Chapter 55: Avatar?
POV Haru
I peeked out from behind the boulder I hid behind, watching the firebending soldiers do their daily drills trying to memorize each movement that they made. Another thirty minutes of observation was enough, and I slowly made my way out of the area, through the backroads of the town.
An hour later I was outside the walls of the town and in a sort of basin surrounded by hills hiding me from view.

I had not tried to climb the tower much, my focus had been on the quest to become the avatar, at first, I tried learning the elements on my own but that only really worked for earth. Weather by luck or perseverance about a month ago I had accidently airbended, I never even meant to I had spent the whole day trying to bend the other elements and by the end of the day I was so tired I wasn't even thinking about it just making random movements.
Breathing in then out I thrust out my open palm, and air came forth not much though more like a weak breeze. Trying a few more times it only produced the same result.
"Alright, let's try fire now"
Settling into a crude version of the stance I had observed I punched out my fist. Nothing happened. Again and again, I tried producing any fire that I could, even the smallest flame would do.
"This isn't working" I said frustrated, I slammed my foot into the ground causing some earth to dislodge itself. Getting into a horse stand I began practicing some earth bending moments, causing some stones to hit a makeshift target about ten yards from me.
"Alright let's table that for now"
Trying to clear my head I started to slowly bring my hands back then quickly pushing them forward. Yet again only a small amount of air was produced.
"This is insane, why can't I do this? I know I can bend the elements but why wont it let me"
"What did you just say boy" I heard.
Hearing the unfamiliar voice I quickly turned towards its source, standing a bit away was an old balding man with grey hair dressed in watertribe clothing.
"I asked what you just said"
Turning I started to run away but a tendril of water twisted around my leg tripping me. Rolling onto my back I kicked the ground with my other foot causing some earth to rise and break the tendril of water. While standing back up I threw some earth at the man but he just weaved around it. In desperation I thrust an open palm at him with my fingers facing the ground. A gust of air stronger than before came out knocking the man back a single step.
"You just airbended" he satiated eyes wide.
"Leave me alone" I started turning to leave but a spear of ice pierced the ground next to me.
"Wait"
Turning back the man approached me, while turning the ice to water and storing it in a large pouch on his side.
"What do you want"
"What do I want?" he asked confused "You are the avatar"
"No, I am not" I denied despite having just airbended.
"I saw you bend both earth and air there is no denying it. Though you are younger than what I expected, the previous avatar must have passed on." he started "But then next in the cycle would be water which means that avatar would have died as a child"
"I am not the avatar"
"What did I just say about denying it?"
"What I mean is that I am not; thee; avatar. I received a quest while in the tower"
"A quest. Explain"
And so, I did, detailing the exact wording of the quest as well as the reward that it offered.
[Quest: The Tower's Avatar]
[The Tower itself has sensed your strong spiritual connection, as the tower becomes more connected to your world it desires to imitate it. You have been offered the chance to become an Avatar for the tower. Your goal is to learn the basics of every elemental bending as soon as possible]
[Rewards: Class change to Avatar]
After I was done, he asked.
"So, you aren't the avatar the world is looking for"
"No, I am not"
"And you just received the quest as soon as you entered the tower?"
"Yes, I received the quest then"
"Let me think" he said then gave me a hard look "Do try not to run again, I will catch you"
"Who are you?"
"I am Pakku, a waterbender from the northern watertribe. Now please let me think"
I watched as he stroked his thin mustache as he paced around the area. Using my bending I brought up a small part of the earth to sit down on. I watched him pace for another thirty minutes before he stopped and stared at me.
"What elements can you currently bend?" he asked.
"Just earth and air, though not very well" I explained.
Letting out an exacerbated sigh he said "You may not be the avatar the world is looking for but you are the only one we have right now"
"What do you mean"
"What I mean is that I am going to train you"
"Train me, you know airbending?"
Dropping his head into his hand he said "No, I am a master waterbender, we will have to go to a air temple for you to learn airbending"
"But airbenders are extinct?" I questioned.
Dropping his head into his hands again he said "Yes but their temples still might have a few scrolls, and even if they don't their wall carvings should have something to get you started"
"But what about the tower? Shouldn't we be climbing it to get stronger"
"Right now, you are useless, if you learn the elements, it will just allow you to climb the tower that much faster plus we don't know what kind of abilities will come from your class change"
"So, what should we do"
"Right now, I am going to take you back to the watertribe area of gilded spire, then in the morning we will start your waterbending training. For the other elements I will need to contact a few friends, they should be able to teach you the other elements better than I can"
"The quest only mentions learning the basics, shouldn't we focus on that first for each element?"
Pakku passed for a second at that opening and closing his mouth multiple times as he tried to say something.
"With another avatar I would say no, but in this instance, you are actually correct. New plan I will teach you waterbending while we wait for my friends to either arrive or send a scroll so that we can get the basics of each element down"
"Alright, do you mind if I get something to eat first?"
"I will have something prepared once we are back in the watertribe's area. Follow me"
Then Pakku started to walk back towards Gilded Spire with me close on his tail trying to keep up with his surprisingly quick pace.
