Chapter 181

Frankly, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. I wasn’t sure about the demon, but due to the quest, our roles were already determined. The disappearance of human Clyde meant that <God’s Play> was heading towards a bad ending route.

Yet, I coldly shook off his hand. But Clyde grabbed my hand again as if his pride was hurt. This time, he interlaced our fingers so tightly that I couldn’t shake him off.

“I was wrong, Theresa.”

“Let go.”

“Forgive me just this once, will you? I’ll listen to you from now on. I’ll do everything you say, please.”

Sadly, his words held no trust since he was a demon.

“I don’t need it, so let go of my hand and leave. I don’t want to see you yet.”

“No.” His voice wasn’t threatening, but there was a firm determination not to back down. “I don’t want to leave. Just hate me, despise me. You can curse and hit me.”

I was flabbergasted. “Didn’t you just say you’d listen to me, do as I say?”

“Yes, I will. As long as you do not tell me to disappear from your side.” Clyde rubbed his forehead against the back of my hand as if begging for just one more chance.

Did he think this would weaken my resolve? I tried to shake off his hand again and hit his back and shoulders as hard as I could. Yet, Clyde didn’t care. Instead, he said, “If you hit there, you’ll hurt yourself,” and gently moved to a less vulnerable spot.

My will to resist crumbled. “Despicable.”

He apologized at my accusation.

“I don’t believe your words.”

He apologized again.

I covered myself with the blanket up to my head, showing I didn’t want to listen. Of course, one hand was still held by him.

“Good night.”

I couldn’t even bother to respond to such an absurd farewell. Was my decision to completely ignore him a mistake? Eventually, I fell asleep. There were no dreams in that sleep.

* * *

I woke up to the sound of raindrops tapping on the window.

It’s raining again today.

I like the rain, but not the cold it brings. Despite it being June, I forgot to put on an extra layer yesterday, which is why I should’ve woken up shivering, but for some reason, I felt slightly warm.

As I opened my eyes, I was immediately greeted by Clyde’s mystically smiling face, as if veiled in mist.

“Did you sleep well?”

Ding!

[What a revelation to start the morning.]

“…You’re still here?!” I exclaimed loudly but then quickly shut my mouth, worried Eloise might hear and come.

“If you’re worried about your maid hearing, don’t be. She’s not here.”

His words made my expression harden.

“Don’t tell me you did something to Eloise?”

Clyde answered nonchalantly. “Well, I did. I made her think she had a holiday and hypnotized her to go out and enjoy.”

If so, that was a relief… or not.

“The one who should be leaving is you, not Eloise.”

He didn’t respond to my comment and instead pointed towards the table. “I’ve prepared breakfast, so eat up.”

On the table, there was toast soaked in egg and cooked, along with maple syrup and a cup of milk. I followed Clyde to the table and sat down. The steam rising from the bread indicated it was freshly made. The smell was nice, but it seemed homemade rather than bought.

“Did you make this?”

“Yes.” Clyde cut a piece of syrup-drenched toast and brought it to my mouth. “

Ah

, open up.”

Ding!

[Ah~]

“…What are you doing?”

“I’m feeding you.”

“I can eat by myself.”

Ah

.”

I caught the dripping syrup with my hand and brought the piece of toast to my mouth, glaring at Clyde, who eventually let me eat it.

He licked the syrup off his fingers and asked, “How is it?”

“… It’s good.”

“Eat a lot. You haven’t eaten anything since yesterday.”

Come to think of it, I spent all of yesterday sleeping and missed dinner and studying. Realizing this made me quite hungry.

Clyde stubbornly fed me until I was full. My stomach felt like it was going to burst.

Ding!

[Precious person.]

Having eaten, it was time to get ready. Normally, Eloise would have helped me, but today, I had to manage on my own…

“Shall I help?”

“Are you crazy? Get out!”

Getting ready for school in my uniform wasn’t complicated. I quickly finished preparing myself with magic and braided my hair loosely to the side before heading downstairs.

“Clyde.”

