Chapter 22: Monsters
The rocky coastline stretched beneath a brooding sky, where jagged cliffs met the restless sea. A chill wind whispered through the sparse vegetation, carrying the scent of salt and stone. Mounted on sleek ostrich horses, two figures cloaked in loose, hooded Earth Kingdom robes surveyed the rugged terrain. Azula, her piercing golden eyes barely concealed beneath her hood, sat with an air of regal confidence. Beside her, Kaiya's posture was tense, her gaze fixed on the horizon as waves crashed against the distant shore.
Azula glanced sideways at Kaiya, a sly smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "You've been awfully quiet this entire time," she mused, her voice cutting through the sound of the wind. "I suppose commanding that colonial town required you to do certain... things. Things you weren't quite prepared for."
Kaiya remained silent, her expression unreadable. Azula chuckled softly. "I did warn you, yet you accepted without hesitation. So you'd better not falter now."
Breaking her silence, Kaiya replied firmly, "I'm not faltering, master. I will enact the Fire Lord's will."
Azula giggled, a melodic yet unsettling sound. "Oh, I'm just teasing you. I know this isn't what you want to be doing. That whole 'enacting the Fire Lord's will' persona is just a facade." She leaned in slightly, her eyes gleaming. "I know you well, Kaiya. But I trust you on this mission because I know what you desire, and it will be given to you."
Kaiya gave a subtle nod, the weight of unspoken thoughts passing between them. She saw no reason to maintain the facade any longer. Azula understood that Kaiya's motivations were not rooted in patriotism but in a transactional pursuit—her service in exchange for a sanctuary where she could push the limits of her firebending on her own terms.
Azula's gaze shifted to a narrow passage carved between towering cliffs—a natural choke point. "There it is," she noted, pointing to the exit of the crossing that the Earth Kingdom rebel forces would soon use.
They dismounted, tying their ostrich horses behind a cluster of boulders hidden from sight. The two moved with stealth toward the passage's exit. One side opened to the vast expanse of the sea, waves lapping against the rocks below. The other side was a steep canyon wall, perfect for an ambush from above.
Azula surveyed the terrain with satisfaction. The shadows played across her sharp features as she turned to Kaiya. "This will be ideal. Attack as I trained you."
Kaiya met her gaze and nodded confidently. Without another word, Azula began her ascent up the steep rocky hill, her movements fluid and swift. From her vantage point, she spotted the approaching soldiers—a long, narrow formation winding through the passage. Earthbenders clad in traditional green armor guarded the front and rear, while the middle was filled with rough-looking men clutching farm tools and crude weapons—likely conscripted non-benders.
Crouched behind jagged rocks, Azula and Kaiya waited with patient intensity as the passage filled with men. The air was thick with the scent of earth and impending conflict. The murmur of the soldiers' conversations echoed faintly off the canyon walls.
When the rebels were mere meters from Kaiya's concealed position at the exit, Azula decided it was time. She moved with silent precision, ensuring her footsteps made no sound against the rocky surface. Drawing in a focused breath, she summoned lightning—azure sparks dancing between her fingertips. With a swift, calculated motion, she unleashed a devastating bolt toward the passage's entrance. The searing lightning struck with explosive force, obliterating the earthbenders at the rear and collapsing the rocks behind them. Dust and debris filled the air, cutting off any chance of retreat.
Shouts of alarm erupted from the soldiers. One man pointed upward, his voice edged with panic. "Up there!"
Azula smirked, her eyes reflecting the chaotic scene below. She knew Kaiya would now initiate the next phase of their attack.
Seizing the moment, Kaiya stepped out from behind her cover. The rebels, their backs still turned, remained unaware of the imminent threat. Flames flickered to life at the tips of her outstretched fingers, casting an eerie glow on her stoic face. With a fluid motion, she unleashed a torrent of fire down the narrow passage. The intense heat surged forward, a roaring inferno that consumed everything in its path. The earthbenders at the front stood no chance—engulfed instantly along with over half of the non-benders.
The narrow passage transformed into a hellish corridor. The acrid smell of burning flesh filled the air as agonized screams pierced the chaos. Flames licked up the canyon walls, and smoke billowed upward, darkening the already overcast sky. The soldiers' silhouettes twisted and contorted within the blaze, a haunting tableau of destruction.
Kaiya stood amidst the devastation, her expression cold and unflinching. The searing heat distorted the air around her, yet she appeared untouched by the flames. She began to walk forward, each step deliberate, the fires parting as if bowing to her presence. The tumultuous sounds of battle seemed distant to her, muffled by her detachment.
Panic seized the remaining rebels. Desperation drove them to ready their spears, hurling them with all their might toward Kaiya. She did not flinch, her gaze unwavering. Suddenly, from above, Azula descended with grace, intercepting the spears mid-air. Her flaming blue kicks shattered the wooden shafts, splinters scattering like confetti. Landing lightly in front of Kaiya, she wore a knowing smirk.
