Chapter 86: Trouble Knocks at the Door
"You're up next. Are you ready?" one of the fight organizers asked Robby, whose number was written on his shorts.
Robby nodded, though he wasn't ready at all.
He recalled Joey's open declaration to humiliate Cobra Kai in a fair fight. Joey had wanted to announce this publicly but hadn't found the right opportunity. Now, he figured this was the perfect stage, so he sent out the location.
Truth be told, Robby also wanted to see Cobra Kai fall. His father taught there, and apparently, it was thriving.
As someone who despised his father, Robby thought that ruining the reputation of his martial arts school would help alleviate some of the pent-up hatred in his heart.
At least, that would bring Robby more satisfaction than anything else.
But as he stood in this place, his perspective shifted. He discovered that many of those now fighting had once been victims of bullies in their own schools.
Through Cobra Kai, they had found a way to better themselves, improve day by day, and stop being easy targets for others to exploit for fun.
"Kid, your turn."
"I won't fight." Robby was ready to leave.
"Your opponent isn't that tough. Don't be afraid."
Shaking his head, Robby replied, "It's not that—I just don't want to fight."
Despite his change of heart, the crowd had already anticipated the fight. Before he could leave, Robby was pushed into the cage.
"We've got the next fighters: Robby, number 38, versus Hawk!"
Hawk stared at his opponent and murmured, "This is for you, brother."
Then, something unexpected happened that even stopped the music.
"The Cobras stink like crap!"
"Out of the way."
Max, who was chatting with his friends about the upcoming matches, noticed the commotion in the distance and asked, "What's going on?"
"I don't know, but you should check it out."
It wasn't necessary to stand up because, in no time, a group of over ten teens arrived, all dressed in white. They looked like the typical bullies you'd find in any school.
But this wasn't just any place—there were more fighters here than spectators. They had chosen the wrong venue to cause trouble.
When Ryan stood up, others followed suit. Everyone seemed to understand the intruders' intentions and prepared for a fight.
Ryan approached the group and, with a mocking smile, recognized a familiar face. "Joey Quinn, let me make it clear: we don't have any issues with each other. So why the heck are you causing this diva-level drama in my house?"
"Step aside, Ryan. I've got no beef with you. My problem is with Cobra Kai forcing people to fight against their will." Joey pointed at Robby, who was standing amidst the white-clad teens.
It seemed they all shared the same sentiment and were targeting Cobra Kai.
Max joined Ryan and fixed his gaze on Robby. In a serious tone, he asked, "Do you share their views?"
"Does he?" Joey interjected, eager to provoke Max, who had ruined his future in a single night.
But this wasn't the time or place. Joey was here to let Max know he had a rival waiting at the upcoming San Fernando Valley Karate Tournament.
Max, however, wasn't interested in distant events. His focus was on the present, and he wasn't about to let this slide.
"Do you want to fight?"
"Max, this is a misunderstanding," Robby said, knowing Max wasn't someone who harbored grudges and acted purely on principle. Robby truly didn't want to cross him.
But Max, visibly annoyed, refused to let these events go and declared, "That's what you think. They came to our house, insulted us, and now they'll get a lesson they won't forget."
"Guys, stop this," Sam pleaded, trying to defuse the situation.
"Miguel, get your girlfriend out of here," Ryan snapped, unwilling to tolerate any more interruptions.
Joey broke into a cold sweat. He had hoped Max would accept his challenge for the tournament but had misjudged his mindset.
"There are fifteen of you. You'll fight fifteen of us. The captains will be you and Robby, while Ryan and I will lead our side. Simple rules: anyone who hits the mat loses and can't rejoin the fight. The match ends when one captain is knocked down."
Ryan removed his shirt, revealing his muscular frame, and shouted, "Special event!"
"Open the cage!"
Immediately, the security team began altering the fighting arena, expanding it. Mats were added to the ground to cushion any falls and minimize injuries.
Max stepped back, and more figures approached—Cobra Kai's best fighters, alongside others like Hawk, who also joined the lineup.
"We're fair. You can either kneel and apologize or announce the organization you represent," Ryan shouted, eager to start brawling.
Joey scowled and said, "We're from Miyagi-Do Karate."
"Then let the fight begin."
