Chapter 4: Chapter 4: A Meeting of Shadows
The Black-Corner Region was a lawless land of chaos, a haven for those who thrived on violence and deception. Xiao Yan kept his hood low as he navigated the crowded streets of Black Wind City. His next target, Xie Mo, was a feared Dou Zong whose name struck terror across the region. The system had calculated his chances of victory at a dismal 20%, a reminder of the gap between their strengths.
> "Recommendation: Seek assistance. Higher chances of survival with allies."
Xiao Yan scoffed at the suggestion. Trust was a luxury he could no longer afford.
As he scouted for information on Xie Mo's whereabouts, a commotion drew his attention. In a narrow alley, a young woman fought off three bandits, her Dou Qi flickering erratically. Despite her skill, she was clearly outmatched. Xiao Yan hesitated. Intervening would expose him, but leaving her to her fate felt... wrong.
With a resigned sigh, he leaped into the fray. His movements were swift, and within moments, the bandits lay unconscious at his feet.
The woman, battered but defiant, eyed him warily. "I didn't need saving."
Xiao Yan smirked. "You're welcome anyway."
She introduced herself as Su Mei, a rogue Dou Shi seeking revenge against the bandit lord who had killed her family. Despite her initial reluctance, she agreed to accompany Xiao Yan after he hinted at a common enemy.
Together, they tracked Xie Mo to a hidden fortress deep in the mountains. As night fell, Xiao Yan studied the imposing structure. The system offered no shortcuts this time—only the grim promise of power if he succeeded.
Su Mei glanced at him, her eyes filled with both curiosity and concern. "You've got a strange aura about you. What are you really after?"
Xiao Yan didn't answer. The less she knew, the better.
