Chapter 5: 5 - Quirk Awakening
The villain found himself on the defensive, all of his attacks useless against someone as slippery as Edgeshot, his breathing became labored, he knew he couldn't win in a battle of attrition. In desperation, he scanned the area for anything he could use, our eyes locking to each other.
He changed tactics from a defensive strategy, to a hostage strategy, sprinting towards me with a feral grin on his face.
At that moment I froze.
My vision blurring.
My head trembled uncontrollably, heart racing wildly.
Cold sweats slipping down my cheek

This feeling.
Is it???
Fea---
"The fuck? Ya just randomly started bleeding?"
Don't ruin my immersion.
He grabbed my arm with immense strength, raising me into the air like a ragdoll, and moving me in front of him to block Edgeshot from advancing. I could feel my arm throbbing from the pain.
"Edgeshot was it? The name's Hósen and I have no problem admitting yer more than I can handle." Hósen said.
"aaaaaaahh, help me edgeshot-san, i'm scared." I screamed for help.
"W-what..?" Uttered the hero.
Edgeshot stopped about 10 feet away from me and Hósen, confusion evident on his and Hósen's face.
"Hosen did you do that to the kid?" Edgeshot's voice was low, clearly wary.
He kept silent for a moment.
"Not Yet. But I'll snap this kids arm like a twig if you don't back off and do what I say."
"What do you want?" Edgeshot said, narrowing his eyes.
"Simple. You're going to let me walk away with the cash my goons collected, you can keep their bodies, no tricks, no backup, I'll let this kid go afterwards." Hósen sneered.
"You don't want to do that Hosen, hurting a kid will just make it worse for you."
"As If, we both know I'm in for life if I get caught anyway,"
With one hand still lifting me into air, Hósen tightened his grip, the pressure in his hold was growing, threatening to squeeze the life out of my arm; probably intending to make me scream out in pain.

"I'll give you 3 seconds, fuck off, or I'm breaking this brats arm." He said, fully intent on following through.
The villain had no intention of surrendering, and Edgeshot knew it, but he wasn't going to back down either as there was no guarantee he'd let me go after this.
"Think about it Hosen, you're just making things worse for yourself."
"One." He counted.
"You're not going to get away Hosen, Let him go now and maybe we can talk about a deal."
"Two."
___
I had got a call about a villain with a speed quirk described to be fast enough to outmaneuver the rising hero Edgeshot, who was currently holding a child as a hostage as a means to escape.
Sprinting towards the area where it was last reported, I swung myself up onto the rooftops, navigating the city at a speed much faster than running on the ground. The height gave me a clear view of the streets below, and a few minutes later I spotted a crowd gathered.
"Alright, fin--"
"Three!" He interrupted.
The villain wasn't in my sights when he screamed, but the unmistakable sound of a bone breaking was loud enough to be heard throughout the street—likely the kid had something broken.
Immediately as I spotted him, I disabled his quirk and launched my capture scarf and wrapped it around his arm, which Edgeshot took advantage of incapacitating the villain with a thin strike to the neck.
"Damn it." I cursed under my breath.
The street was silent, except for the quiet whimpers of the child. People gathered recording the incident from a distance showing no concern for the child's privacy,
I sped over to where the child was sitting to check his condition.
"You're a tough kid. Stay still for me." I said, crouching down to his level.
Ignoring the dried blood coming from his eyes and his uninterested face, his emotional state appears... normal, his heartrate is also normal... He doesn't seem to be in a state of shock, but he hasn't reacted to me touching him, that's a bit weird for a child.
"you are a hero right? Mr... Homeless man-san?" He said in a monotone voice.
What? Homeless? This brat.
"I am, are you feeling alright kid?"
"other than my broken arm and the minor case head and eye pain, I feel fine, nothing too bad."
Minor case of head and eye pain?
"by the way, what's your hero name."
"It's Eraserhead. We're taking you to get help now, okay? You're going to be fine, you are already handling it like a pro." I replied
Ugh, I'm no good at dealing with children, and this one's got a weird personality too. He looks about 5 or 6 years old and speaks rather maturely for his age, in a calm tone. It might be too early to judge anything, but his monotone voice and uncaring face are giving me the creeps.
"you know."
He paused, looking over at Edgeshot who walked over to us with guilt written on his face.
"This was lame for my first time."
"What?" I asked, confused on what he was talking about.
