Chapter 1 - Matai
The weather was fine, with cloudless sky, and an endless grassland. Lu Yu quietly hid behind a large rock.
He wore a grass ring on his head and a selfmade grass coat tightly wrapped around his body.
This outfit made him sweat profusely even though the weather wasn’t hot. He endured this discomfort just to observe and avoid an incoming large group of beast.
The air trembled slightly, and Lu Yu perked up his ears.
Before long, a rumbling sound approached from afar.
The grasses and sands rose off the ground, accompanied by the intermittent low roars, as a group of gray-brown mammoths, with two sharp tusks and thick fur, leisurely passed by.
Lu Yu silently recited a sentence in his heart.
[Open panel]
As soon as he uttered these words, a light blue transparent electronic screen appeared in front of his eyes, visible only to him.
Lu Yu stared at the largest and strongest mammoth in the distance, and the panel’s light circle keenly captured the target, displaying a series of information.
[Mammoth (Leader): Land Melee]
[Threat Level: B]
[Drop Rate: Grade C Storage Ring]
The dropped item was actually a storage ring!
Lu Yu swallowed his saliva, eagerly examining the words “storage ring” again and again.
With a storage ring, regardless of its size, it was a treasure. With this, he wouldn’t have to laboriously weave baskets or carry things on his back.
However, no matter how good the items were, he could only watch and couldn’t use them with his ordinary human physique.
Thinking of this, Lu Yu couldn’t help but feel resentful.
He had been transported to a primitive society, not knowing if he was still on Earth, and the cheat he received was actually a game panel.
It’s not that the game panel was bad; on the contrary, it was incredibly powerful. It could turn real animals into monsters in the game, and killing them would drop various magical items.
But the problem was—
He was just an ordinary human. The animals here were all real. He couldn’t defeat the large ones, nor could he catch up with the small ones. With his physical qualities, how could he dominate the primitive world?
Lu Yu ground his teeth in frustration. Since he was given a cheat, why not just enhance his physical abilities, damn it!
—
Lu Yu, a Chinese, twenty-four years old this year, was a chef specializing in palace cuisine. Before being suddenly brought to this strange place, he was serving as a judge for a culinary competition.
During the competition, he tasted a piece of extremely strange-tasting beef and was about to educate the timid little chef when he suddenly fainted.
When he woke up, he began his wilderness survival journey.
Lu Yu was a person who believed in accepting what had come his way. Until he figured out how to return, he would temporarily suppress feelings of despair and fear, which would make people weak and vulnerable, and strive to survive.
But reality was reality. He was a giant in thought but unfortunately a dwarf in this situation.
On the twelfth day after crossing over, he felt like he couldn’t go on anymore.
Food was not a problem. As a chef, in the lush jungle, he could always find something edible.
However, safety was completely unguaranteed, with too many dangerous creatures around. He had to carefully consider where to sleep, either in narrow caves or high trees, constantly afraid that his tender white flesh would become someone’s dessert.
Fortunately, he hadn’t encountered any fierce beasts face-to-face yet. Occasionally, he would catch some smaller animals, such as wild rabbits, slug, and fishes, etc.
These small animals, after being searched by the game panel, would drop items such as [Small Healing Pill] and [Antidote]. These two things could forcibly prolong his life.
But luck could run out. Recently, because of the changes in the season, more and more wild beasts were passing through here, and he needed to find some security for himself.
Today, coming to spy on the mammoth parade was the opportunity he had been waiting for.
In this land, not far away, lived a group of lions.
Whether these mammoths, who came from afar, wanted to pass through this area or settle here, they would inevitably encounter the lion family.
As the saying goes, when two tigers meet, one must be injured. And as long as the beasts were searched by the game panel, no matter how they died, they would leave behind treasure chests that only he could see.
Lu Yu’s plan was to be a fisherman after the clam and crane fought.
The lion leader he had stealthily searched using the game panel can dropped a [Grade C Battle Axe].
With this axe, he would have some self-defense ability.
After observing for a while, as he expected, the distant mammoth army encountered the indigenous lion family.
The mammoths were huge, with ivory tusks over a meter long, sharp and curved, capable of easily poking holes in prey and lifting them up. They had formidable combat capabilities. However, this mammoth family had fewer tusks, only five, while their opponents, the lion family, had a full twenty adult lions.
Although lions were not as large as mammoths, they were agile and divided their labor reasonably, with some attracting attention, some biting, and some harassing.
This battle lasted for a full two hours.
Lu Yu was hiding behind the rocks, was almost bitten to death by mosquitoes but he didn’t dared to move, fearing that he would be noticed by some sharp-eyed lion and instead of watching the tribal war, he would become a snack for them instead.
As the sun was about to set, the battle ended with the mammoths abandoning a member of their own and fleeing.
The mammoth’s body was large, and the lions happily feasted on it.
Lu Yu’s eyes gleamed as he looked at the sparkling treasure chest beside the mammoth.
The one that died wasn’t the mammoth leader, but according to the rule he knew, it would generally drop the same item but one level lower.
In other words, inside that chest, there was likely a Grade D or Grade E Storage Ring.
