Chapter 540: Discovered
Lara wasn't done with Luther. She had first obtained the information she needed, and then she had threatened him without worries.
Just like her children, she could rip the benefits she needed and then become heartless.
But she hadn't finished. Luther knew there was something else other than the trouble he had caused without the intention to.
«You know, don't you?» Lara asked. «You must have noticed. You know enough because you stopped testing them.»
«T-testing?»
«Melanie also noticed, but she didn't think you would figure it out so soon. But my kids talk with me. Scarlet told me about the animals. And Jaden said he felt in danger for a moment.»
«Oh, that... Did Melanie also notice?»
«I don't think she would have left you to continue if she did. She likely knows nothing.»
Luther sighed, relieved.
«What's that?» Lara said, crossing her arms. «Why do you care so much about her opinion... Don't tell me...»
«Yeah,» he admitted. «I came to Norwich to court her. But she's a little too cold with me. Oh, you could put a nice word for me, couldn't you?» he inquired, shameless like only a man in love could be.
Lara felt sorry for him. Melanie had lost her mate, and she was spending her nights alone and suffering. However, she would have not forgotten her husband for her whole life. Being a wolf, she was loyal for life.
But Lara didn't know how to explain it to Luther without revealing too much. She knew he suspected something, and she didn't want to confirm anything by asking questions. And she wasn't sure how much telling him he had no hope would be dangerous.

Her uncle seemed settled on courting Melanie until surrender. Would he even listen?
«Well, you should stop investigating about my children,» she said, but her tone was not as cold as she wanted. She was more sorry than wary, unfortunately.
«They took after their father,» he said, «and I bet their father did as well. They resemble Robert, and he would also have some odd behaviour at times. It explains so much, all of a sudden.»
Lara sighed, not willing to say that even the woman he loved wasn't human. But she had no right to reveal about Nate's family.
She kept her mouth shut and followed Luther's reasoning. She didn't want the Woods to fret over her uncle's discovery, but she was also worried about her children. He was a threat, even though he might not have any evil intentions.
«I will tell Nate that you found out,» Lara said. «I don't know what will happen next.»
«And you?» Luther said. «Are you all right with all of this? I mean, it's true you gave birth to his children, but you're not alone in the world. If you are afraid or don't want to be too close to them, just tell me. Now or in the future. I'll find a place for you and the twins.
I will help you if it happens... Unless Nate sends me to prison because of the incident with the press.»
«He won't,» Lara chuckled. «He doesn't know it started with you.»
«He will find out, sooner or later.»
«I won't let him hurt you,» she said. «Unless you become a threat to my children, of course.»
«But, how are you?»
«I'm fine with it. At first, it was odd, but not worse than the first times the cubs started growling.»
«They're so cute when they growl,» Luther said.
«What?»
«Yes? Oh, they almost fought in front of me, once. It was something trivial, so they made peace as soon as I told them. But they growled at one another.»
«It was our fault for not foreseeing what would happen,» Lara murmured. «We were too optimistic. Too relaxed.»
«It's fine. I'm their grandpa!»
«It might become dangerous as they grow up, though.»
«I'll be careful they're not hurt.»
«Dangerous for you!»
«Oh. Never mind.»
«I feel happy next to Nate. He's so careful around me that I would be a fool if I left him. Also, the twins need a father as much as a guide for when they grow up. I can't do that alone. I will give them a loving family, whatever the price.»
«You're so different from your mother that I wouldn't be surprised if they told me you were adopted or exchanged in the hospital.»
«I was not. I'm so similar to my father... And to you, to some degree.»
«Yes, we're similar,» Luther sighed. «We were both hurt by them for a story they made up. I'm so sorry for the leak of information. I would make it up to you if only it was possible, but I can't think of anything.»
«Ensure Grace can't hurt anyone anymore,» Lara said. «With her out of the picture, there won't be any reason to put my children in danger or under everyone's eyes to judge.»
«No one will judge you,» Luther pointed out. «If anything, everyone will feel sorry for your story. I don't think anyone sane would say a bad word about a loving mother.»
«I don't want it to weigh over them,» Lara said. «I don't want anyone to use it as a way to hurt them as they grow up!»
«People will forget,» Luther said, «just as they forgot how I used to embezzle money and other crimes. If they don't mind this and still talk to me as a peer, what do you think will happen with your children? Jaden and Scarlet are good kids, and they have you. They know you will love them no matter what.»
«Still, I am worried,» Lara sighed.
«I'm not a parent, so I can only guess, but I don't think that would change in other circumstances. It's simply part of the role.»
«Thank you,» Lara simply said. «For siding with me against creatures you don't know well, and for heartening me. It's more than my biological parents would ever do.»
«We're family,» Luther said. «This is the least I can do.»
