Chapter 15: Chapter 15: New Horizons
With the competition over, the Xiao Clan celebrated Xiao Yan's victory. The clan's courtyard was abuzz with excitement as members gathered to congratulate their rising star.
"You've brought great honor to the Xiao Clan," Xiao Zhan said, placing a proud hand on Xiao Yan's shoulder. "This is just the beginning, my son. You've shown everyone your potential."
Xiao Yan nodded, his gaze steady. "I'll continue to work hard, Father. This is only the first step."
Despite the celebrations, Xiao Yan's mind was already focused on the challenges ahead. His victory had made him a target, and he knew the other clans wouldn't take the rise of the Xiao Clan lightly.
As the festivities continued, a messenger arrived at the Xiao Clan's gates. The man was dressed in the robes of a traveling merchant, but his demeanor was anything but ordinary.
"I seek Xiao Yan," the messenger announced, his voice carrying an air of authority.
Xiao Zhan stepped forward, eyeing the man warily. "What business do you have with my son?"
The messenger handed over a letter, sealed with the insignia of the Jia Ma Empire's premier academy: the Jia Nan Academy.
"This letter is an invitation," the messenger explained. "Xiao Yan's performance has caught the attention of influential figures, and they wish to extend an offer for him to join the academy."
The crowd erupted into murmurs of surprise. Jia Nan Academy was known for producing some of the greatest cultivators in the empire, and an invitation was a rare honor.
Later that night, Xiao Yan sat with his father and the clan elders, the invitation letter spread out on the table before them.
"This is a great opportunity," one elder said. "Jia Nan Academy's resources and connections are unparalleled. Xiao Yan could grow even stronger there."
"But it also means leaving the clan," another elder countered. "The road ahead is fraught with danger, and he's still so young."
Xiao Zhan turned to Xiao Yan. "What do you think, my son? The choice is yours."
Xiao Yan considered the question carefully. While he felt a sense of responsibility to the Xiao Clan, he also knew that his path required him to step beyond the confines of his home.
"I'll go," Xiao Yan said firmly. "If I'm to protect the Xiao Clan and those I care about, I need to grow stronger. Jia Nan Academy is the best place to do that."
Xiao Zhan nodded, his expression a mix of pride and reluctance. "Very well. But remember, Xiao Yan, no matter how far you go, this will always be your home."
The following days were filled with preparation. Xiao Yan spent time with his family, sparring with Xiao Ning and sharing stories with Xiao Mei. The bond they shared grew stronger, even as the day of his departure loomed closer.
Meanwhile, the system continued to guide Xiao Yan in his cultivation.
"Host's current progress has unlocked a new feature: Skill Replication. Host can now replicate observed techniques at 50% efficiency. Continued practice will increase mastery."
Xiao Yan's eyes lit up at the announcement. "This will be invaluable at the academy," he thought.
On the morning of his departure, the entire Xiao Clan gathered to see Xiao Yan off. Xiao Zhan handed him a small pendant, its surface engraved with intricate runes.
"This belonged to your mother," Xiao Zhan said. "It's a protective charm. Keep it close, and it will guard you in times of danger."
Xiao Yan took the pendant, his heart heavy with emotion. "Thank you, Father. I'll treasure it."
As he mounted his horse, Xiao Yan turned to face the clan one last time. "I'll return stronger. Until then, take care of each other."
With that, he rode off, the road to Jia Nan Academy stretching out before him.
