Chapter 7: 7 - Watching A Tournament
The Quirked Martial Arts Fighting Tournament is an annual event in which a large number of heroes around the world test their combat skills against one another in a high-stakes, controlled environment.
Known for it's intense quirk fights, this tournament is broadcasted globally and is extremely popular, gathering immense support and funding, drawing in millions of spectators both in-person and via livestream, making it one of the most watched events in the world.
Participation in the QMA is highly selective, Heroes who make the cut are usually known for their flashier quirks, or dramatic fighting styles, which create long, and exciting fights that draw in spectators.
With the large number of applicants the organizers tend to reject heroes that aren't very entertaining, have unsuited quirks, or are controversial. As a result exceptionally skilled heroes like Eraserhead, who would turn the battle into a quirkless fight, or the former hero Lady Nagant who specializes in ranged attacks, often find themselves on the outside looking in, regardless of their overall combat ability, though those two likely wouldn't have applied regardless.
This year it's being hosted today in Japan, specifically Tokyo, and excitement is spread all throughout the city. Heroes and fans alike flocked to the city, eager to witness the event, myself and Tsuyu included, as I had won two tickets from a children's martial arts tournament I'd won 3 weeks ago.
School was finished for the day, we were sitting silently on bus, making our way over to the venue. Tsuyu was looking out the window, her eyes scanning the busy streets, while I had my eyes shut, feeling very relaxed... I think I might fall asleep.
However my gentle respite was promptly obliterated.
"Hey, Ayanokouji-kun."
My eyes that were already closed, suddenly shot back open, Tsuyu who had been silent for most of the bus ride suddenly began speaking to me.
"I'm not trying to sound rude when I ask this, but why did you choose to invite me of all people to go with you?" She asked, placing her finger on her mouth.
(edit)
I understand why she would ask that, I rarely talk to her or any of my other classmates for the few years I have been placed in the same classes. It'd be correct to call us mere acquaintances.
"i figured you might be interested. you mentioned once how you planned on being a hero."
Tsuyu had talked to me about becoming a hero, about doing it to help support her family, that she often had to babysit from the lack of income. If you could get tickets, the QMA was fairly popular for children as well, which, weirdly enough, don't need to have an adult supervising them when visiting. Nonetheless I had chosen to invite her over my fellow orphans.
"I guess that makes sense. Still, I didn't really expect to be invited by you."
"most people probably wouldn't." I replied, having nothing more to say.
The rest of the bus ride was silent, except for her occasionally stealing glances at me, neither of us were able to come with any conversation.
When the bus finally came to a stop, Tsuyu and I got up from our seats, disembarking from the bus, we stepped onto the sidewalk, where a huge crowd was greeting us.
"There's so many people, I'm no good in crowds." Tsuyu said.
"yea me too. tokyo is normally pretty crowded anyway, but this is on another level." I replied.
As we invaded the crowd, we were quickly pushed through it, and started walked together passing people of all ages and ethnicities, and we made it to the arena's entrance.
Waiting in line to hand our tickets in, I could see lots of heroes that weren't participating being asked for autograph's before they could enter, Tourists carrying camera's, hardcore fans bring all sorts of fan merchandise, banners, replica masks, jerseys, and other promotional materials.
"who are you most excited to watch fight tsuyu?" I asked, as we were getting security checked.
"The fight I'm most excited for? Uhm... for the Main Events it would be Eren Yeager vs Big Red Dot, aaaand for the Undercard, I'd go with Yoroichi vs Mundane Mann, and Gang Orca vs Minotaur Lady."
"mundane mann? who's that?" I questioned, having never heard of such a mundane person.
"Not sure, I heard he won another tournament while fighting against the Midgar Kingdoms number one hero, but nobody had managed to figure out his quirk."
"is that so, given the qma standards, he must be pretty strong."
Once we passed the security checks, and handed in our tickets, we entered cramped, high ceilinged lobby, filled with hero-themed food venders and more merchandise stands. Continuing past that, we entered the hallway that led to the arena itself, the massive posters on the walls, showcased the current match ups, the event timings, and of course all the sponsored advertisements.
Upon arriving in the seating area, the sheer size of the fighting ring was the first thing I noticed, about 3 times the standard size of an MMA ring, or 100ft. This expansive design change was crucial for managing the overwhelming power and devastation that quirks could cause.
