Chapter 42: The Female's Care
The fierce and savage beastly howl resonated through the valley, the furious howl as if about to engulf the world. Shu Jintian seemed to have dreamt of something, and his body covered in animal hide trembled faintly as his brows knitted. His forehead secreted thin sweat, and his face had no sign of blood.
Shu Jintian’s eyes were shut tight, his irises rapidly darting about under his eyelids. His mouth weakly opened and closed, as if saying something, but unable to make a sound.
The fiendish man with a wild face had a cruel and bloodthirsty smile on his face. He said a string of words Shu Jintian could not understand, raised an enormous beast and approached Shu Jintian step by step.
Shu Jintian was suddenly alarmed, his heart immediately becoming frightened. Shu Jintian struggled fearfully, but was firmly restricted by some formless force. Clearly, he wasn’t tied up, but he still couldn’t leave this place. He could only stare as the man came closer with each step.
It was as if time had slowed to forever. The wild beast walked closer with great steps. It was a tiny distance, but he seemed to be walking on forever. Shu Jintian could not avoid him, and could only watch on helplessly as the beastman walked towards him, each step appearing to stomp on his heart, and ruthlessly twisted his foot. Shu Jintian was so scared he nearly couldn’t breathe.
No matter how short the distance, he would always walk to the end. The wild beast lifted the prey with its neck dripping in blood, violently stuffing it in Shu Jintian’s mouth.
Shu Jintian couldn’t evade it and his mouth was resolutely blocked up. The fishy taste of blood immediately gushed into his mouth, the overly intense flavour causing Shu Jintian to dry heave.
“No…” Shu Jintian violently sat up in bed, and the scene before him instantly turned into his familiar cavern. Shu Jintian was stunned for a moment before he realised that he was dreaming.
Thank goodness it was just a dream, Shu Jintian gasped as if he had a new lease of life and was reborn, feeling incredibly glad.
It had been a long time since he had dreamt of such things; Shu Jintian thought he had already let it go. He never imagined that his nightmare this time was so realistic; the fear in his heart still hadn’t disappeared even until now, as if mocking him for deceiving himself.
Shu Jintian patted his chest with his hand, calming down his overly quick heart rate when he discovered the vine around his neck.
“Hanyu?” Shu Jintian was a little unhappy. Didn’t the big snake already undo his collar? Why put it on again now?”
Shu Jintian looked around, but aside from him, there was only that long-dead prey on the floor in the cave, with no sign of Hanyu’s figure.
The prey was already here, so why did the big snake go out again?
Looking at the bloodied prey on the floor, Shu Jintian suddenly recalled something and his eyes widened. The big snake had wanted him to drink blood!
Then? What happened after? Where did the big snake go? Why would he fall asleep? Why couldn’t he remember anything?
The vine was very long, enough for Shu Jintian to move around in the cavern. Shu Jintian put on the animal hide shoes Hanyu had made for him two days ago and walked to the prey to examine it.
The prey’s neck truly was bitten, dark-red blood coagulating on the wound. Shu Jintian licked his lips; there appeared to be no bloody taste in his mouth, which made him feel much more at ease.
But where did the big snake go? Why wasn’t he back even now?
Perhaps he had been affected by the nightmare, Shu Jintian was a little restless, looking at the cavern entrance from time to time and eagerly wanting to see Hanyu.
As time passed, Shu Jintian’s unease grew. His ignorance was the origin of his unease. Shu Jintian was no longer able to sit still and was about to find his dagger to cut off the vine when he heard the familiar slithering sound in the cave.
“Hanyu? You’re finally back!” Shu Jintian was delighted and eagerly turned around, his heart finally free from anxiety.
Tiantian… Hanyu’s gaze was blurry, and seeing that his female was before him, he finally relaxed. Feeling at ease, his enormous form was tottering on the verge of collapse, like an arrow at the end of its flight.
If it weren’t because he felt worried about the female being left alone at home, Shu Jintian thought that he could have slept right there.
Shu Jintian turned around happily, but the instant he saw Hanyu, the joy filling his heart instantly froze and fell straight to the freezing point.
“Hanyu? Hanyu, what’s wrong with you?” Shu Jintian rushed towards Hanyu with big steps. At first glance, he only thought that Hanyu looked exhausted and frail, as if he was about to fall over at any moment. He only realised when coming closer that Hanyu’s body was covered in injuries.
They weren’t deep, but the injuries were excessive as if he had rolled around a nail board. Especially the injuries where his lower abdomen met the ground; they were embedded with mud and rocks. Without the washing of rainwater, Hanyu’s numerous injuries suffused in white soon began to overflow with blood, and his dark-green snake body was dyed with red plum flowers.
Hanyu had returned home with his last breath. Seeing Shu Jintian, the energy he forcefully maintained relaxed and could no longer hold on, his humongous body falling to the ground with a bang.
“Big snake!” Shu Jintian cried out in alarm, shocked by the turn of events. His impression of Hanyu had always been invincible, and even monsters that could fly couldn’t beat him. Now that he saw Hanyu suddenly fall, an unprecedented panic instantly spread in his heart.
“Big snake?” Shu Jintian rested a hand on Hanyu’s ice-cold body, his voice already trembling. But there was no response; this made Shu Jintian feel even more desperate.
