Chapter 66: A Revolutionary Performance
“The only good goblin is one that stays out of sight!”
…
“For them, I am no different from the goblins.”
…
“An army of demons is approaching, threatening the world’s fate. Do you even comprehend the gravity of it?”
“Understanding isn’t the problem.”
“Then why…?”
“Because before the world ends, goblins will destroy the village first.”
…
“What do you think people do when they finally gain power? Even if they achieve something, it’s an illusion, and it won’t be long before it fades away. Still, the choice is yours to make. When you decide to forge ahead, that’s your victory.”
…
“Goblin Lord? You’re just a dirty goblin… and I am the Goblin Slayer!”
…
For a full hour and a half, not a single person left the theater. Most even forgot to blink as they were engrossed in the film.
By the end, when they watched Goblin Slayer, battered and weary, defeat the Goblin Lord in an ungraceful but resolute manner, the audience, primarily adventurers, remained seated in silent contemplation.
Some adventurers, who had long considered themselves failures, felt a sense of redemption.
The ideology of Goblin Slayer acknowledged them—the ordinary people helping those in need between towns—as equally valuable.
Young adventurers, who had once harbored grand but unrealistic ambitions, adjusted their focus.
They now aimed to help villages threatened by goblins, realizing that even slaying a single goblin was a noble cause.
Meanwhile, non-adventurer viewers felt grateful for their peaceful lives.
They began to appreciate adventurers, who silently protected this peace, in ways they’d never considered while watching lighter films like Blessings for a Wonderful World.
Only after experiencing Goblin Slayer did they truly understand humanity’s deepest kindness.
Among those profoundly impacted was Sam. Initially dragged to the theater by Joseph, Sam had undergone a complete transformation by the end of the movie. Now, he loudly proclaimed his love for films, having tossed aside his prejudices. He was thrilled to witness what he now saw as a groundbreaking performance, entirely different from stage plays.
He even momentarily forgot that the movie’s heroine bore a striking resemblance to Daphne, the daughter of the Grand Duke of the South, whom he had once encountered.
“My God, Goblin Slayer is amazing! Joseph, let’s get some armor made and go slay monsters too!”
As usual, Joseph, now deeply moved by the film’s portrayal of a different side of adventuring, simply replied, “You’re free to get yourself killed, but leave me out of it. Didn’t you see what happened to those rookie adventurers? We need to train with experienced adventurers first to improve ourselves.”
“Hmm… you’re right. Alright, that’s the plan then! Haha! One day, we’ll become strong adventurers. Not just goblins—any monster that crosses our path will fall before us!”
Joseph, smiling at Sam’s carefree attitude, felt a brief moment of doubt about whether he was cut out to be an adventurer. But then he patted his partner on the shoulder and shouted, “Of course, that’s a given! Now let’s head to the training hall and work hard! This time, I’m going to make it to the second tier!”
“Oh! That’s my partner for you!”
Like Joseph and Sam, many novice adventurers left Goblin Slayer with a deeper understanding of the adventuring world.
Quietly, this film would bring about small but significant changes across the land, unnoticed at first.
…
The Imperial Mage Tower, Grand Lecture Hall
“—former Imperial Mage, now independent mage, Edward Durin, will have his status as an imperial mage reinstated. Moreover, he will assume the position of Head of the newly established Alchemy Branch at the Imperial Mage Academy!”
The room erupted into shocked whispers. The entire auditorium was filled with disbelief, and half the shocked gazes were directed at the speaker, Hohenheim, while the other half turned toward Edward, who was still processing what had just been said.
“Master Hohenheim, the Alchemy Tower has been a subordinate institution of the Mage Tower for centuries. That order was established when the tower was founded hundreds of years ago, and it has never changed. Alchemy has never produced any significant results, which is why it hasn’t been classified as a new school. Now you not only want to make the Alchemy Tower independent but also appoint Edward as the Head of this new school? What’s going on?”
Most people in the room were familiar with Edward’s infamous reputation. Many had witnessed his so-called “Alchemical Revolution” and knew well why Hohenheim had once expelled him from the Mage Tower.
But now? Not only was Edward’s alchemy being elevated to the same level as magic, but he was also being reinstated as the head of a new school? Were they dreaming?
Anticipating these doubts, Hohenheim calmly replied, “I understand your confusion. I also know many of you disdain the study of alchemy and harbor resentment toward Edward. But this is the Mage Tower—the forefront of magical knowledge. Here, we set aside personal grievances and prejudices, and we judge things solely by their potential to advance magical studies.”
With that, Hohenheim pulled out a softly glowing crystal from his pocket and continued, “This is an Imaging Crystal, invented by Edward. Apart from its activation requiring some magic, the rest is the result of alchemical processes. Its capabilities—”
As Hohenheim infused the crystal with magic, an image was projected onto the massive wall at the front of the auditorium. The image was unmistakably a scene from Blessings for a Wonderful World.
“Is this… a real projection?”
Several mages who specialized in mirror magic recognized the concept, and Hohenheim nodded. “Indeed. This crystal can project recorded images in this manner. Of course, it’s better for Edward to explain it. Mage Edward, would you please come forward and describe the principles and functions of this Imaging Crystal?”
Edward, who knew he had no choice, sighed and stood.
Under the intense gaze of the assembled mages, he made his way to the stage.
“Uh, before I explain, I think it’d be better if everyone watched the entire film first. Dean, may I?”
Despite Edward’s suggestion to make the audience sit through an hour-and-a-half movie, Hohenheim simply shrugged as if to say, “Do as you wish.”
Thus, Edward darkened the entire auditorium by covering the windows, and with the environment now sealed, he activated the crystal.
That day would forever be remembered in the magical world. For the first time, the Empire’s top mages watched a full-length movie in the Grand Lecture Hall of the Mage Tower—a place that symbolized the highest honor in magical studies.
More than once during the screening, bursts of laughter erupted from the auditorium, startling the students patrolling outside.
