~~~Third Person, date? Date? Place?~~~
"Boom!"
The sound of a tree being knocked down was heard in the middle of the forest, the resounding noise scared away the birds perched on the tops of the branches of the nearby trees, while a small cloud of dust and dirt rose as the huge cut tree fell to the ground.
Near the place where the tree fell, there was a small campfire. A group of eleven people, four men, five women, and two children, a boy and a girl, were sitting on wooden logs.
"It's about time, almost a whole day cutting down a single tree!" The girl in the group scoffed, joined by laughter from the other members sitting by the campfire. "And why didn't you help me then, Yennefer? We would have been done with this long ago and we would have been home by now." The man responded with an angry tone, but the smile on his face indicated he was joking.
"That's right brother, and I quote; <>" the girl finished, mimicking her brother's voice as she said the last part. That made her brother laugh, who walked over to his sister all sweaty and started rubbing his arms on Yennefer's arms, "Noo, gross, stop it!"
"Enough games," the somewhat grumpy voice made them stop, which made them look at the owner of the voice, a tall, strong, and somewhat advanced man, his hair already white with gray hair, "we have four hours of light left, we still have to cut the boards and take them to the village, so hurry up."
"Yes. Father," they all replied in unison.
All those gathered around the campfire were the sons of the gray-haired man, who was the leader of the village to which they belonged, today they were cutting down trees to make new fences for the cattle since the one in the village was already in the process of being destroyed by water and the passage of time.
"We don't want to meet some zombie or a ghost, hahaha", Yennefer's joke did not produce joy in the group, and they just looked at her with serious faces "What humorless people".
Fortunately, the bad time was forgotten the moment they started to cut the big tree into small parts so they could store them in the trunks and take the logs back to the village. Familiarity and the old routine made finishing the job quick and smooth, causing them to take no more than an hour to get everything done.
"Okay, it's all ready, gather your things, and let's go" Thomas, their father commented, looking up and looking at the position of the sun, reading how many hours of daylight they had left, "okay", Yennefer also replied, taking a bucket of water and pouring it on the campfire, proceeding to put it out.
"Sis, did you have any cookies left?" The other boy in the group, about ten years old and Yennefer's twin, asked hopefully for a snack before setting out on the walk back to the village, "I don't think I have any, but I have an apple, would you like some?"
The boy nodded, "it's not what I wanted, but it's okay," he said to Yennefer, as a loud, booming sound rang out from the distance, causing the quiet to break and frowns to appear on the faces of the older members of the group.
"HOWL!" several wolf howls were heard in the distance, causing the previously quiet group to become impatient and grab their weapons. "Calm down, grab the trunks, and let's get out of here, we can't face wolves in the forest," Thomas said, providing reassurance to the group amid the crisis.
His sons didn't need to hear him twice to do as he said, and hurriedly packed up and stowed everything on the run in their trunks, then started heading for the village.
In the presence of fierce wolves in the forest, no one could face such beasts, except the gamblers, those people who appeared from time to time from the woods and whom the forest beasts did not harm, or if they did, they had weapons or armor to protect them.
They were well-liked in the villages, as they offered unique items or even offered weapons to the village for a night's sleep, and sometimes even fought side by side with the villagers in case of a Pillager invasion.
But they were simple villagers, their weapons were made of iron, and without potions or medicine, they wouldn't stand a chance against a pack of wolves, because they were never alone.
But luck was not on their side that day, for the howling could be heard getting closer and closer, and at the rate they were going, they would not make it to the village. "Pick up the pace, boys, we'll rest in the village, just run!" Thomas gave them strength and motivation every time he saw his tired sons.
But in his mind their guilt and responsibility crushed him, there were supposed to be no wolves in that part of the forest, that's why they had gone to cut down trees in that location, but things had to get worse, and tired from their day's work, they were easy prey for a pack of wolves, especially having two children like Yennefer and Peter.
"Ahh," a woman fell to the ground tangled in some vines, causing her to hit hard as she fell, seeing this, one of her brothers stopped and went back to help her up, but just at that precise moment, black jaws closed over his shoulder.
"Stuart!" Thomas cried out in alarm at the name of his eldest son as he saw him attacked by one of the wolves, who managed to catch up with them. Thomas grabbed your axe and swung it at the back of the wolf, which was nearly six feet tall, driving his axe into the animal's flesh and causing the wolf to let go of Stuart.