"well, It's my first time being a hostage, and i could see next to nothing for the entirety of it. kind of ruins the whole experience, don't you think?"
I exchanged glances with Edgeshot, who was equally as perplexed by this kid's thought process.
"There is no 'experience' in being a hostage kid, just focus on staying alive."
"yes, yes, i got it old man, no need for the lecture, just help me up will you?" He said, out of character.

That's his broken arm...
Man, this toddler is a freak.
The emergency responders arrived shortly after and did some basic health checks on him. I watched as he remained expressionless while they inspected his broken arm, before putting him on a stretcher, and wheeling him off into the ambulance.
I gave one final look at the strange kid, wondering what exactly was going on in his life to be acting like that.
___
After the whole hostage situation I was sent to the hospital for my broken arm and internal bleeding from my head—which I was sure was because of my quirk awakening.
The doctors said my arm would heal in a month, not a big problem, my vision/head issue turned out to be far more significant.
I couldn't tell before as my I was basically blind during the incident, but my eyes had actually adapted to be able to see permanently what I never believed existed - souls.
Souls are sort of like the 'true' form of a living being, where all living things have souls; humans, animals, and even plants, despite most of them not being sentient. It shows the true feelings of a person, similar to mind reading but instead of reading their thoughts, I see their real emotions on their soul's facial expressions. Since the soul is essentially your true self, it would also stop any transformations, disguises, or facades from tricking me. It isn't a physical entity either, so I can look or move through the it to spot and fix internal damage, or see hints of a quirk.
My ability doesn't only let me see souls, I can manipulate them. By manipulation, I'm able to shapeshift or morph mine or others soul in any way I like as long as it isn't creating new material.
The body and soul and linked together for most people, naturally meaning changing the soul would effect the body as well, allowing me to change any living composition for good through touch.
Over the past two year I've become more soul than body, I can, by removing the souls from the body, take over other living things, or forcefully share a body, and my getting my head or heart destroyed wouldn't result in my death. This doesn't mean that I'm un-killable or self-sustainable, I can still die and my body needs sustenance to not turn rotten.
If I make any changes to my body and stop using my quirk, it no longer reverts to it's regular state, as the new form would become the regular form, simply put, my body has become just a vessel for my soul.
Moving on from my quirk.
I don't know what exactly I plan to do with my life.
That place is gone, my father is gone, all the issues from my previous life have disappeared, because they don't exist anymore. Along with it the life I was being raised for disappeared too, I had no issue with becoming a politician, yet it's not something I'd go for now.
I don't know what I'm going to do in the future, I've spent the last six years doing basically whatever I wanted and could do in this body.
I could become a hero, I suppose. My quirk is extremely versatile and powerful enough, the idea doesn't excite me; maybe it's worth trying though? After all, isn't that what most people with strong quirks end up doing?
On the other hand I could live quietly, enroll into a normal high-school and university, find a normal job, start a normal family, live a normal life. It's not like anyone's looking for me anymore, It wouldn't be a bad option.
I have plenty of time to think about that later.
I'm currently walking with Honaka towards my new school, Salty Banks Elementary, It feels a bit strange to be going an elementary school at my age. I haven't even stepped on school grounds, yet I can already sense the overwhelming amount of energy these children have.
When my quirk manifested, I gradually found myself becoming more isolated at the orphanage. I wasn't exactly excluded from the 'quirkless losers' group, but things because awkward and I slowly distanced myself from the group. From what Honaka learned while signing me up, most of the children already knew each other during preschool and kindergarten, I might be destined to be a loner forever.
Stopping at the front gates of the school, It's predictably much smaller than the size of ANHS, even smaller than what I'd expect an elementary school to be.
(edit)
Honaka assuming I was nervous, lightly pushes my back, encouraging me to go in
"There's no need to be nervous Kiyo-Chan~, I'm sure you'll love hanging out with the other children." She said.
I nod quickly, continuing forward while gazing at children playing on the playground, and entering through the front office, Honaka went to talk to the receptionist.
Shortly after, the receptionist waved us in for orientation, I trudged along, hand in hand with Honaka into the packed gymnasium, waiting in silence for the thing to start.
I don't like the entrance ceremony, a lot of first graders think the same way.
The principal and the other teachers explained why orientation was rescheduled for the same day as the entrance ceremony and other stuff no one cares about, there's too much standing, and it's a pain in a butt because there are too many troublesome things.
