Chapter 2: Wasted
The evening sun bathed the distant ocean in a fiery glow, casting a haze of orange and gold over the vast waters that seemed to stretch on endlessly, merging with the horizon. Mikasa and Eren stood side by side, their eyes brimming with tears, gazing at Armin, who stood before them.
"See, Eren... I told you the sea existed..." Armin whispered, holding a seashell in his hand, his smile beaming with the innocent joy of their shared childhood dreams.
His voice wavered, but he tried to stay strong as he looked at both of them filled with raw tears. "Hey... You two, stop crying," he said, suddenly pulling them both into a tight embrace.
"It was my choice... Don't blame yourselves. I was meant to die, Eren... And Erwin was meant to live... I guess that's just how things are." He paused, his smile fading as his body began to disintegrate into ashes, dissolving into the wind. "Live a long happy life you two...."
Both Mikasa and Eren were left speechless, their hearts shattered as Armin vanished before their eyes, disappearing into the dust.

"Eren! Eren! Wake up!!" Jean's frantic voice echoed through the district, shaking Eren from his dream. His eyes shot open, his face damp with tears. His head throbbed, still healing from the injury, steam rising from the wound as his body recovered.
Beside him, Connie was gently shaking Mikasa awake. She, too, had been crying in her sleep, her hand tightly clutching Eren's shirt, since she received the similar dream— A farewell by their childhood friend.
"Armin! Where's Armin?!" Eren shouted, his hands shooting out to grab Jean by the collar, his eyes wild with fear and desperation.
"Calm down, Eren!" Jean urged, holding his hands up in an attempt to soothe his frantic friend.
"I don't have time to calm down!" Eren snapped, his voice hoarse with panic. "I need to save Armin! Where is everyone? I can still revive him... I have a plan!" His voice cracked as he spoke, his gaze darting around in frantic disbelief.
Mikasa stirred beside him, her tear-streaked face matching Eren's, her red, swollen eyes showing the devastation she shared.
Jean's expression darkened, his shoulders sagging under the weight of what he had to say. "Eren..." He spoke softly, his voice thick with sorrow. "I'm sorry, but Armin... He didn't make it. We just buried him... in the graveyard of Wall Maria."
The words hit Eren like a blade to the heart. The dam of emotions he'd been holding back broke all at once as he stumbled to his feet, refusing to accept it. "Sh... Shut up! It's not... It's not possible!"
Connie, who had been standing nearby, lowered his gaze, unable to meet Eren's eyes. "We... Jean and I tried to convince them to use some of the serum on Armin. We thought maybe if we turned him into a pure Titan, and later found a Titan shifter, we could bring him back... But before we could do anything..." Connie's voice cracked, his hands trembling as he tried to finish. "Armin... He was already gone... His body went limp and cold.... Hange told us he might've died while we were arguing for the inheriter of the colossal titan...."
Eren's knees buckled, and he collapsed, overwhelmed by the crushing weight of reality. "There's no way… This can't be happening…"
Eren's voice broke, his words barely more than a whisper. It all felt like a crushing nightmare, one he desperately wished to wake from—but no matter how hard he tried, it was too real, too painful.
Beside him, Mikasa sat hunched over, tears overflowing and eyes clenched shut as she sobbed into her hands. The grief of their shared dream, where Armin had bid them farewell, was almost too much to bear.
"If only… if only there was a way… I would've given anything, even my life, to bring him back. But… I'm just so useless…" Eren muttered, his tears soaking into the dusty stone beneath them, his voice hollow with despair.
"Don't… don't say that..." Mikasa's voice cracked, soft but firm as she pulled Eren close, wrapping her arms around him in a tight embrace, her head resting on his shoulder.
Her tears seeped into his shirt as she clung to him, desperate for some form of comfort in their shared pain. Eren's arms instinctively encircled her, holding her close as their grief intertwined.
"Don't ever say those words again,… I can lose anyone… but I can't… I can't lose Eren…" Mikasa whispered through her sobs, her grip tightening as if afraid he might slip away too. Her shoulders shook with each breath, her voice breaking with raw emotion.
Eren swallowed hard, guilt and sorrow weighing heavily on him. "Kay… Sorry," he whispered back, his voice barely audible as he held her tighter— she was the only one left he could take care of... The realization cost him his friend.
For a long while, they stayed that way, neither speaking, simply finding solace in each other's presence. The weight of their loss hung over them like a dark cloud, but in that moment, their shared grief was the only thing keeping them grounded.
Unbeknownst to them, the scouts had discovered something that would change everything—the truth about humanity's history, the war between Marley and Eldia, the true worth of the Founding Titan that now coursed through Eren, and the terrifying secret of the Wall Titans. A storm was coming, and soon, nothing would be the same.