“Big snake? You… Why are you sleeping on the floor? It’s better to rest on the bed!” Shu Jintian’s voice was cautious, but Hanyu still did not move. Shu Jintian reached out with a trembling hand and placed it under Hanyu’s nose. Shu Jintian was so nervous he couldn’t help holding his breath, and the cavern was still for a time.
After a long time, there was a faint, cool breath brushing past his finger. It was only then Shu Jintian let out a shuddering breath and fell on the floor, limp.
“Hanyu, you scared me to death.”
Hanyu’s lower abdomen was covered in mud, covering injuries of unknown depths, and gradually turned red from blood.
Shu Jintian wanted to help Hanyu deal with his injuries, but realised he was unexpectedly weak and strengthless when he got up, his four limbs unable to resist trembling.
Shu Jintian laughed bitterly. When had he fallen so deeply?
Shu Jintian carried back the seashell that was collecting water outside, then wetted his only tattered, silk shirt, and wiped Hanyu’s body.
Hanyu was covered in blood. Though it appeared terrifying, in reality, the injuries weren’t deep. However, he had too many of such injuries and they had not been handled for such a long time, leading to too much blood loss, which was why Hanyu fainted ba!
Even if Hanyu was weakly unconscious, he still maintained his vigilance. Feeling a peculiarity, his transparent eyelids opened slightly. The female’s blurry figure was bustling around him. Hanyu had a subtle feeling, as well as an unspeakable contentment. But he had lost too much blood, and Hanyu soon closed his eyes again.
Shu Jintian tossed and turned Hanyu to wipe him down, feeling like Hanyu was now like a dead snake, and his heart was very uneasy due to this. After cleaning his body, without the strain of rainwater on Hanyu’s injuries, his blood soon stopped bleeding.
Shu Jintian began moving Hanyu to the bed. Due to Hanyu being too heavy, Shu Jintian could only first shift his tail for a short distance, then shift each section of his snake body to the bedside.
By the time Shu Jintian succeeded in his work like an old man moving a mountain, he was so tired his head was covered in sweat. He didn’t know when his body seemed to have become so weak!
Shu Jintian put Hanyu on the bed, then curled Hanyu up like how he usually wrapped around him. Shu Jintian himself was dead exhausted, and really wanted to lie down and take a break. But Hanyu had lost too much blood, and Shu Jintian wanted Hanyu to replenish his blood. Looking everywhere, he saw the prey whose neck Hanyu had previously bitten.
Shu Jintian dragged the prey up, but the prey’s blood had already coagulated. Shu Jintian did his best to lift the prey and shook it upside down, but only a few thick drops of blood fell on the ground.
Why was there no blood? Shu Jintian was doubtful. Could it be because the prey was dead for too long?
Shu Jintian couldn’t find any blood, and ultimately had no choice but to feed Hanyu the liquids from ten large bird eggs. It was nearly time for him to eat as well, but strangely, he wasn’t feeling hungry; moreover, he didn’t have that unsatisfied hunger he usually felt after having eaten like the past few days either.
Shu Jintian didn’t think too much about it, covering Hanyu in blankets before he got into bed as well. Hanyu’s body was even colder, so he was helping to warm him up with his body heat.
His sleep-loving body allowed Shu Jintian to fall asleep soon after he held the snake body. But when Shu Jintian woke up, Hanyu was still calmly sleeping like a dead snake, as if he entered hibernation.
Shu Jintian’s heart that had just rested at ease somewhat became anxious again. When he woke up, he began to inspect Hanyu’s injury and fed Hanyu food.
Hanyu was unconscious for three days and still hadn’t woken up. If it weren’t because he was still weakly breathing, Shu Jintian would really think he had already been dead. Shu Jintian fed him with the raw egg every day, and by now, he had completely finished up the eggs.
Afraid of starving Hanyu, Shu Jintian searched for his dagger, cutting away the vine that had tied him up for three days, and prepared to go out in search of food.
But Shu Jintian hadn’t taken a step out of the cave when his back turned cold, a hissing sound coming from behind.
Shu Jintian was startled, and the dagger in hand fell to the ground with a clang. Shu Jintian turned around in disbelief; the big snake that was still deep asleep a moment ago has now suddenly woken up?
Shu Jintian didn’t dare believe it and thought he was hallucinating. He only got startled when he saw that Hanyu had raised his head slightly.
“Hanyu, you’re finally awake?”
Hanyu was still conscious these days, and was very overwhelmed over the female’s care for him, and subconsciously was unwilling to wake up. Suddenly hearing a strange sound from the female, Hanyu, who was immersed in a beautiful dreamland, instantly raised his guard. He expended a great deal of effort to open his eyes only to see the female appearing to leave. His whole body stiffened, and he stared at Shu Jintian unwaveringly. As long as Shu Jintian dared to take a step out of the cave, Hanyu would violently pounce.
Shu Jintian was instantly mad with joy and ignored Hanyu’s peculiarity, darting over to Hanyu.
“You’re finally awake! Do you know how long you’ve been sleeping?” Shu Jintian originally wanted to express his joy, but once his words came out, it suddenly turned a little aggrieved. The big snake had really terrified him this time.
Shu Jintian knelt by Hanyu’s side, his eyes joyfully looking at Hanyu’s open eyes with clear and gleaming jade irises, as well as a faint mistiness, as if he was about to cry.
Hanyu immediately felt distressed and raised his snake head slightly, rubbing against the female’s leaning waist. He really wanted to hug the female and coax him, but shifting forms was too much of a burden for him right now, and he could only use his body language to comfort the female.