Refusing to relent, the rebels launched another volley. Azula moved like a dancer, her martial prowess combined with blue fire creating a mesmerizing defense. Each spear was met with a burst of flame or a swift strike, reduced to ashes before it could find its mark. She protected Kaiya without a word, aware of her protégé's lack of defensive skills.
Azula then ignited a circle of blue fire around them, the flames casting an ethereal light on both their faces. She stepped back, allowing Kaiya to confront the remaining non-benders who stood on the other side of the azure barrier.
Kaiya raised one hand toward the blue flames at her feet, the other extending toward the trembling soldiers. With practiced control, she manipulated the heat, drawing it through herself and converting it into a thick, suffocating black smoke. The inky cloud rolled toward the rebels, engulfing them. Coughing and choking, they clutched at their throats, eyes wide with terror.
Trapped between the collapsed passage and the advancing smoke, some tried to scale the steep canyon walls. Their efforts were futile. Azula picked them off effortlessly, hurling precise fireballs that struck with deadly accuracy. One by one, they fell—plunging back into the abyss or crumpling where they stood.
Facing annihilation, the remaining soldiers made a desperate choice. They leaped from the ledge into the tumultuous waters below, the sea offering a slim chance at survival.
Kaiya and Azula approached the edge, gazing down at the scattering figures struggling against the waves. The wind whipped at their robes, the scent of smoke and salt intermingling.
Without hesitation, Azula began to generate lightning once more. Kaiya turned her head slightly, observing Azula's technique up close for the first time. The precision, the raw power—it was both mesmerizing and formidable. With a sharp exhale, Azula released the lightning into the water. The bolt cracked through the air, a blinding flash followed by a thunderous boom. The surface of the sea erupted in a burst of energy, and the men below convulsed before falling still, lifeless bodies drifting on the currents.
Azula surveyed the scene with a satisfied expression. "Well, this went flawlessly," she declared, her tone matter-of-fact.
Kaiya's attention shifted to a movement at the base of the canyon wall. A man, his body marred by severe burns, had somehow survived. He sat slumped against the rock face, his breaths shallow and ragged.
They descended toward him, their footsteps echoing in the sudden quiet. The man's eyes widened with fear as they approached. "I surrender," he whispered hoarsely, his voice barely audible. "Please... mercy."
Kaiya regarded him impassively. She understood all too well that Azula had no intention of granting mercy, and there was nothing to be gained by intervening. This was a part of the path she had chosen.
Azula tilted her head thoughtfully. "Tell me, Kaiya," she began, her voice smooth as silk. "What do you think would terrify the Earth Kingdom more? Knowing two mere teenage girls wiped this battalion out... or, having no one left to tell them what happened at all?"
Kaiya met her gaze but remained silent. The answer was evident.
Azula stepped closer, her body lightly brushing against Kaiya's back. The warmth of the contact was unsettling, too intimate for the moment. One hand slipped down to grasp Kaiya's waist, firm but calm. Then, without warning, Azula's lips grazed the side of Kaiya's neck—a brief kiss that caught her off guard, more shocking than the sight of the wounded man ahead.
Kaiya tensed, her breath catching as Azula's fingers wrapped around her wrist, guiding her hand forward. Azula's head hovered close, her breath warm against Kaiya's ear.
"Do it," Azula whispered, her voice steady, almost soothing.
Kaiya hesitated, not from the command itself, but from the strange, unnerving way it was delivered. The closeness, the touch—it made everything feel far more twisted.
Kaiya locked eyes with the soldier, offering him the small dignity of facing his end head-on. She spread her fingers, summoning a stream of fire that erupted from her palm. The flames engulfed the man, the intense light casting stark shadows across the canyon walls. The roar of the fire drowned out his final cries. Reflections of orange and yellow danced across Azula's face, her eyes alight with twisted satisfaction. Kaiya's expression remained distant, her gaze vacant—as if her mind were elsewhere, detached from the grim reality before her.
As the flames subsided, Azula turned away, a contented smile playing on her lips. "Enjoying the real world?" she inquired, a hint of mockery in her tone.
Kaiya watched the smoldering remains, the weight of her actions settling heavily upon her. She had asked for this—the moment she accepted Fire Lord Ozai's offer to train under Azula without hesitation, she had set herself on this path. She desired her firebending sanctuary, a place to hone her skills without restraint. She had admitted her willingness to bend her morals, and now Azula ensured she upheld that choice.
She followed Azula toward the exit of the narrow passage, the echoes of their footsteps the only sound in the aftermath of destruction. The sky above began to clear, shafts of sunlight piercing through the clouds as if nature itself sought to cleanse the darkness of their deeds.
Kaiya cast one last glance over her shoulder at the charred landscape and the still waters below. There was no turning back now. She could only hope that her end of the bargain would be fulfilled—that her sacrifices would not be in vain. The path ahead was uncertain, but she steeled herself, matching her pace to Azula's as they disappeared into the labyrinth of rocky terrain, leaving the haunting silence in their wake.