I recognized several pro heroes serving as temporary members for the event, including Cementoss, Crust, and Recovery Girl. Their presence was essential to ensure the health and safety of both the audience and the participants.
"You said you were her for Mirko, right? Why her?"
"i met her when she was fighting a villain, she's pretty strong. i'm not sure about her opponent fubuki—they're both rookie fighters."
Tsuyu's eyes glinted in curiosity for a minute, but didn't press further, nodding as president mic begun announcing the fighters.
"HELLLLLLLOOOOO EEEEVEEERRRYYBOOOOOODYYYYYYY!!!!!!" Mic yelled, dragging out each syllable as his voice filled the packed arena.
Right as President Mic's started hyping up the audience, the lights were dimmed, and spotlights flashed across the masses, attempting to generate an atmosphere of suspense and excitement. The crowed cheered as the lights landed on the entryway, where one of the fighters began walking out.
"AAAAANNNND NOOOOOOW ENTERING THE STAGE, WE HAVE THE FEARLESS AND VERY INDEPENDANT ROOKIE, WHO IS CONSTANTLY PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF THE HERO LAW! THE RABBIT HERO: MIRKOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!"
Mirko strutted into the arena with her usual cocky grin, looking unfazed by the thousands of cheering fans. Her thighs looking as thick and powerful as they've ever been, highlighted by her sleeveless white leotard and long, straight white hair. In a single leap, she cleared over the barriers, landing directly in the center of the 100ft octagon.
"AAANNNND FAAACIIIING HER, ENTERTING THE STAGE NOW, THE YOOOUUUNGER SISTER OF THE LITTLE GIRL KNOWN AS THE TORNADO OF TERROR, A ROOKIE HERO KNOWN FOR HER RELIANCE ON HER SIDEKICKS AND INFERIORITY COMPLEX, THE BLIZZARD OF HELL: FUUUUUBUUUKIIIIIIII!!!!!"
Fubuki entered the arena more elegantly than Mirko, her curvy figure accentuated by a tight green dress and a long white fur coat. Her short, dark-green hair styled into a bob swayed as she walked, every step carefully placed like a runway model, and a very clear look of irritation stuck onto on her face.
"Seriously? That's the introduction I get?" She muttered, making no effort to hide her annoyance, as she made her way into the octagon.
The crowd screamed in anticipation, Fubuki stepped into the cage, locking eyes with Mirko, who was bouncing lightly back and forth.
"Mirko, right? You seem like the type who's all brawn and no brain. But I don't mind letting you join my blizzard group." She said confidently, striking a pose with her hand on her hip.
"I'm not joining your little fan squad, only weaklings join teams." Mirko replied, a smirk still plastered on her face.
"Suit yourself. And don't underestimate me—I may not be as strong as my elder sister, but I'll still beat your ass." Fubuki retorted, going ignored by Mirko.
We watched them bicker with eager eyes as the tension between the two fighters built.
"ARE YOU ALL REEEEAAAAAADYYYYYYYYYYYYYY FOR SOME ACTIOOOOOOOOOOON?!?!"
The audience roared in excitement, their cheers filling the air as President Mic's continued hyping up the battle. The two fighters, still eyes locked together, took their own stances.
"LET THE FIGHT BEEEEEEEGIIIIN!!!!" President mic declared as the bell rang, signaling the start of the bout.
Mirko surged forward, from the viewpoint of a regular human she was a blurred figure, quickly closing the distance between them, and launching a powerful kick at Fubuki's midsection.
Reacting on instinct, Fubuki created a green energy shield formed at an angle, that deflected Mirko's kick. The impact cracked the shield, despite Fubuki's attempt to offset the kinetic energy.
"What the hell?" Fubuki mumbled, unable to believe the sheer force behind Mirko's kick.
The green-haired girl formed a shimmering green pillar beneath her feet, propelling herself into the sky to create distance. The pillar vanished almost as quickly as it had appeared, with Fubuki deploying an energy parachute to steady herself in the air, then materializing an energy cross-bow, drawing back a dull arrow homing aimed directly at Mirko.
Fubuki wasted no time, firing a volley of arrows in rapid succession, each projectile homing pushing through the air locked onto her opponent. Mirko sprinted through the arrow barrage with remarkable agility, twisting and turning past the arrows that were homing too slowly to land a hit. She leaped into the air as Fubuki materializing wings, lifting herself higher out of Mirko's reach, continually firing arrows at her.
