Chapter 86: Falling behind
[Miyata's POV]
3-2.
The wind turned around.
"If you know any magic trick to stop Jude, now would be the right time to share it." Karasu asked with an awkward smile.
I stayed silent.
I knew that I was bringing our team down. In a normal match, my strategies could turn the tides of a game, but in a 3vs3 game. Each person's individual strengths played a huge role.
And I was still lacking.
My only redeeming qualities were my passing skills, but even those were far inferior to someone like Hiori who was clearly in a league of his own.
'Being a Walmart version of Hiori won't cut it.'
I need to find a way, to create my own chemical reaction. Or else I would certainly be falling behind. I need to follow Jude's example and create a new unpredictable variable.
"It's easier said than done." I sighed.
I knew what I had to do, but I didn't know how to do it. If only I had more time, I knew that I could come up with the perfect counter, but now there wasn't any time for that.
I needed to push myself beyond my limits once again.
I need to look at the bigger picture and find a way to surpass all those shitty geniuses around me.
My first instinct was to look around. Karasu and Hiori both wore the Blue Lock jersey of Team Red — contrasting with the clean white of Jude's team.
What would be the best way to win against a seemingly unbeatable team?
My mind raced.
I already knew our team's biggest weakness. We are the opposite of Team White. Jude, Yukimiya and even Otoya all had surreal weapons allowing them to score goals.
While I had no such weapon. Karasu and Hiori were also similar in that regard. They lacked Jude and Otoya's movements to position themselves. Nor did they have any special shot like Yukimiya's gyro shot.
Team Red's only strength was that we were able to link extremely well, but we're unable to create a destructive chemical reaction like Jude and Otoya demonstrated.
In short, we lack the ability to create danger.
I already scored once. But now I needed to find a way to score again, I needed to find my own formula to score.
Hmmm… An opportunity to score…
"This might work." A sudden thought came up.
"Hiori, come here for a second..."

[3rd POV]
Miyata walked up with the ball.
He didn't rush up and patiently looked around the field, taking in everyone's position and behavior.
'The best way to make use of our weapons...' Miyata repeated in his mind like a mantra, passing the ball to Karasu once again. His team wasn't short on talent. He just needed to find the best way to make them shine.
It was clear to everyone.
They were about to replicate their previous tactics. Using Hiori and Miyata's passes to give more options to Karasu.
Although simplistic, it is extremely effective.
Knowing this, Jude and Yukimiya who were the closest rushed in to block Karasu. They knew that he was their main striker. As long as they stopped him and blocked all his options, they would win.
Otoya took that into account and got in between him and Miyata. That way, even if he wanted to pass the ball back, it would end up being intercepted.
Karasu had no other way but to give up and send a rushed pass to Hiori.
Otoya immediately jumped up on the occasion and appeared next to Hiori, barely giving him any time to think.
"I'll trust you on this one." Hiori said as he created some distance between him and Otoya and arming his right leg for what seemed to pass.
"I don't really enjoy being ignored." Otoya kept his usual cool attitude and threw his leg in the way of the incoming ball to block it.
"Too bad," In a split second, Hiori cancelled his pass by rolling the ball to the side instead.
Otoya tried following through but it was too late. Hiori made use of the opening between Otoya's legs and sent a sharp cross.
"How did he do that…" Otoya was left stunned for the hundredth time today. It's like everyone had hidden abilities or were developing their weapons at a frightening speed.
Everyone assumed that the cross would once again be aimed at Karasu. Even between two people he had the physical ability to hold them off and try to attempt a shot — although it wouldn't be in the best conditions to score.
Jude and Yukimiya were both ready to jump up and intercept the pass, but it flew past their heads. Even Jude, who had the most reach when jumping up, was unable to hit it.
Did Hiori miss his pass?
"Fuck..."
Jude cursed as his eyes followed the trajectory of the ball.
Miyata slipped past their reach, and the ball landed right in front of him. It was hard to believe. Even without being able to look at him, Hiori was able to send out an incredibly accurate pass.
Now the final touch.
All Miyata had to do was push for a final sprint to reach the goal, before finally sending it straight inside the net.
"I'm also a striker!"
He was uncontested and easily scored.
3-3.
..
This was Miyata's plan.
Miyata and Hiori's chemical reaction — one nobody would expect — leading to Miyata's second goal of the game.
It was a simple idea but the execution would be extremely difficult.
Similar to his first goal, as well as Jude's first goal with Otoya.
Jude used the danger he represented as a way to help Otoya's weapon shine. Meanwhile, Miyata used his lack of danger to move past Team White's players and asked Hiori to send the ball to him instead of Karasu.
"Who would've expected he would be the one I would have to compete against for the most goals in this match." Jude laughed lightheartedly.
Jude recognized that his ex-teammate's idea was certainly impressive.
'He's not someone I can look down on.' Jude thought.
But even then, the one which impressed him the most was none other than Hiori.
Even with Otoya right in his face, he was able to follow through with the plan and pass the ball to a player he couldn't even see as Otoya blocked his vision.
If he wanted to get past him, or even shoot and score. There's no doubt that he could've done it.
"He might be even more of a problem than Karasu." Jude commented plainly.
