Chapter 2
The sweetness of capitalism
7 am.
I rode my bike out early in the morning when the chilly air wasn’t gone.
Going to work at a company in Gangnam was done through a bicycle-only road along the Han River.
It was to save on bus fare and take care of health.
“Even when the cold wind blows, you don’t know it’s cold.”
Even though I was dressed warmly, I could hum on my own as I rode my bike.
For the past two days, I only looked at the monitor to the point where my eyes were bloodshot.
A valuation of over 20 billion.
Tens of millions of won come and go in a minute or two, and it is not easy to get out of that magic.
I was happy when 10 million won went up, but on the other hand, when 10 million won fell, I was so distressed that I would tear my hair out.
‘Sell or not. What should I do?’
Even while I put water in the pot, turned on the stove, and cooked ramen, I had countless thoughts.
It has assets of over 20 billion.
If you sell it right away, you won’t have to worry about money for the rest of your life… … Is it right to sell when the market price continues to rise?
‘You’ve lived your whole life tied to money. Even if the money is reduced, it’s already a huge amount. Let’s not rush.’
I ate ramen and went to bed early at night.
Although I woke up several times in the middle to check the balance and market price.
In the end, yesterday, too, it rose over 800 million.
A large sum that is difficult to earn in a working life.
‘Did you say that the price of your senior’s apartment went up by 300 million won?’
If you boasted about 300 million won to the extent that everyone in the company knew about it, how would everyone react if you earned over 20 billion won?
I was curious, but I wasn’t stupid enough to brag about it.
‘Let’s not tell anyone.’
I think I have enough balance to not have to worry about my old age, so I can afford it.
The road to work on the bike path in the early morning feels short.
The cold wind was somehow clear and refreshing.
It feels like my shoulders and back, which have been bent until now, straighten out on their own.
I arrived at work early and drank warm water from the water purifier.
Warm water is the best for clearing the stomach after exercise.
In the meantime, I was careful not to catch a cold, but my heart felt much lighter.
“welcome.”
“You went to work early today.”
As 9:00 approached, my co-workers went to work in pairs of three or four.
Employees holding takeaway coffee in their hands.
Because it is a pharmaceutical company, the work atmosphere was liberal.
It’s easy to work, except for the fact that at the end of the month or quarterly, I put a scorecard or something on the wall where I record my work evaluations and performance.
“What happened to Myung Eye Clinic in Busan?”
“I decided to go into the machine and demo it next week.”
“okay?”
The company sold artificial tears used by ordinary consumers and lenses used by opticians.
The main business of the salespeople, including myself, was various surgical-related medical devices supplied to ophthalmic operating rooms.
Lasik, Lasek.
Recently, it sold the Smile LASIK machine, which reduces the amount of cuts on the cornea and is much less painful.
Selling the machine was not the end, and cartridges that had to be replaced every time were periodically supplied to ophthalmologists at a high price.
“Recently, the Busan team has been performing poorly. Claims come in from time to time.”
“I think it’s because three stupid new recruits were assigned this year.”
“When you pick, you pick well. Or teach well during the probationary period. At headquarters, who decided to go and get it during the demo period?”
“I was assistant manager Ahn Chang-jin, but suddenly I have work at home, so I don’t think I will be able to go.”
“okay? I guess I’ll have to send someone on a business trip to Myeong Eye Clinic instead.”
Conference room for the medical devices team.
There was silence for a moment at the manager’s words.
Itinerary for 3 nights and 4 days.
The ophthalmology clinic wanted to test the device by actually using it on patients in the form of a demo before purchasing the expensive surgical machine.
It is a job that requires going to an unfamiliar eye clinic in Busan, installing equipment with the technical team, and providing miscellaneous help.
It would be worth trying if it was caught by performance, but since I can’t work in Seoul, my performance will rather decrease.
“Is there anyone going to Busan this time?”
When Manager Oh asked the staff, he stayed still as usual.
The car I bought for a short time was sold after a divorce, and when I went on a business trip to the provinces, I had to hang out at dinner with co-workers.
So I just hoped that I wouldn’t get caught like usual.
I suddenly had a thought.
‘Wouldn’t it be nice to go to Busan?’
It’s a narrow, dingy semi-basement room, but it was a cozy nest for him who got used to it.
It’s been like that for the past two days, but when I get home from work, I feel like I’ll be looking at the monitor non-stop.
Even now, I am anxious to check the price of the coin.
‘Honestly, I can’t come to my senses. I don’t know how to live in the future. I think you’d better cool down in Busan and come back.’
I raised my hand while thinking.
“I will go to Busan.”
“okay? I can trust Assistant Manager Kim. One more has to go.”
At Director Oh’s words, this time Jo Soo-ah, who had been quietly watching the meeting, raised her hand.
“I will go with you.”
She was a source of beauty recognized by the company.
Excellent job grades, fluent English, a body built up through dance and Pilates, and a pretty face like a doll.
