Chapter 12: I, Yamabuki Ditang, Will Never Fool Anyone
Wait a second… what did he say his name was?
Yamabuki Ditang blinked in disbelief. "Kirinji Tenshirō?" he repeated, staring at the man with the crew cut standing before him.
He glanced back at the large wooden tub he'd just been "cooked" in and then at the man in front of him, who was still holding the wooden spoon.
"Hold on, isn't this guy supposed to be part of Squad Zero?" Yamabuki thought, his mind racing. "Wait, wait, wait. According to the timeline, Kirinji Tenshirō only joins Squad Zero after the establishment of the Gotei 13. That means… at this point in history, he's just a regular doctor in Rukongai!"
The realization hit him like a thunderbolt. Not only was Kirinji not yet one of the exalted members of Squad Zero, but his spiritual pressure probably wasn't even fully developed yet. He was just an exceptionally skilled doctor with slightly stronger spiritual energy than the average person.
"Whoa," Yamabuki muttered under his breath. "I'm so lucky. I just ran into an SSR+SR character while out on a mission!"
Such was the fate of the so-called Child of Destiny. Was there anything luckier than this?
Kirinji, noticing Yamabuki's vacant expression, frowned. "Hey, kid, are you zoning out? What's with the weird look on your face? Do you want to fight or not?"
The man picked up a stick and held it in a threatening manner, looking like a delinquent spoiling for a brawl.
Yamabuki quickly waved his hands in mock surrender. "Fight you? No way! You're my savior, after all. How could I raise my hand against you?" He sighed dramatically, shaking his head. "It's such a pity, though…"
Kirinji raised an eyebrow. "A pity? What's that supposed to mean?"
"It's a pity that someone as talented as you is stuck out here in Rukongai," Yamabuki said, his voice taking on a persuasive tone. "With your medical skills, your courage, your looks—"
"Damn right, I'm handsome," Kirinji interrupted, puffing out his chest.
"Exactly!" Yamabuki exclaimed, latching onto the man's vanity. "With all those talents, you shouldn't be wasting away in obscurity here. A real man born in troubled times should take up a sword and accomplish extraordinary feats! Don't you agree?"
Kirinji's expression softened slightly, and Yamabuki could see that he was considering his words. "Hmm… you've got a point…"
Yamabuki grinned inwardly. Time to seal the deal.
"Don't bury your talent and good looks in a place like this," he continued, his voice brimming with passion. "Come join the Gotei 13! We offer great benefits—insurance, stable pay, two days off a week, and even annual leave! Plus, our mission is noble: to protect the Soul Society and maintain the balance of the three realms. A beautiful tomorrow is waiting for you!"
Kirinji tilted his head, intrigued. "The Gotei 13? Never heard of it."
"Just from the name alone, you can tell it's a righteous organization!" Yamabuki declared, extending a hand. "Our mission is to protect the weak, bring justice, and safeguard the balance of all existence. Join us, and you'll make history!"
Kirinji's eyes lit up. As much as he loved his quiet life as a healer, Yamabuki's words stirred something inside him. Who wouldn't want to use their talents for something greater? To contribute to a cause that truly mattered?
And besides, he was exceptionally handsome. Wasting such looks in Rukongai felt like a crime.
"Alright," Kirinji said after a moment, a grin spreading across his face. "You've convinced me. I'll join your Gotei 13!"
Yamabuki clapped his hands together triumphantly. "Excellent! Welcome aboard, Kirinji Tenshirō!"
By the time Yamabuki returned to Shihōin's estate, he had not only survived his mission but also gained two new recruits—Kirinji Tenshirō and Quebo Chōjirō, along with Hanako tagging along for good measure.
"Yamamoto! I'm back!" Yamabuki shouted, kicking open the door dramatically. "Did you miss me while I was gone?"
Before he could step inside, Saito's foot came flying toward his face in a vicious kick.
Yamabuki smirked. "Ha! Like a simple kick is going to hit me—look at this, the Iron Bridge Technique!"
With practiced ease, he bent backward, narrowly dodging the kick. Unfortunately, this meant that Saito's attack continued unchecked—and her foot landed squarely on Kirinji's face.
"Ahhh!" Kirinji shouted, stumbling backward. "What the hell, lady?! I didn't even do anything!"
Yamabuki winced. "Oops. My bad."
"You still remember how to come back, huh?" Saito shouted, glaring at him. "I thought you'd defected! Don't think you're off the hook—I'm gonna beat the crap out of you!"
"Saito, stop."
The sharp, commanding voice of Yamamoto Genryūsai cut through the chaos. The moment Saito heard it, she immediately froze, her aggressive demeanor vanishing.
Yamabuki blinked in confusion. "What the…? How did Yamamoto tame her of all people?"
Before he could ask, Kirinji rolled up his sleeves and stepped forward. "Alright, you crazy woman, you wanna fight? Let's go! I'm not the type to let a random kick slide!"
"Everyone, calm down!" Yamabuki shouted, throwing himself between them. "Let's not start a fight in front of the Captain! Besides, I brought some new recruits!"
Inside the courtyard, Yamamoto sat sipping tea, his expression unreadable. He glanced up as Yamabuki approached, noting the boy's slightly disheveled appearance.
"Welcome back," Yamamoto said, his voice gruff. "What happened during your mission?"
Yamabuki bowed deeply, then recounted everything: the appearance of the Gillian-class Hollow, its evolution into an Adjuchas, his near-death experience, his conversation with his Zanpakutō spirit, and finally, how Kirinji had saved his life.
Yamamoto's eyes narrowed slightly as he studied Kirinji. Even at a glance, he could sense the man's strong spiritual pressure and expertise. A talent like his was exactly what the fledgling Gotei 13 needed.
"You've done well," Yamamoto finally said. "Recruiting skilled individuals is crucial to our growth."
Yamabuki beamed, but his smile faltered when Yamamoto glanced at the two children standing behind him.
"And what about them?" Yamamoto asked, his tone stern. "We're not running an orphanage. These children serve no purpose here."
Yamabuki's heart sank. "But Captain—"
"Feed them and send them back to Rukongai," Yamamoto interrupted. "The Gotei 13 doesn't have the resources to care for idle people."
Yamabuki clenched his fists. "Captain, these kids may be useless now, but they have potential! If we train them, they'll grow up loyal to the Gotei 13. Isn't our mission to protect the Soul Society? To do that, we need to raise strong allies, starting now."
Yamamoto's gaze softened slightly as he looked at Chōjirō. Finally, he sighed. "Very well. They can stay for now. But they'll need to prove their worth."
Chōjirō's face lit up with joy. "Thank you, sir! I promise I'll work hard!"
Meanwhile, Hanako was placed under Kirinji's care to assist him with his medical duties. Though the term "nurse" didn't exist yet, her role was essentially just that.
As Yamabuki watched the scene unfold, a satisfied smile spread across his face. "I, Yamabuki Ditang, may be a lot of things, but I would never fool anyone…"
