Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Hunting (part 2)
Kael gives a sharp nod, and they spring into action. Naida darts to the left, her sleek, fish-like body cutting through the water with graceful speed. Taryn takes the right, moving with similar agility, while Gorran and Kael descend beneath the creature, swimming swiftly to attack from below.
As they close in, Kael feels a rush of adrenaline. They've done this before, hunted creatures this size, but this one is different. There's a sense of power in its movements, the way it glides through the water with effortless control. Still, Kael knows they can take it.
With a sudden burst of speed, Naida strikes first, her spear aimed at the creature's gills. It hits, but instead of sinking deep, the tip barely penetrates its thick, armored skin. The creature lets out a low, guttural growl and whips around, faster than Kael expected. Naida is forced to pull back quickly, narrowly avoiding the beast's snapping jaws.
Taryn moves in from the side, his spear aimed at its exposed flank, but he faces the same resistance. His strike hits home, but the creature's hide is tougher than they anticipated, and the blow barely leaves a mark. Blood begins to swirl in the water from the superficial wounds, but it's clear this is going to be a harder fight than expected.
"It's thicker than we thought!" Taryn shouts through the water, his voice carrying the strain of exertion. "We're not cutting deep enough!"
Kael curses under his breath as he and Gorran move in from below. The creature thrashes violently, sensing the hunters all around it. Its tail lashes out, nearly catching Taryn and sending a shockwave through the water that pushes them back. Kael grits his teeth and signals for them to keep pressing the attack.
The fight becomes a blur of movement. Kael and his team dart around the creature with great speed, their bodies giving them an advantage in the water. They attack from all sides, trying to find weak points in the creature's thick hide. Every strike is met with resistance, the spears glancing off or barely penetrating. It's a battle of attrition now, a test of endurance as they wear the creature down bit by bit.
Kael dives low, then propels himself upward with a powerful kick, aiming for the underside of the creature. His spear hits, but the tip barely sinks in before the creature jerks violently, sending a shock through Kael's arms. It's stronger than he thought, and it's starting to get desperate.
The creature twists and thrashes, its massive body creating turbulence in the water. Kael is forced to retreat, his heart racing as he watches the beast swing its powerful tail again, trying to catch one of them off guard. Gorran manages a strike at the gills, but the creature twists away at the last second, the spear glancing off its side.
"This thing not going down easy!" Gorran growls, frustration clear in his voice. "We've got to hit it harder!"
"Keep moving!" Kael shouts back. "It's tiring. We need to keep it off balance!"
They continue their relentless assault, darting in and out of the creature's reach, their bodies a blur in the water. Naida and Taryn work together, coordinating their strikes to keep the creature distracted, while Gorran and Kael look for any opening to land a decisive blow. The water is thick with blood now, both from the creature and the small cuts and scrapes covering the hunters.
Kael feels his muscles burning, the strain of the fight starting to weigh on him, but he can see the creature slowing. Its movements are less coordinated, more erratic, as exhaustion begins to set in. This is their chance.
With a fierce determination, Kael signals to the others. "Go for the gills again! Hit it hard!"
Naida moves first, her spear aimed with deadly precision. This time, when she strikes, the spear sinks deeper, hitting one of the soft, vulnerable spots just behind the gills. The creature lets out a deafening screech, its body convulsing in pain. Blood pours from the wound, clouding the water in a crimson haze.
As Kael watches the blood pour from the wounded creature, something shifts in the corner of his vision—a shadow, large and moving fast. His heart skips a beat. It's not as massive as the behemoth they had seen earlier, but it's still twice the size of the one they're currently fighting. And it's coming right for them.
His stomach tightens with alarm, but the others are too focused on the current fight to notice. Kael's mind races as the massive silhouette approaches, cutting through the water with terrifying speed. The new creature's form becomes clearer as it closes in—muscular, sleek, and built for destruction.
"Run!" Kael bellows, his voice cutting through the chaos.
The team freezes for a second, their eyes wide with confusion. But before they can fully comprehend the danger, the new creature is almost upon them. In an instant, Kael propels himself upward, positioning himself between the charging beast and his team.
With a powerful kick of his tail, he surges toward it, spear raised, hoping to divert its charge. The two creatures collide with bone-crushing force. The impact is like being hit by a tidal wave, the shock rattling Kael's bones as the sheer power of the beast sends him flying backward through the water. He's hurled toward the coral ridge, crashing into it hard enough to send clouds of debris swirling into the blood-filled water.
Kael's vision blurs as he slams into the coral, pain flooding his senses. The cold water feels thicker now, as though it's pulling him down. He struggles to keep his eyes open, to fight against the darkness closing in, but his body betrays him. The world around him slows, his limbs heavy, and his head spins.
Just before everything fades, he sees the others—Naida, Taryn, Gorran—still fighting, their bodies darting through the water, trying desperately to fend off the new creature. But it's too fast, too powerful. It slashes through the water like a force of nature, and Kael can only watch in horror as it lunges at them.
Then, nothing.
