Chapter 68 - Exchange
Seeming worried about Lu Yu, Wu Li reiterated, “Really, don’t go!”
Lu Yu smiled reassuringly, “I won’t. Do I look like someone who would do things others don’t want me to do for no reason? There’s no pressing reason for us to go there. Let’s just go explore other lands.”
Hearing him say that, Wu Li breathed a sigh of relief. Lu Yu had helped him before, and he hadn’t properly thanked him. He had remembered that, so being able to give some warning now made him feel a bit better.
“Well, I won’t keep you. Let’s have a delicious barbecue when you come back tonight!”
Lu Yu replied, “Okay.”
After waving goodbye to Wu Li, Lu Yu and the others found their raft.
Shan Pu and the others had to deliver the exchanged Sakura wood back, so they didn’t join Lu Yu on the raft.
As Shan Pu was about to board the raft, he hesitated, then walked back to Lu Yu, “Lu Yu, you’re not going to the land on the right, are you?”
Lu Yu chuckled, “Wu Li just said so. How could I still go? What are you thinking? Let’s go back quickly, and be careful on the way.”
Lu Yu thought he usually appeared quite steady, so why were one or two people so worried about him this time?
Shan Pu hesitated, “I just… felt like you weren’t in a good mood just now.”
Lu Yu was taken aback.
He indeed hadn’t been in a good mood just now.
Because of Wu Li’s description, he couldn’t help but think of some events in Chinese history, even though he knew they might not be in the same timeline now…
However, Lu Yu wasn’t someone who easily lost his cool, nor did he want to cause trouble for himself and the Matais.
“Just a momentary mood. Anyway, let’s get going.”
“Then, I’ll leave.”
Shan Pu took a few people and the Sakura wood and went back to the wooden hut.
Lu Yu and Tai Lie continued their stroll.
They boarded a small raft and paddled towards the beach of the next land. Since they couldn’t go to the land on the right, they skipped it and went directly to the next one.
The sand on the beach of this land was yellow, not the golden color of Lu Yu’s land, but a dried leaf yellow, more like the sand in the desert.
When they stepped ashore, Lu Yu and the others noticed that this land almost had no mountains or rivers, and even the vegetation was relatively sparse, concentrated in one area. The rest of the land was covered in thick yellow sand…
A Matai guy fanned his grass clothes and said, “It’s so strange, why do I feel a bit hot?”
Lu Yu also felt it, even though they were by the sea, the air felt stifling.
They walked to the exchange area for goods.
The people here also had black hair and yellowish skin, but not the healthy wheat-colored skin like Tai Lie and the others, but a darker shade of yellow.
There were no makeshift sheds set up beside them; they simply laid their goods on the ground.
However, they didn’t display any wild animal meat or similar food items; most of what they had seemed to be tools and other items.
Lu Yu walked over and was surprised to find a ball of cotton thread.
Although the thread was a bit rough and uneven in thickness, and quite loose, it was definitely made from cotton.
Lu Yu hadn’t forgotten his conversation with the old man in the dream training ground, who had mentioned that they could make textile tools but lacked cotton thread for spinning. No matter how well woven, grass could not replace real fabric.
Unexpectedly, here he found cotton thread.
Lu Yu was somewhat excited, but he didn’t show it on his face. After looking at the other things on the stall, he casually picked up the ball of cotton thread and squeezed it, “What’s this?”
His tone was light, as if it were just a casual question.
Since there was only Lu Yu’s group in front of the stall, the stall owner was quite enthusiastic, “This is rope! It can be used to tie things up!”
Lu Yu nodded, “We can use grass to tie things up too, and it’s even more secure than yours.”
He gave the thread a tug.
The stall owner exclaimed, “Ah? Grass?”
Lu Yu tugged at Tai Lie’s arm, and Tai Lie leaned over. Lu Yu reached into the grass basket on his back and pulled out a grass rope.
They had used this grass rope when they went hunting crocodiles before, and Lu Yu had used it to make a lasso, very tough.
Lu Yu handed the grass rope to the stall owner, “You try pulling it, I guarantee you won’t break it!”
“How could grass be so sturdy?” The stall owner took it with some disbelief and pulled hard on both ends.
Each time the grass rope held, his hands turned red from the strain.
The stall owner’s eyes lit up, “Such an amazing grass!”
Originally, there were few plants here, and all the grass and trees were thin and yellowish. Where could such tough grass be found?
“With this, you definitely won’t be interested in my rope.” Reluctantly, the stall owner returned the thin, tough grass to Lu Yu, his eyes glued to it and unable to look away.
Lu Yu smirked, “We have plenty of this kind of grass back home, but I’ve never seen this kind of rope before. It’s quite novel. By the way, what is this rope made of? It looks like it’s made by twisting something.”
“You’re right! It’s twisted.”
The stall owner became even more enthusiastic than before. Hearing Lu Yu’s curiosity about the material for making ropes, he quickly turned around and fetched a handful of snowy white cotton from a leather pouch placed aside.
