speechless.
“If he can survive, let’s see if you’re lucky enough to survive too. Bring him in!” The man let go of the trembling man’s chin and sat back on the couch.
Two burly men with bulging muscles walked in.
“Clean up this mess,” the man said indifferently.
The subordinate’s pupils contracted sharply. Before he could even cry out for mercy, a burly man covered his mouth and dragged him away.
The treehouse returned to tranquility.
The man’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, lost in thought.
Shortly after, he called someone else in and whispered a few words in a low voice…
—
Though the days spent away weren’t very long, Lu Yu truly felt what it meant to long for home. The pace of their journey was brisk, and while Er Dai was an ordinary person without any training, he naturally couldn’t keep up. Fortunately, they had the wooden plank cart to carry him.
Thinking about the cart, Lu Yu couldn’t help but feel a bit regretful. When they came, the elders of the Valley mentioned that some lands had tamed horses. He had hoped to learn that skill or at least buy some horses to take back. However, after traversing all the lands, they didn’t come across a single horse. It seemed that the lands with horses hadn’t participated in the great drift, so the plan to establish a cavalry had to be temporarily abandoned.
In the rear of the group, Er Dai sat on the wooden cart feeling embarrassed. Even the women were running, but he lagged behind. However, he knew he couldn’t ask to be let down; that would only slow down everyone’s progress.
What could he do?
After thinking for a long time, Er Dai finally came up with a solution. He took a deep breath and tried to make himself lighter by lifting his entire body, reducing the burden on the person pulling him.
“Hey, Er Dai, what are you doing?” Ming Shan, who was responsible for guarding the surroundings, shifted his footsteps and happened to see this scene, smiling as he asked.
Er Dai, struggling to hold his breath, hesitated whether to answer him.
Hearing the commotion behind, Le Shui, who was pulling the cart, turned his head and glanced back lightly.
Er Dai, still hesitating, turned red when he met Le Shui’s gaze. He was really afraid of serious people, but unlike the fear he felt towards the King, he felt even more nervous and uncomfortable around the person pulling the cart. He was afraid he had done something wrong. Well, he wasn’t afraid in front of the King because he didn’t dare do anything wrong…
Er Dai fidgeted with his clothes, feeling uneasy. “I-I want to make it easier for the guy in front…”
“Haha, what’s this?” Ming Shan was incredulous at first, then burst into laughter. After laughing, he teasingly asked Er Dai, “Then why don’t you help Le Shui carry his animal skin bag? If he carries less, wouldn’t it be easier?”
Er Dai was confused for a moment. Although he felt that something was not right, it made sense. If he helped the person in front carry things, wouldn’t it save him some effort?
“Then I—”
“No need.” Le Shui didn’t even turn his head, coldly rejecting Er Dai’s offer.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, why not?” Ming Shan continued to encourage Er Dai. This black kid was really interesting; he could live on this joke for the next few thousand years.
After coaxing for a while, Er Dai still hadn’t agreed, unable to utter a complete sentence.
After a while, Ming Shan realized what was going on and felt a bit frustrated. “Hey, why are you listening to him like that?”
This kid, he wanted to help, but as soon as Le Shui said something, he threw all principles out the window and obediently followed it as if it were an order. But when it came to his words, the kid acted like they were just hot air!
Er Dai bit his lip, unable to answer, as Ming Shan hurried off when calls came from the front.
Lu Yu didn’t notice the small incident behind them. He was walking casually beside Tai Lie, chatting with him.
Lu Yu had already felt the effects of the strength potion wearing off, probably lasting for about four or five hours. Strangely, he felt like his stamina had improved even more than before. Lu Yu dared to say that now he shouldn’t have a problem dealing with three or four ordinary primitive people.
“King, Witch, what’s up?” Ming Shan ran up to the two.
“Do you smell anything?” Lu Yu asked.
Ming Shan tilted his head slightly and sniffed, then seriously replied, “There should be a herd of giant-tailed bulls in the distance to our left. Other than that, there aren’t any dangerous wild beasts.”
“I see.” Lu Yu frowned.
Ming Shan hesitated for a moment. “Witch, is something wrong?”