It was popular enough to take away the souls of doctors while conducting business mainly at university hospitals and general hospitals.
“Are you Sua?”
The manager’s reaction was different from mine.
When I applied, the normally quiet guy was unexpected, but Jo Soo-ah performed well and, above all, was popular within the company.
After two years at the company, it was hard to find male employees who hated her.
“Boss. I will go too.”
“I have been to Myeong Eye Clinic several times while managing the Gyeongnam area. I will go to Busan.”
“Shouldn’t I, as the team leader, go along with my rank?”
As soon as Jo Soo-ah applied, male employees lined up.
“You have to do it in order of application. Because two people are enough. Busan, let Assistant Manager Kim and Soo-ah Jo go.”
Director Oh firmly shook his head.
In his position, there must be a belief that if he sends me and Jo Soo-ah, he will just work hard and come back without any troublesome incidents.
* * *
After leaving the conference room, the staff scattered to work.
“Ugh. I wanted to go to Busan.”
“I should have supported you earlier.”
There was a complaint close to regret from the male staff, but they were simply ignored.
Jo Soo-ah went to the tea room and had a cup of joblay tea.
It seemed to take into account my taste, which I don’t usually drink coffee, and in reality I didn’t drink coffee because it was too expensive.
“senior. Would you like to have a cup of tea with me?”
“yes. What… … .”
She even brought joblay tea in a mug, but could she refuse it?
I was just trying to focus on my company work in order not to think about coins.
“Shall we go to the roof? Or a break room?”
“A rooftop.”
I took the elevator and went up to the rooftop with Jo Soo-ah, who had a cup of hot coffee.
There were usually several employees, but today I didn’t see many people.
Jo Soo-ah drank some coffee from the mug and said.
“senior. Actually, Busan is my hometown. My parents are also living now.”
“ah. I see.”
I wondered why she said she was going to Busan with me, but this reasonable reason.
I even thought about the situation where she left most of the work to herself and went to her parents’ house.
‘Not bad. It’s like working or working hard when your mind is complicated.’
The changed situation is funny, but until recently, work at the company was the most important.
I was full of thoughts that somehow I had to work at the company, build up performance, get a promotion, and raise my salary.
Do you want to have a property that your parents will pass on to you, or a house where you can live comfortably?
Living alone in a harsh world shouldn’t hurt, and I had to stay alert at any moment.
A life lived with responsibility and pressure.
It’s a coin, but after the balance has grown, I’ve been able to afford a company life.
“Senior, have you been to Busan?”
“no. This is the first time.”
I had never been to most ordinary big cities in Korea except for business trips.
Until I turned 20, after that, I couldn’t travel domestically while attending college.
I heard a few times that I was in trouble, not just from my seniors, but from my classmates as well.
Who doesn’t know what travel is good for?
When my friends went to private academies, I thought that traveling was a luxury for people who had to starve for days because they really ran out of rice at home.
“There are many restaurants I know in Busan, right?”
“yes?”
“After work, go on a food tour with me.”
I looked at Joshua’s face.
He is full of confidence, the clothes he wears are classy, and his skin and eyes are pure and clear.
It’s not for nothing that I like high-ranking executives and new employees.
I don’t know if I need to ask myself to go out to eat together, but since we went on a business trip together, I thought it was a necessary task for a smooth social life.
‘What kind of person is Jo Soo-ah looking at?’
There were no false expectations.
Divorce, salty, workaholic, outsider, timid.
Will these words come out of nowhere?
“Well, when the time comes.”
You have a lot of wealth, so you can enjoy it to your heart’s content.
Of course, I was thinking of using a corporate card.
* * *
“thank you for your effort.”
“Chief Kim, are you going in?”
“yes. I am busy at home.”
“Okay then.”
Unlike usual, when I stayed at the company until late, I left work at the same time.
‘How much was the coin worth?’
Out of curiosity, the bike pedaling sped up by itself.
I feel less tired than usual and feel like I have twice as much energy.
You can find out if you do a simple search in the company, but once you start looking at it, it seems like you can’t get out of it. That is why the Maginot Line is the house.
‘How much is it? why.’
I didn’t know how hard it was, and I headed home, bypassing even the cycling club members who rode in jackets.
The joy of overtaking high-performance bicycles costing more than 10 million won with entry-level bicycles costing 230,000 won.
On flat ground, the bike’s performance doesn’t make much of a difference, and the opponent may not have been running hard enough.
Whatever the reason, I managed to get home safely.
The suit was drenched in sweat in the chilly fall weather.
Without even time to change clothes, I turn on my computer and access the coin trading site.
Checking my current balance… … .
“Oh My God.”
I barely held back the screams that came out.
In the morning it was $23.55 million.
However, during the time I was at the company, a whopping $2 million went up.
In terms of Korean money, it is about 2.2 billion won.
Could this be the sweetness of capitalism?
‘This is the fun of increasing wealth.’
It was the most thrilling sensation I’ve ever felt in my entire life.
