Chapter 32: Rose Petals: The King That Wasn't-Jushtin the Uncalculated
Summary: A tale of the lone king of the Butterfly liniage.
Today was the day. "A prince!" "Can you believe it?" "They're so smart and kind. It's a shame." "If they were born a girl it may have been perfect." A day that the citizens of Mewni were anticipating for years, due to the major controversy that had been held over it since Skywyne's child was born: A prince being given the wand.
It wasn't like a male Butterfly was inconceivable, it was just the matter of fact they had been relegated to second or third born children at best and distant cousins at worst. But an only boy child, being a direct inheritor of the throne, of the royal magic wand? It was practically unheard of. Mewni had been ruled by a Queen since the very beginning.
What was even stranger was Queen Skywyne's acceptance, and even seeming eagerness at the prospect rather than the hesitation and reluctance most of the Kingdom held. Then again given the mother Lyric …
"Justin Butterfly, please step forward." The queen herself greeted the boy, a smile on her face as the boy walked, dressed with elegance and fashion. "Do you accept the responsibility held for generations since the beginning of Mewni itself, to guide your kingdom to a better future, to uphold the legacy of the Butterfly name and wield this magic for the greater good of your people?"
"I do." The boy spoke. "I promise to bring Mewni a light brighter than any it has seen before." The boy bowed, humility shown across his face. It was an odd sight for sure, given the boy's rather outgoing and prideful outlook whenever he was caught roaming the villages.
"Then I grant you the most sacred heirloom our kingdom has to offer, the most valuable possession I own, aside from you yourself, my son." That warm maternal smile filled every townsmen with a warm fuzzy feeling to everyone.
The wand was transferred, the clock spinning as it's wings turned pink, the object being devoured by an aligator, which replaced the new head. "I can't wait to show this to Satan and Flutter." The boy spoke with a smile. "Thank you mother, I vow to never let your expectations down."
"Oh…don't tell me I was late for it again." A large pink woman entered the room, causing a bit of a commotion, rushing to a spot near the Queen's side.
"My dear Rose." The queen laughed. "Don't tell me you plan on making this a common trend to show up after the wand is passed on."
"I was hoping to get it down sometime in the next century, but it might take a little longer." The two lovely women shared a laugh. "I look forward to what you create, Prince Jushtin."
"Oh..ah..Yeah, I suppose I can't wait either." The cool confidence of the boy slightly slipped as a blush formed over his face. Looks like he was around that age.

"Focus." Justin was snapped out of his daydream. "I know you find me appealing, but you really should do more with your duties, my young prince."
"What, no, of course I wasn't daydreaming, I was just lost in the vast world of numbers, heh." He lamely excused as he tried to ignore the welling embarrassment forming within him. It was bad enough having a crush on his mother's best friend, he didn't need another one for people to tease him about.
"Then let's get you into something more … specific." She said it in such a seductive way he could feel his heart race. "Rain is going to drown crops, you have sixteen tarps covering a twenty by seventy area. On a forty by one hundred area farm, how many crops could you save?" She asked.
"Um … seventy percent?" He answered. "Unless you use a method which allows crops to grow closer together to save space." He thought about it deeper. "Maybe there would be a way to fix the spacing problem if we can tell the exact distance crops need to grow for each plant, instead of guessing based on trial and error. Maybe a spell that uses mother's principle to accelerate a small biome multiple times and see the results."
"It surprises me just how much thought you put into that scenario."
"My mother is the Queen of hours. Math is practically flowing through my blood by this point." He went through a few personal notes. "Like right here. I can personally use the doppler effect to calculate just how 'lit' I can make the kingdom if everything goes off without a hitch."
She hums. "You use a lot of magic ideas that simply focus on discovery, rather than fixing the problems themselves." She notes.
"Eh, I never planned on using it much." Mostly just parlor tricks and rides. "It's better if people who want to become better at their jobs learn how to do it, so they don't become dependent on magic itself like they did for mom."
"Yeah, and that way we can use all that extra time lighting up the streets and being fabulous!" His wand spoke up, biting down on his desk. "A better Mewni means a better personal life."
"Exactly, little guy, hanging out with da cru is the best. Living the high life!" He shouted with joy.
His teacher looked a little flummoxed at the sight of his wand speaking. "Exactly how sentient is that? It's so silly looking I usually forget it's alive."
"Sentient enough to smell the perfume you used this morning." It spoke back to her. "Lavender and peaches…nice combination."
She hummed. "I think your ideas are very nice." Her smile made his heart flutter. "Now let's move onto decimals, and make sure to be very precise with it … I'll know."

