Chapter 3 - However, Nothing Happened
However, Nothing Happened
Finally, at last I made it into the academy. While listening to the principal’s boring speech, I was suddenly overcome with emotion. Looking back at how much I had to twist my body to sit in this seat, it was enough to make me shudder.
Back then I really thought I was going to die. Somehow I managed to survive well.
But dwelling on the past didn’t last long. I needed to focus on the quest now.
Glancing at the status window, I could see the quest window written in conspicuously large letters as if saying “don’t ignore me.”
There was an ambiguous phrase written there: ‘Attract the heroine’s attention during the entrance ceremony. 0/6’
The rewards were relationship points with the heroine and stat points.
Attract attention. It probably wasn’t telling me to act wild and be called crazy, but rather to make a deep impression by dramatically overcoming adversity.
One might ask what adversity there could be, but monsters were scheduled to appear during this entrance ceremony.
It wasn’t a real incident. The monsters’ specs were weakened to the point where they couldn’t harm humans.
The trouble that occurs during the entrance ceremony was like a kind of test that Heros Academy gives at every entrance ceremony.
Of course, this information was strictly controlled. Heros Corporation, which was essentially like the government, thoroughly concealed information related to the academy.
Saying things like it would lose meaning if everyone knew about the surprise test.
It was information so well hidden that even I wouldn’t have known without knowledge of the original work.
Standing out here could even change your class assignment. You might say this is like some 1,000-point question at a training camp quiz show but… that’s just how it was set up.
They wanted to shake the sand through a sieve to see if they missed any talent.
Of course, most who got caught in the sieve ended up in Class A regardless of whether they were in the Hunter or Hero Department, so it was essentially just setting up the stage for the main characters.
I finished preparing to jump out at any time while drawing up my power in advance. I was confident I wouldn’t fall behind anyone in terms of speed.
Right now as the principal exits while receiving applause, the monster should…
…should appear.
This is strange. Right now, a monster should have fallen from above the principal, tearing apart the principal’s clone.
However, nothing happened.
In the original work, an incident occurred at this time. But for some reason, nothing particularly happened yet.
What’s going on? Are they starting late? The female student sitting right next to me also had a puzzled expression like me.
She too had prepared by drawing up magical power in advance like me. She must have known about the upcoming incident through some means.
There were descriptions of people who noticed incidents would occur beforehand through innate intuition or preliminary investigation, so it wasn’t strange.
The female student next to me must be one of those types.
Cat ears twitching atop silver bobbed hair as if confused, heterochromatic eyes. And a figure that made you wonder how this could possibly be an incoming student’s physique.
For a moment I wondered if she was a heroine. With such distinctive looks, she must have appeared in the original work.
But there was no such heroine. There was one Ein race heroine, but she had horns, not cat ears.
It’s strange that someone who looks like that didn’t appear at least once in the original work. But the thought didn’t continue long.
Just because someone didn’t appear in the original work doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.
They must be someone who simply wasn’t in the spotlight, someone who just wasn’t near the protagonist. While I was thinking this and wondering why nothing was happening.
Suddenly the quest window crackled as if having an error.
What’s wrong with this now. Since the status window had never done this before, even I couldn’t help but be bewildered.
Though I knew it had no physical form, I tapped the status window wondering if tapping it might fix it, and only then did the status window stop crackling and display normal text again.
‘Fate has been distorted.’ ‘Emergency Quest: Fix the development!’ ‘Attract the heroines’ attention by today. (1/7) ▶View list’ ‘Reward: Relationship points with heroines, Stat points.’
…What’s going on here? I was confused. Fate distorted? Fix the development? I couldn’t understand what this meant at all.
That was confusing enough, but somehow the number of heroines had increased from 6 to 7. Additionally, I had already attracted one’s attention.
What in the world is going on here. I couldn’t understand any of it. Yet my trembling hand was pressing to view the list of heroines whose attention I had succeeded in attracting.
Blanca. It was a name I’d never seen before. And the photo in the profile window was-
The female student sitting right next to me.
According to the original development, naturally an incident should have occurred during the entrance ceremony and Min-ho should have resolved it splendidly.
And through that achievement, Min-ho should have been assigned to Class A. But something went wrong, and none of that happened.
Both Min-ho and I had similar expressions. Expressions wondering what was happening right now.
We probably would have stayed blankly like that if our phones hadn’t rung.