Expecting him to be there, I called out his name, and Clyde appeared, dressed in his uniform with his bangs swept back. Despite his neat appearance without any accessories, he didn’t look like a demon.

He stretched out his hand towards me as if saying to hold it. “We’re going to go to school using teleportation magic because it’s raining. No one will see us together.” There was a cautious look in his eyes as if asking, ‘Isn’t that what you want?’

Taking his hand would mean resuming our temporary relationship. Or rather, from the moment I failed to push him away last night, it had already resumed.

Maybe it’s for the best.

Upon taking his hand, the scenery changed. This was a place I had never actually seen before.

“This is… your personal lab?”

While I was curiously looking around, Clyde pulled something out of thin air.

“Take this.”

It was a key.

“You can use it whenever you want. After all, that guy…”  Clyde stopped mid-sentence as if he made a mistake and corrected himself. “I mean, I don’t use it much.”

‘That guy’ must have referred to human Clyde, but he corrected it to ‘I’.

Only then did I realize the odd sense of dissonance I had been feeling from Clyde.

He’s deliberately imitating human Clyde, from appearance to behavior.

Was this the ‘effort’ he mentioned when we fought in the rain?

Absorbed in thought, I stood staring blankly until Clyde gently held my pinky finger and said, “You don’t need to go to a private study room. You can study here.”

Normally, booking a private study room was as difficult as getting tickets to an idol concert.

But studying in the open library would be distracting because of people offering tributes.

Lately, the attention towards me has been annoyingly high.

“If you disturb me, I’ll leave.”

As I started to unpack my bag and take out my books, Clyde’s expression brightened. He naturally took the seat next to me and behaved quietly, allowing me to concentrate on my studies. However, when I encountered a difficult part, Clyde offered to help.

“Shall I explain?”

“You?”

Clyde took the pen from my hand and neatly organized the magical equations, making them easier to understand.

“This professor’s lectures are not very friendly. Without reading other magicians’ papers, you might find some parts difficult.”

“Is that so?”

“Instead of solving each one by one, which takes time, you can use a different formula…”

Surprisingly, he was a good teacher and helped me solve the difficult parts quickly.

“You’re really good at teaching.”

My genuine admiration made Clyde bury his face in his arms and laugh. His ears, not hidden by his arms, turned red. “It feels good to be praised.”

Watching him delight like a child made me instinctively pat his head. Clyde closed his eyes, enjoying the touch. The sound of rain, the gentle light, the pleasant smell, and the soft touch of his hair between my fingers… Strangely, these trivial things felt significant. It felt like we were soothing the rough wounds we inflicted on each other by showing our lowest selves.

Yet, part of me was suspicious that I was being deceived by this man. That this couldn’t possibly be his true nature, that he was bewitching me by imitating human Clyde.

Was this what being knowingly deceived felt like? I willingly allowed myself to be deceived. Whether it was to smoothly complete the quest or because the façade of human Clyde weakened my resolve, I wasn’t sure. My heart, once clear in distinguishing between a demon and a human, was now confused.

Was this his intention?

When I stopped petting his head, Clyde opened his eyes. His eyes, clear as a winter sky after the clouds have parted, pierced through me. At that moment, as he looked up at me from his prone position, he quickly pressed his lips against mine.

The kiss was hurried, with his breathing heavy. He moved with a desperation not seen in him before. As my cheek, caught along with my hair, was caressed by his urgent hand, he seemed to pour himself over me.

When my neck began to ache from tilting my head, I was suddenly lifted onto the table, our lips never parting. When the kiss seemed endless, I tapped his shoulder to stop. Clyde reluctantly separated our lips with a scratchy sound.

“Why?”

“How long were you planning to continue?”

“I could go on forever.”

His words implied he wished to continue indefinitely. I was astounded by his audacity.

“Stop now.” At my firm words, Clyde bowed his head deeply.

Sigh

… You’re too cruel.”

“And you’re too selfish.”

Clyde looked up at me with resentful eyes before stealing a quick kiss. “Even your cruelty makes me crazy.”

Ding!

[I’m also going crazy because this moment makes me so happy.]