Skywyne looked at the picture of her son on the wall, staring at those eyes full of wonder and innocence. The poor boy … the sweet innocent child. She heard the door open. "A guard said you wanted to talk to me?" Asked her friend … her only friend.
"Yes, Rose, thank you, thank you for coming alone…there's only so many people I can talk to personally about something like this."
"I'll always have time for my favorite queen." That was comforting to hear. "So what's up, are you hitting your mid-life crisis? Apparently that's a thing with humans." She was only in her thirties.
"You…you know how the Commission is nowadays, so controlling, always trying to find their way to have a say in every matter when it comes to magic?" Skywyne's frown sunk deeper. "Apparently that extends to how they believe each Butterfly should act, or be for that matter."
"Act and be?" The woman asked in confusion. "Jushtin is a great kid, he's one of the nicest people I know … even if his parties get a little wild."
"That's the problem…the fact it's a 'he' and not a 'her'." Just saying it outloud filled her insides with dread.
Rose laughed. "Oh come on, it's not like the Commission can control gender. So what if they get a little uppity-"
"They've been pressuring for another child." Rose finally seemed to understand the severity of what was going on. "Along with my husband … and concerned town folks that are Misandist."
"That…that's ridiculous. He's only had the wand for like two years, and he's eager to prove his worth."
"I know … I know he has … and I know how short his rule is." She felt tears drop. "But the pressure is too great … it's been going on for sixteen years and it hasn't stopped …" She held her head in her hands. "I can't keep this up."
"You don't have to do this…you shouldn't have to do this." Rose brought her into a warm embrace. "You're not some…baby maker that gives whatever some simple minded idiots what they want…"
"It's already too late." Rose froze when she heard the words. "I'm pregnant…they confirmed it will be a girl.." She cried even harder, hugging the woman desperately. "I'm going to take my child's future from him … I'm going to be worse than my own mother …"
"No, you're not Lyric, you'll never be anything like Lyric. The fact you care about it this much proves it." Rose's chin rested on her shoulder. "You're a good person Skywyne, never forget this. You were an amazing queen that did everything she could for her child."
========================================================================
"So what did you wanna talk about?" The young king asked as they went away from his crew. Rose knew it was going to be a difficult discussion, but decided now was the time to talk it out, rather than surprise him when the girl in question was born.
"Your mother is having a girl." She decided to tell him. "You'll have to abdicate the throne." She waited to see how he would take the news, ready to support him.
Jushtin blinked, looking down at his wand. "... Bummer, Whizzbag really did like that creaky knees spell." They shrugged. "Anything else?"
That….that was weirdly more casual then the gem was expecting it to be. "Jushtin, you do realize what this means? You won't be waiting until your sister comes of age, you'll be handing the position right by to your mother."
"Oh really? Mom has been planning every minute that she'd spend her time during retirement. That does make things a bit inconvenient for her." Jushtin responded casually again.
She saw a look in his eyes she only saw in herself a few times … and Garnet. "You knew this would happen, didn't you?"
"..I mean, when you think about it, maybe it's for the best." The boy still smiled, even though she could hear a tint of sadness within his voice. "Mewni gets the Queen they've been waiting for, and I can go back to what I do best: making friends." He waved over to the group, who smiled and waved back.
"Jushtin, you don't need to put on a brave face.."
"Well, I always fancied myself a courageous soul, so thank you for noticing." The boy sent her a playful wink she's seen a million times before."I'm more worried about my mothers brave face."
"Your mother wishes it could be different." Rose reassured him. "She wanted to see you succeed and have everyone know just how special you are to her."
He smiled wider than she's seen all night. "In that case Rose Guard, I have but one humble request." He gave a polite bow. "For my last night as king, accompany me for a magical and probably drug filled stroll."
"If the king demands it, who am I to deny?" She was aware of the boy's obvious attraction to her, though she never really thought much of it. If the night led somewhere more intimate however… then whatever happens in Mewni stays in Mewni.

Princess Spider-bite stared into her lover's eyes as the veil was lifted. She was marrying into the Butterfly royal family with the most kind of princes. To think the people were so foolish as to reject him from his rightful place on the throne. "Do you, Princess Spider-bite, taken this man as your husband, forever till the day you die and beyond." The priest,'who happened to be a Lucitor and Jushtin's personal friend, asked her.
"Yes, I do." She spoke, smiling at this most wondrous of days.
"And do you, Prince Butterfly, promise to take this woman as your wife, loving and caring for her until the day you die?"
"I do." He spoke the magic words that made her heart sore brightly. This man deserves so much, the prince who brought peace between kingdoms.
"The rings please?"
The ring bearer, who happened to be a Ponyhead and another of Jushtin's friends, came up. "The magic living up to your expectations?" He whispered.
"That and then some, my fine flying stallion." Her prince received the rings in his hands as he gently place it on her finger
She took a look at her sister, her bridesmaid, smiling encouragingly at her, and Jushtin's best man, Sazmo who patted the Prince on the shoulder encouragingly.
"If there are any objections." Lucitor spoke sarcastically with an eye roll. "Speak now or forever hold your peace."
The door slammed open as her ex boyfriend, Spider-web, strolled in. "I object to this frankly redi-" Said man was dogpilled by Skywyne, Solaria, and the Rose Guard simultaneously.
"I know that's it's tradition to just say it, but it's not like I'm going to change my mind just because he shouts in the middle of a wedding." She rolled her eyes.
"Just a precaution in case he does something." The Rose Guard waved her hand.
"Don't! Interrupt! My big Bros! Wedding!" Solaria violently beat the man.
"She's quite strong for her age, isn't she?" She turned to her soon to be husband.
"She is, that strength will serve her well as the future Queen." The man she loved waved off. "I can only hope she'll be willing to listen to whatever advice I have to offer."
"You're the man that united most of our kingdoms through friendship alone. There's practically no calculation for what you're capable of."
"Well that's who I am isn't it?" He smirked. "Now shall we encapsulate this magical moment of ours?" Truly the most magical moment of her life.
