Chapter 4: Final Card
"I presume this is your first job." Atlas said as he dropped the resumè on the table close to him.
"I won't call it my first given the fact that I've not gotten the job yet." Annabelle replied back
Atlas again studied her.
"You can communicate in sign language." He said, his voice softer now
Annabelle nodded with a small smile
"How is that?" Atlas asked and watched as the smile disappeared from Annabelle's face.
"It's a long story I'd rather not tell." The tone in her voice was rather chilly and final so Atlas dropped the question.
"What's your fortê?" He asked
Annabelle squinted in confusion.
"What're you good at?" Atlas repeated the question clearly enjoying the look on her face.
Annabelle clenched her fist, this boy was mocking her.
"I can cook, I'm a very good cook I'll have you know." She sounded very proud about this.
Atlas observed her one more time. Her choice of words, her composure, her countenance, the way she was being carefree with him and also her expression earlier when she had learned she was in the Lloyd's Mansion. Everything formed into a piece and he knew what she was up to, too bad.
"Pretty lady..." He began, "how would you feel if I asked you to work as a Nanny."
Annabelle froze on the spot.
"My Nanny to be exact." Atlas smiled charmingly
Annabelle could hardly keep up with what was happening, or was she just dumb? She thought.
"N..nanny?" She stuttered and laughed nervously
"Yes." Atlas replied simply.
Annabelle sighed as she thought about this. It was time to use her trump card.
"There's going to be a...."
"You've got the wrong person kid." Annabelle interrupted
"Excuse me."
"You've got the wrong person, I definitely won't want to work as a nanny for a sassy kid like you, I have standards you know." Annabelle continued, sounding almost evil
Atlas sat back. "Is that so? Then why'd you come here?"
"I wasn't supposed to be here, there should be a missup somewhere." Annabelle continued in a bratty tone
It was clear as day what Annabelle was trying to do. He could see past her act.
The thing that confused him the most was why someone would ever refuse a once in a lifetime opportunity. All the other candidates had one fault after another.
Rude, no one was able to communicate with Mrs. Yuri because she was mute. He had purposely told her to welcome them in and make sure to communicate with signs but each of them were rude too her, some insulted her for being a nuisance.
Others tried to soften him by treating him like a kid, offering sweets and trying to win his affection in shabby ways.
The worst of all were those he tried to get in touch with his dad, they saw it as a way to make theirselves known to Duncan.
But here this human was, this human as pretty as goddess with equally pretty eyes. Here she was trying to dodge this opportunity, an opportunity many would die for.
Was she normal at all? He thought.
A thought came to his mind and he smiled.
"Fine then.."
Annabelle stopped talking and looked at him.
"You're free to leave now, I'll get back to you with results of this interview." Atlas said
Annabelle chuckled, she was darn sure the kid wasn't going to hire her in anyways.
She stood up and smiled brightly.
"It was truly an honour to have met you, Young master, you're quiet talented for your age."
"I know that, it's clearly obvious that I exceed charisma and intelligence." Atlas replied
Annabelle laughed, this kid was truly funny. She walked closer to him and patted his hair.
"It was just a compliment. But, you shouldn't try to grow up too fast, this childhood is something you can only enjoy once." She said softly and pulled away
Her words seemed to have an effect in him cause he looked almost surprised.
She smiled at him and bid him goodbye, her long hair swaying behind her as she turned to leave.
The door closed as she stepped out and Atlas's hand reached up to touch his hair, where Annabelle had patted earlier.
"Atlas." A sweet soft voice called and he looked up to see his twin sister coming down the stairs.
He smiled and walked to her. "Did you sleep well?" He asked and the girl nodded.
Atlanta, Atlas's twin sister was nothing like Atlas or Duncan. She was the princess of the family but had a weak heart, she was rather smallish and timid. Maybe because of her illness but she was also as mischievous and smart.
Atlas treated his sister with nothing but care and love, he was like a big brother despite being her twin. Atlanta on her part adored Atlas and was always proud of him.
"I heard voices, where you interviewing again?" Atlanta asked as Atlas made her sit.
"It wasn't as boring as the others, this was quite interesting." Atlas replied
"So, will we be getting a nanny soon?" Atlanta's eyes brightened
Atlas smirked as he stared at the door.
"We'll see." He replied
Atlanta huffed. "Again with your coded talk, I'm not as smart as you, you know?" She pouted.
Atlas laughed as he squatted. "Sorry Lanta, I'll be more convenient next time." He said and rubbed her hair
Atlanta squealed in delight.
....
Annabelle got home and fell on the couch, completely drained.
God, that kid really had her in a tight spot and Torreto....
She pulled out her phone and quickly dialed his number. He picked at the fourth ring.
"Guess where I ended up today?" She asked, tapping her foot angrily on the floor.
"The Lloyd's Mansion." Came the indifferent reply
"Exactly! Why?!" Annabelle shouted dramatically
"Be quiet kid, I did you a solid by recommending you to that job, please tell me you got it." Torreto asked
Annabelle sat back proudly. "I didn't, I completely screwed it up, I'm sure the kid already forgot about me the moment I walked out the door." She replied, staring at her nails
Torreto groaned in frustration. "Have I spoiled you too much?" He Wondered
"I'm your girl after all, come back and let me murder you for what you did today." Annabelle said an hung up
She inhaled deeply and exhaled. Now that was settled, the next thing to do was eat.
She stood up and walked to the fridge to get some snacks for herself. Life was truly wonderful.
~ Two weeks later ~
Annabelle, home alone because Torreto had gone on a business trip, had a bowl of chips in front of her as she watched her favorite show Squid Game 2.
There was no such thing as a result comeback and she knew that the kid would have cancelled out her name from the register.
"I'm a freaking genius." She muttered proudly
There was a bang on the door and Annabelle frowned .
What the fuck'! The person banged on the door much louder and harder this time and she groaned, clearly pissed off.
"Who the fuck.... Mr Brown." Annabelle faltered when she saw it was her landlord.
"You owe me rent young lady." Mr Brown said
"Huh, that's... Not possible...."
"Oh but it is, I have enough on my table and I need that rent by Tomorrow, didn't your father tell give you the money." Mr Brown shot back in annoyance.
Annabelle was clearly confused about this. She didn't know if Torreto had paid or not, all she knew was that they weren't owing rent.
She watched as the landlord walked out muttering angrily.
Annabelle immediately grabbed her phone and tried to call Torreto but it was switched off.
"I'm screwed!" She lamented, how was she going to get the money to pay rent, why didn't Torreto tell her anything.
She tried to call him again but then her phone beeped.
Her eyes widened at what she saw, it couldn't be true!
An unknown number called and with shaky hands she picked the call.
"H..hello."
"Pretty lady..."
Annabelle's heart beat stopped for a few seconds before it started again an at a face rate.
"You start work tomorrow, that's your payment for the first week. Congratulations, hope to see you soon." Then the call got cut.
Annabelle palmed her mouth in shock.
"Holy freaking hell!"