Mirko calculated her jump perfectly, letting an arrow graze her leg, before catapulting herself off of it—a feat that defied logic. Caught off guard by Mirko's sudden attack, Fubuki had little time to react, forming only a small shield that was promptly broken by Mirko's powerful kick.
"Luna Arc!" Mirko shouted, destroying the energy barrier.
"Kmph!"
Fubuki felt a jolt of pain as Mirko's kick connected with her shoulder, sending her plummeting toward the earth. In a desperate move, she summoned an energy slide just before impact, which sent her soaring back into the sky.
(shit gif)
The injury throbbed, making it difficult for Fubuki to focus, but she couldn't let Mirko take advantage of that. She changed her tactics, still floating in the air, she charged her crossbow with a homing bola—a projectile formed of two weighted spheres connected by a energy tether.
The arrow-bola shot forward, spiraling through the air, and to Fubuki's relief it wrapped around Mirko's legs, momentarily hindering her movement as she landed on the ground. However, the energy bola quickly broke apart, unable to restrain Mirko's leg strength.
The Blizzard of hell remained at a distance, recognizing that charging in would of been a deadly mistake. Instead she swapped weapons again, manifesting a spiked capture net to buy herself more time. She shot in with the crossbow, the strands extended outward, but Mirko easy dodged to the side.
Fubuki was clearly getting nervous, frantically pulling out every tactic or weapon she could think up, trying to gain the upper hand. The pressure of the fight was gaining on her.
"OOOOOOH LOOKS LIKE FUBUKI MIGHT BE ALL OUTTA OPTIONS, IS THIS THE BEST SHE'S GOT?!" President Mic's voice boomed, he seemed to have some sort of dislike for the Tornado sisters.
She summoned an energy whip next, pulling her arm back, she lashed the whip with all her might. To the audience's shock, Mirko deliberately allowed it land, feeling the sting as it wrapped around her.
Fubuki froze in confusion, as Mirko yanked on the whip, pulling her opponent closer. Failing to properly respond to her opponents strategic trade, Mirko broke through the small barrier Fubuki put up, and kicked her harshly in the chest.
"Too slow!" Mirko exclaimed, as her kick landed.
"AAAAAND DOWN SHE GOES! HOW MUCH MORE CAN SHE TAKE, FOLKS?"
Her blow sent Fubuki crashing down to the ground, no slide to catch her fall this time, she laid limp of the floor, gasping for air.
The crowd erupted into a frenzy, the energy in the arena doubling as Fubuki struggled to stand up, her determination to win still showing. Mirko stood over her, a confident grin plastered over her face, she glanced over at the referee waiting for him to call it, but he kept watching.
Fubuki managed to push herself up on shaky, gathering all her strength she put up another fighting stance. Mirko, who had gotten bored of the fight, sent another kick at Fubuki, throwing her 10ft back, and watched as she struggled to get back up.
Mirko slowly walked over, raising her leg up high for another axe kick.
(edit)
Just as she was about to break through Fubuki's barrier, the referee rushed in, stopping the match, and declaring victory for Mirko.
"WHAT A FINISH! EVERYBODY GIVE IT UP FOR MIRKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
The noise in the stadium was deafening, whistles were cutting through the air, and fans were shouting her name. The Rabbit Hero walked triumphantly off the stage, soaking it all with her cocky grin, her victory was completely undisputed.
I rose from my seat, pushing my hands into my pockets as I slipped past the people in my row. Tsuyu looked over at me, curious on where I was going, and I answered before she could ask.
"washroom." I said.
I continued, not waiting for her response, navigating through the packed arena. The loud cheers and whistles faded behind me as I followed the path towards the exit.
Once I was out in the hallway, the noise was mostly muffled, being blocked out by soft music. I kept walking, the brightly colored posters lined the walls blurring together as my mind drifted.
Eventually, I stopped and glanced around. I had walked further than I didn't recognize where in the arena I was, the corridors felt unfamiliar.
I think.
I might be lost.

Ch 7 End.
This chapter was supposed to be longer, but I knew If i added the 2nd half it wouldn't come out for a few more days, so I just uploaded it as it was already chapter length anyway.
Also adding in random events, cuz I really doubt the UA sports festival would actually be as popular as they claim it to be, and I wanted to improve my fighting writing skills.
do point any inconsistences or grammatical errors as I didn't have time to reread it today thanks.