But Thomas was too old for that, and couldn't react in time when another wolf charged him from behind, causing him to crash to the ground, with the wolf on top of him. "Run!" Thomas managed to say just before the wolf bit his neck and killed him.
This posed a horrible image for his children, seeing their father being killed in front of their eyes, especially the two youngest, both of whom cried out in fear and pain. "Take Yennefer and Peter, and go, we'll stop them!" Gaunt, the one whom the wolf had bitten, ordered his sister whom he had gone to help lift, commanding her to leave with her other sisters, while the brothers stayed long enough for them to escape.
With no time to disagree, Fabiola stood up and grabbed each of her younger siblings' hands, then began to run, followed by her other four sisters.
They quickly left the forest, reaching the clearing and seeing the village from the top of the mountain they were on, which made them hurry their pace, with the almost palpable certainty, as for their siblings, at this point they should already be dead, they had no chance of facing a pack of wolves in the forest, but at least they hoped that their sacrifices would be enough for them to arrive safe and sound to the village. Where the others could fight the wolves.
But the beasts did not want to lose their prey, and against all odds, the wolves managed to reach them, the attack was relentless, if even their brothers could not defend themselves, they could not, and the result was as expected, with no power to defend themselves against bloodthirsty beasts, one by one they fell.
Amid all the commotion, Stella pushed her two younger siblings into a small quarry, hoping to keep them safe from attack, watching them fall, only to be bitten by one of the wolves.
.
Yennefer awoke with a severe cough, having wounds on her back and dried blood on the back of her head. Memories of all of the above haunted her, bringing tears to her eyes. Remembering her brother, she tried to find him in the dark, but without moonlight or any flashlight, the task was nearly impossible, or at least until she stumbled over something on the ground.
After feeling around, she realized it was her brother, but he wouldn't move, no matter how hard she tried to wake him up. In the middle of the night, knowing that there could be zombies or some dark creature, she understood that they could not stay the night in the quarry, they had to leave and run to the village, where they would be safe.
And so it was, against all odds, not caring that her hands were scraped, and her knees and feet hurt, she carried her brother on her back and started climbing with the help of the overhanging rocks, she managed to get out just in time before the first lightning struck and the heavy rain came. Which would have made getting out of the quarry impossible due to the wetness.
Already outside, she got a better look at her brother's appearance, and the sight perplexed her, "Nooooo!" A cry broke out the moment she saw her brother... Her little brother, while she had been largely unharmed in the fall, her brother was not.
There was a large wound on his forehead, with that part of his head crushed and brain matter protruding from his nostrils and right eye... Her brother had died the moment he fell.
Yennefer fell in despair, remaining on her knees as she held her little brother's body against her chest, with immense pain in her chest and a lump forming in her throat.
The rain intensified, lightning lit up the sky, and suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck her. The electric shock, which should have killed her, transformed her, turned her into something else. Her torn clothes were changed into a purple robe, a large dark hat appeared on her head, and her face... Her face was no longer that of a child.
With dark, brittle scars on her face, black eyes, and pale skin, Yennefer went from being a child to a witch, unable to do anything to stop it, becoming unconscious.
When she awoke, she found herself being dragged into the middle of the forest on top of a sled, with the treetops passing in her vision without letting in the sun's rays, watching, she could see how a woman... No, a witch, was carrying the sled.
"I see you woke up, it's about time," the witch greeted Yennefer, with a cruel smile due to her terrifying appearance, but her eyes gave off a look charged with affection and nobility, 'where are we?' Yennefer asked confused, " In the jungle biome, in minutes we will be in the swamp biome, your new home."
"What, no, I already have a home, I have to get back," Yennefer went into a crisis, getting up from the sled in a hurry but falling into the river. There, she stood static, not understanding her new physique, "You can't go back, you're a witch now if you go back, those you called family will murder you, or worse, you'll end up murdering them in self-defense, now your home is this, the swamp biome, a secluded place where you can grow and learn."
"But... I," Yennefer wailed, but try as she might, she could not cry, "there is no time for regrets anymore, this is a cruel world, you must become strong, leave your past behind, and we will start with your name, forget about it, create a new one."
Yennefer looked up at the witch. Even with the deformed and terrifying face, it seemed normal to her, which made her bite her lip. Nothing was going to be normal for her anymore, not anymore. "My mother, my mother was named Valka. I... I want to use her name."
Yennefer, now Valka, said to the witch, which made the witch smile, "Well then it's a pleasure Valka, my name is Mikaela, and I will teach you how to survive in this world."