Even if the original plan of the lions didn’t pan out and he couldn’t pick up the axe, Lu Yu remained optimistic.
As long as there was a harvest, he was content. Don’t ask for too much.
Now, he just hoped that these lions would quickly finish their dinner and go to sleep, or the chest would disappear in an hour.
Excited yet anxious, Lu Yu waited.
He silently prayed to all the deities he could think of—Jade Emperor, Buddha, God, Jesus—hoping that someone would hear his sincere prayers.
Perhaps some deity did hear his prayers because shortly after the lions started eating, they suddenly, as if receiving a signal, collectively ran off.
Leaving behind a solitary mammoth corpse on the grassland, Lu Yu frowned, feeling more worried than pleased.
Normally, lions wouldn’t leave until they were full. There were no other wild animals in this area to threaten them. Even if they encountered powerful mammoths, the lions would choose to fight rather than retreat.
Why did they leave so much meat uneaten and hastily run away?
Could it be some unknown large beast?
If the lions ran away, should he also run?
But what about the enticing chest lying on the ground like a naked beauty…
Just as Lu Yu hesitated, a group of bipedal creatures suddenly emerged from a nearby jungle.
There were about thirty or forty of them, wearing animal skins around their waists, wielding wooden stick, exuding a powerful aura. Each one was about two meters tall, with unkempt hair reaching their shoulders, bronze-colored skin, muscular and robust figures.
Lu Yu’s eyes widened in shock.
These were… wild men? Or primitive humans?
At this moment, Lu Yu’s game panel was still on. As he stared at these people, the panel’s light circle followed his gaze and locked onto one of them.
A string of information appeared on the panel.
[Matai Warrior]
Matai?
Lu Yu stared at these words, suddenly enlightened.
It’s them!
Although Lu Yu didn’t know much about primitive society, he did know a bit about this tribe.
Once, while searching for recipes in his grandfather’s study, he accidentally came across a book called “Chronicles of Ancient History” and casually read a few pages.
He remembered that the “Chronicles of Ancient History” recorded a few sentences: “The Matai tribe, tall and sturdy, six feet tall, brave and adept in battle, unbeatable by ferocious beasts.”
If he had this physical qualities plus the cheat. Wasn’t it a breeze for him to dominate the primitive world?
The reason why Lu Yu remembered this so clearly was not only because of this. Later on, the book recorded a fantastic event.
The “Chronicles of Ancient History” stated that the Matai people had extremely long lifespans, living for thousands of years. But strangely, they not only did not multiply into a large population but were extinct even before the Shang and Zhou Dynasties.
Now, he actually saw this miraculous tribe with his own eyes. If it weren’t for the prompt from the game panel, he would have thought they were some kind of wild people.
So, he really was still on the same Earth, not transported to another place, right?
Now what should he do? This wasn’t the right time for a cultural exchange between ancient and modern times. He was afraid that as soon as he appeared, the fierce Matai people would mercilessly kill him.
Forget it, this chest was destined not to be his. He shouldn’t risk his life.
After careful consideration, Lu Yu decided to retreat immediately. He didn’t mind waiting for the Matai people to leave before leaving himself, but he couldn’t bear the uncomfortable position he had been in for so long. Besides, he felt that even though the Matai people were human, they wouldn’t be as sensitive as beasts from such a distance.
He turned off the panel, made a slight movement, propped himself up with his hands on the ground, changed from lying down to squatting, picked up the small backpack beside him, carefully turned around, bent his legs, bent his waist, and moved slowly toward the jungle.
One meter, two meters, three meters…
Just as he was about to enter the jungle after another ten steps, strange sounds suddenly came from behind, as if a leopard was sprinting across the grass.
Upon careful listening, the sound came from the rear…
Lu Yu’s heart skipped a beat, subconsciously wanting to escape.
Before he could straighten up, accompanied by a gust of wind brushing past his ear, a black shadow quickly flashed by.
Thud—
Two bare and dirty big feet landed in front of him.
Seeing these unexpected feet, Lu Yu’s back suddenly broke out in a cold sweat.
Could things get any worse…
He dryly swallowed his saliva, and his gaze moved tremblingly upward along the sturdy legs blocking his view.
Animal skin skirt, muscular thighs, solid chest muscles… Thick eyebrows, big eyes, high nose, wide forehead, a face as upright as if it were grown under a red flag.
—
This Matai person’s appearance actually fits modern aesthetic standards quite well, completely unlike those primitive people who look like monkeys.
Lu Yu relaxed somewhat strangely.
He stood up, brushed off the mud on his grass skirt, looked up, and smiled brightly at the wild man in front of him.
Since running away was no longer an option, he might as well show goodwill. Language might not be understood, but a smile was always a universally recognized gesture of goodwill, right?
Perhaps, along with a few gestures?
As Lu Yu was hesitating, the Matai man in front of him looked him up and down, then suddenly asked in a clear voice, “Who are you?”
“I…” Lu Yu was about to instinctively answer when he suddenly realized, looking baffled.
Wait a minute.
How could this big brother speak?