“It’s made with this! This is called cotton. Actually, besides making ropes, you can also put this under grass bedding to make it softer!”
Lu Yu agreed, “Sleeping on grass bedding is indeed uncomfortable when it’s hard. Your cotton seems quite useful.”
The stall owner eagerly said, “Then exchange it with your grass! With this grass ropw, I can tie up wild animals, bind rafts… my ropes break too easily.”
Lu Yu seemed hesitant, “Exchanging is fine, but with so many of us, how much cotton would we need to put under each grass bedding? It wouldn’t be convenient to carry back…”
“I have a solution!” The stall owner hurriedly returned to his leather pouch, took out a handful of seeds, and showed them to Lu Yu. “These are cotton seeds. As long as you bury them in the ground, they’ll grow lots and lots of cotton!”
Lu Yu remarked, “So it’s indeed seeds.”
The stall owner became anxious, “I’m not lying to you…”
He really wanted that grass rope!!
Lu Yu raised an eyebrow slightly.
…In the end, he exchanged ten strands of fine, tough grass rope for a whole pouch of cotton seeds, and the stall owner even gave him the pouch.
Satisfied, Lu Yu put the pouch into the grass basket behind Tai Lie.
While Tai Lie watched him like a miser guarding his treasure while planting the seeds, he chuckled softly, “You’re quite capable.”
His voice was deep and thick, and as his breath brushed past Lu Yu’s ears, it tickled slightly.
Lu Yu replied softly, “Not really…”
He just wanted to save some resources…
Tai Lie reached out and plucked a piece of white cotton that had fallen on Lu Yu’s head. After tossing away the cotton, his fingers trailed along Lu Yu’s cheek, brushing over his chin, “Like soft grass bedding?”
Lu Yu’s face flushed.
“Cough cough.” Xia Cao cleared his throat, catching the attention of the two, “Guys, I don’t mean to interrupt, but it’s getting late. Shall we make our way back and eat something?”
Seizing the opportunity to jump away from the man who suddenly teased him, Lu Yu distanced himself.
The group checked out a few more stalls, but Lu Yu didn’t find what he was looking for. He actually wanted to collect more plant seeds, but the vegetation here wasn’t abundant, so he didn’t find any. As for other bone or stone tools, the people from the Valley could make them, and even more exquisitely.
After browsing around, Lu Yu and the others were ready to head back.
Lu Yu patted his stomach, “It’s getting late, let’s go back and eat.”
He had brought some dried fruit, but after walking for half a day, he still craved for hot, fragrant rice, stir-fried vegetables, and meat soup.
Oh, right! They also caught some crabs in the previous land! That’s some good stuff.
The raft returned to their original golden beach. On the beach, besides the wooden shelters and the bustling crowd, a space was cleared out, and many bonfires were set up, emitting wisps of blue smoke, with juicy grilled meat skewered on racks.
Lu Yu stopped in his tracks and glanced around.
Xia Cao suggested, “How about we set up a bonfire here too and prepare our food?”
They would definitely return in the afternoon, so having lunch here would save them the time traveling back and forth.
Lu Yu thought for a moment and exchanged glances with Tai Lie, then nodded. “Alright, let’s find a spot here to set up a bonfire.”
Shan Pu and the others would bring the wood over, and the Matai people from the Beast Plain city would also return for the barbecue, so there was no need to worry.
Xia Cao and the others quickly set up two bonfires. Since they only had a large basket of crabs, it wouldn’t be enough for the Matai people, so they went to exchange for some meat.
Lu Yu reached into his backpack and pretended to rummage through it, but he actually took out his kitchen utensils and some wild vegetables from his ring. In fact, there was fresh meat in his ring too, but it would be too strange to take out so much at once.
Lu Yu chopped the dried meat into chunks and tossed them into a stone pot, adding some ginger and a handful of wild vegetables and bamboo shoots before covering it with a wooden board.
After preparing the soup, he went to brush the crabs. There was a small river nearby connected to the sea, with clear water that they could use.
Lu Yu skillfully grabbed a large crab waving its claws and brushed its abdomen and claws with a spiked plant ball. Once cleaned, he tied up the crabs with a kind of rope made from another plant, which he called “deodorizing grass.” As the name suggested, this grass could remove the fishy smell and even had a hint of fragrance, making it perfect for tying crabs.
Lu Yu put the cleaned crabs into the stone pot.
“You’re not really going to eat that stuff, are you?!” a surprised and disdainful voice sounded.
Lu Yu’s hand paused for a moment before continuing to stack the crabs.
“Hey! I’m talking to you!”
A shadow cast over Lu Yu’s head. He remained indifferent.
“Are you deaf?!” The voice grew impatient, reaching out to grab Lu Yu, but halfway through, it was firmly caught by another big hand, and the person yelped in pain, “Ah!”
Tai Lie’s voice was as cold as ice, “What are you trying to do?”
The voice sounded urgent and angry, “Let go of me! Want to die?!”
Lu Yu finished arranging the crabs, covered the pot, clapped his legs, stood up, and looked at the person in front of him.
Suddenly, he froze.
This person…