The entrance ceremony for the elementary, middle, and high school marks the start of one major trial for students.
For the first few days after the ceremony, students must make friends in order to enjoy the rest of their school life.
Should someone fails at this task, it is said that a miserable school life awaits them.
Based on my usual strategy of avoiding trouble, it would probably make sense to make friends and maintain surface-level relationships.
I would have chosen that path in high school, but frankly, maintaining friendships with children seems like more trouble than it's worth.
Technically the quirkless group I was a former member of were all children as well, although the youngest, excluding myself, was a few years older than me.
Perhaps I'll just wait until high school and reinvent myself.
The ceremony ended, Honaka left, and I was transitioned to the classroom. The classroom had 30 desks, with 3 rows placed together in pairs. I was placed on the third row on the right by the door, middle right desk.
In the seat paired with mine was girl with large hands, long dark green hair tied up like a bow at the bottom, and a face similar to a frog. I sat down next to her without introducing myself, ignoring her obvious staring,
(edit)
"Alright kiddos! Welcome to your new classroom! I'm going to be your teacher this year, my name's Asahino Nazuno, you can just call me Asahino-sensei
"Alright kiddos! Welcome to your new classroom! I'm going to be your teacher this year, my name's Asahino Nazuno, you can just call me Asahino-sensei. I'm so excited to meet each and everyone of you, are you all excited too?!"
"Yeah!" A majority of the class said simultaneously.
"Great! Most of you might know each other already from kindergarten, But for those who don't why don't we all introduce ourselves? I want to know all your wonderful names, and if you have a quirk, you can share that too! Who's ready to go first?" She said, moving around animatedly.
One by one, the children eagerly introduced themselves. Some kids spoke loudly, while others shyly mentioned their quirks. Most were uninteresting, but there was some girl with blue eyes and long pink hair who had a quirk that let her steal items that are only under 10,000 yen, a weird quirk. And another with red eyes, short brown hair, who claimed he had all might's quirk, he refused to show it though, claiming to be in rehab due to an injury.
Eventually the girl next to me was asked to introduce herself.
"Hi, I'm Tsuyu Asui, ribbit, my quirk, as you can probably guess lets me do anything a frog can do." She said, sitting down quickly.
Her quirk was rather self explanatory so no one in the room felt the need to ask her any questions, after that most of the class glanced at my direction waiting for my introduction with curious eyes.
"hello. my name is ayanokouji kiyotaka and um... i guess i can see souls."
I sat down as quickly as I stood up, not elaborating on my glowing eyes that supposedly could see souls.
"If you don't mind me asking Kiyotaka-san, what do souls look like?" Asahino asked seemingly more interested than any of the children.
"uh... they look like people but um... err... see-through."
"Wow really! Is that why your eyes glow? That's so cool!"
Judging from her face, it appears like Asahino has come to the conclusion that I see the souls of dead people, and she's decided not to inquire further. As long as she's doesn't ask me to talk to her dead relatives, I don't have any reason to clarify.
Tsuyu blinked her large cartoonish eyes, looking at me quietly for some reason. She's doesn't seem nervous and isn't as energetic as the other children, a result of her quirk maybe?
"Does that mean you can see dead people?" She asked, loudly enough for everyone else to hear.
"Not really, I can only see the souls of living people, so like any disguises or transformations don't work on me." I replied, causing most people to lose interest.
I guess she's saved me the trouble.
The introductions continued on with me only partly listening to the rest of the students talking.
After the last student introduced herself, we started off the day, with the typical first grade activities, learning basic hiragana and some extremely basic kanji, mixing in some writing and reading activities into them. Following the lessons, we were given free playtime, some students ending up playing up with building blocks, coloring pages, or reading picture books.
Time went by fairly slowly, recess and lunch passed, and the lessons continued while I struggled to pay attention to any of them. The final bell rang, breaking the monotony of the day, I packed my things in silence, watching as the rest of the class excitedly hurried out.
The first day was over. Simple and uneventful.

Ch 5 End
This would be my favorite chapter so far of this fanfiction, although I did have some trouble writing for it, specifically the quirk took a while to decide on and it's not the perfect quirk, but I liked it the most and it seemed like the funniest to write, which was I choose it.
not much else to say.
Do point out any inconsistences or grammatical errors thanks.