Lu Yu shook his head and smiled. “Nothing. Maybe I was mistaken.”
He had vaguely felt a strong force to the right front just now. He asked Tai Lie, who didn’t notice anything, and thought it might be the residual effect of the strength potion. But when he asked Ming Shan, he didn’t feel anything either. Maybe he was overthinking it; the strength potion couldn’t be strong enough to exceed the capabilities of the naturally talented Matais.
Even so, Lu Yu still had Ming Shan move to the front of the team to be more vigilant.
Fortunately, no powerful wild beasts appeared. What’s more, due to the fast pace of Lu Yu and the others, they caught up with Xia Cao and Xia Hua’s group after just half a day.
Seeing Witch return safely, Xia Hua was so moved she almost cried, and Xia Cao, who was always steady, had slightly reddened eyes.
Lu Yu didn’t know how to express his feelings, so he could only prepare an extremely sumptuous dinner when they stopped to rest in the evening, even giving a small piece of meat to the people from the Blackwater tribe who were traveling with them.
Mao Pu, with a thick skin, came over to their campfire and shamelessly joined them for a meal.
“Lu Yu, you’re really good at cooking!!” Mao Pu couldn’t bear to put down the piece of meat in his hand, his mouth full of oil as he praised incoherently.
Xia Hua shifted uncomfortably, somewhat disgusted by him. “Don’t spray it everywhere!”
Mao Pu swallowed awkwardly, took a sip of water, and wiped his mouth. “Sorry.”
That being said, Xia Hua didn’t have any ill intentions. Seeing his apology, she didn’t say anything more and even handed him another piece of meat. “Thank you for telling us the information.”
Mao Pu quickly took the meat. “No problem, it’s my duty.”
With that said, he paused and looked at Lu Yu and Tai Lie, who had finished eating and were sitting and talking. He hesitated, “Um, two leaders, I have something to discuss with you.”
Lu Yu turned his head and guessed what he wanted to say from his expression, gesturing for him to continue, “We’re all friends here, go ahead.”
Mao Pu carefully wrapped the meat Xia Hua gave him and put it in his basket, then took something out from inside and touched it, “Two leaders, I understand myself. I might be able to sustain the Blackwater tribe, but to protect a tribe, command battles, I really can’t do it. After this incident, I’ve had a conflict with the Three Tribes, and they probably won’t let us off.”
He lifted his head, solemnly saying, “We won’t go to Beast Plain in the future. You see, could you take me in? Rest assured, I will definitely clean up the tribe, and no one will have any doubts. I’ll fulfill my duties and tasks properly.”
Saying that, he respectfully handed the item in his hand to Tai Lie and Lu Yu, “This is a token. If you agree, please accept it.”
Lu Yu looked down, “This is…”
“This is half of my pinky bone.” Mao Pu raised his left hand to show it off, grinning, “My mother chopped it off when I was young, saying it would help me grow longer.”
Lu Yu, “…I see, well, why don’t you…”
Mao Pu’s face wrinkled, “Are you rejecting me?”
“No! …Sigh.” Lu Yu was helpless, exchanged a glance with Tai Lie, looked around, and asked, “What do you think, Xia Cao?”
Xia Cao smiled gently, “It’s up to you and King.”
Xia Hua nodded in agreement, “Exactly!”
Shan Pu said casually, “I’ll just handle the fights!”
Le Shui nodded slightly.
—
Lu Yu relaxed, finally picked up the bone wrapped in grass rope, and solemnly assured Mao Pu.
“We accept.”
“As long as you don’t betray us, Tai Yu Tribe will never abandon Blackwater.”
Mao Pu’s eyes lit up suddenly.
Shan Pu, Xia Hua, and the others all patted Mao Pu’s shoulder with a smile, “From now on, we’re all on the same side!”
Mao Pu was excited, clenching his fist. “Although I’m not good at fighting, I can catch wild rabbits!”
Lu Yu’s face stiffened. “That won’t do.”
Mao Pu froze, feeling a pang in his heart.
Lu Yu suddenly smiled, “Your value doesn’t lie in catching wild rabbits.”
Such an excellent finance minister shouldn’t be wasted on catching wild rabbits, after all.