Shocking as it was shocking, we still had to check our class assignments. Class A, of course. And next to me, Yeonhwa was squealing about getting into Class A.
Jin-hyeon was making dispirited comments about somehow ending up in the same class too. However, Min-ho wasn’t smiling at all.
As much as I wanted to peek… I held back. That seemed like it would be wrong.
But suddenly he stood up and headed toward the staff room inside the auditorium rather than the exit.
Was he going to appeal his grades? That won’t work.
But, I don’t like being in a different class from Min-ho. That was a bad flow for both him and me.
He would have to submit to a story completely different from what he knew, and I wouldn’t be able to see my favorite character up close.
I hope he can somehow negotiate well. While praying inwardly, I eavesdropped on Min-ho’s conversation with the principal.
However, it was quite different from what I had expected.
First of all, Min-ho wasn’t trying to appeal his grades.
What he was questioning was why nothing happened during the entrance ceremony. For a moment I wondered if he was originally such a bold character, but soon understood after seeing the principal’s reaction.
Min-ho was acting right now. Acting as Heros Academy’s most favorite type of person – someone who strives to improve despite already being excellent.
And the principal’s answer to that question was simple. For safety reasons. The principal continued, saying it was because of one particular student.
“Since you’re in Class A, you’ll meet her soon. Her ability shown during the entrance exam was… beyond standard specifications. If that student had tried to resolve an incident, both students and faculty might have gotten caught up in it. Please understand.”
An unprecedented ability user. Getting caught up. Entrance exam.
…It was about me.
Because of the performance I pulled during the entrance exam, the academy seemed to have judged that real incidents might occur during the entrance ceremony.
As a result, what should have happened during the entrance ceremony didn’t happen.
I did it saying I wouldn’t ruin the story, but it turned out like this.
I couldn’t help but hold my forehead at how incredibly this snowball had rolled. Still, at least he was in Class A, so I guess it’s fortunate in misfortune.
“While an eager attitude is good, you should be careful from now on. I welcome such students, but many teachers dislike rudeness.”
“Ah… I’ll keep that in mind.”
Min-ho seemed to regain his composure only after cooling down. Yes. That’s the protagonist I knew.
While it turned out fine in the end, maybe I need to be more careful with my actions from now on. My small actions could twist the development more than I thought.
If I end up hindering the protagonist’s growth… ugh, how terrible.
While I’m a fan, even I didn’t think I could get away easily if I crossed him. I should prevent that preemptively.
As I was about to leave leisurely, suddenly an idea occurred to me. No, rather, what if I build a friendship with him now?
I needed to get close to him according to the plan anyway. Personally, I wanted to build some friendship with him too.
Above all, now was the perfect opportunity before students formed any groups. Soon he would be bringing storms with him.
Once he starts getting entangled with all sorts of incidents and people, the possibility of me joining in would become infinitely low. If I had to do it, now was the right time.
But… what should I say? How can I approach without causing misunderstanding or hostility?
I tried to think of what to say to Min-ho. There were many concerns. But no words came to mind cleanly.
Not only was receiving attention from someone burdensome, but showing attention to someone was also burdensome.
Then I remembered it was just the start of the semester.
Right. It’s the start of the semester. No need to progress too grandly at the start of the semester.
Exchanging names and phone numbers should be enough. Rather, trying to go beyond that might raise suspicion.
Once I made up my mind, groundless courage welled up. My mind, half-crazed with fan sentiment, not only didn’t put on the brakes but stepped on the accelerator, saying this wasn’t a bad plan.
Okay. I’m going.
“Um, excuse me! Um. Hello…?”
And as soon as I saw his expression, I became aware of reality as if being doused with cold water.
I messed up. He was looking at me with an expression wondering what kind of person I was.
I could have spoken better than that, why did I say it like…!
But, I couldn’t back down here. If I give up now, I’ll end up with the worst possible outcome that’s neither here nor there.
I forced myself to continue speaking while putting on layer after layer of thick skin. It was ugly even to me, but I had no choice.
“…What did you go inside for?”
Please. Just answer. I mustered courage to do something I’ve never done in my life. My lips trembled with shame.
I want to run away. I want to hide in a mouse hole. I want to say it’s nothing and leave naturally right now. But, I’ve come too far for that.
“Just went to ask something. More importantly, were we acquainted?”
Fortunately, instead of leaving while treating me like a crazy person, Min-ho responded while looking at me dubiously.
…God, thank you. I don’t believe in such things at all, but just this once I offered thanks.
