Chapter 7: 7. The Aria IV
Kriemhild and Brunnhilde didn't tell Siegfried about Brunnhilde's pregnancy as they didn't wish to burden him and wanted him to take his last breath with a bit of happiness.
" Sieg?" Kriemhild called out but received no response in return and she tearfully raised her gaze to see his peaceful face. Kriemhild had a miserable smile on her face as she stood on tiptoes to land a chaste kiss on his lips.
Kriemhild suddenly noticed Brunnhild going towards the sword that was stuck behind Siegfried. She confusedly called out to her.
"Brunn?"
Brunnhild turned towards her with a smile as tears flowed down from her face. She held Siegfried's sword in her arms.
" Kriem, you should know what my fate is now that Siegfried is no longer here to protect me "
She was sure King Gunther would force her to marry him, she couldn't forget his lustful gaze. Even when she was Siegfried's wife she still saw how he defiled her body with his filthy gaze.
She was sure King Gunther was more excited about the fact that she was Siegfried's wife and he might get a sense of satisfaction in defiling her. Her honour was the most valuable thing to her along with her heart and she was unwilling to lose them but she had already lost her heart and now she was in threat of losing her honour too.
She went towards Kriemhilde and hugged her tightly while tears rolled down both women's faces.
" I'll go accompany our husband, don't be jealous that I went to him first okay~ " Brunnhilde said in a joking tone as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
Kriemhild also smiled at her sadly and she stepped back from Siegfried who was just standing there motionless with a peaceful smile on his face...
.....
Brunnhilde had Siegfried in her lap as she gazed at his peaceful face with an affectionate look.
'Soon'
She leaned down to press her lips against his forehead and hugged his head while there was an incision on her wrist from which blood poured out.
"Forgive me, my child, Mother is selfish, she can't live without your father" Brunnhilde rubbed her stomach as tears poured out of her face.
It really hurt.....it hurt her heart to do this. She was not only taking her own life but the life of her and her husband's child. This was the crystallization of their love together.
Brunnhilde sobbed softly while hugging Siegfried while her tears flowed down her face. Slowly her consciousness became blurry as she drifted off into eternal sleep together with her husband...
.....
Kriemhild watched the flames dancing in front of her with a cold face.
She was the only one here watching the flaming ship going farther and farther away. From this point onwards her once happy family was no more.
Not a single person came to visit them and the kingdom went on as if nothing had happened.
This was naked humiliation and provocation to the honour of her husband, the Hero of the nation died but none of the high-ranking members of the kingdom nor the royalty came to pay their respects.
Rage was boiling inside of her, this rage prevented her from joining her husband and Brunnhilde.
Other than her one more person was aware of her husband's weakness. Kriemhild gripped Balmung tighter as tears of rage and sorrow flowed out of her eyes.
The price of betrayal will be paid in blood...
...
WHY!
Why was this happening?
Wasn't everything supposed to be better? Then why did this have to happen?
Siegfried felt himself in darkness as he couldn't move or speak, he could only roar inside his mind to the unfairness.
How naive he was, to think his death would solve anything, it just pushed those who were close to him towards the abyss.
When he closed his eyes he expected to be in darkness's embrace or the afterlife but he was instead greeted with visions of his wives.
He had to watch as Brunnhild took her life while she was pregnant with their unborn child. He could only scream hysterically in his mind as he watched his wife commit suicide in front of his eyes.
But the torture didn't end there as he had to watch his Kriemhild descend into madness for his sake. He had to watch as she did anything and everything possible to avenge him even if it meant slaughtering innocents.
He had to watch as his wife was driven insane and finally slain by a blade from the back.
At the end of it all Siegfried just wished it would all end, his mind was broken as he blamed himself for being a self-righteous fool.
It was his fault they all died if only he wasn't self-absorbed in his moronic ideals and dreams to be a 'Hero'.
What was so great about being a hero? Protecting the happiness of others at the expense of your own. Giving up everything including your life and that of your loved ones for the salvation of others, was it worth it?
A True 'Hero' doesn't exist as one person's hero is another person's devil. In the eyes of the people he killed he was a 'Monster' but in the eyes of those he saved he was a 'Hero'.
Thus True salvation does not exist, he cannot make everyone in the world happy.
His ideals, his dreams and his morals he failed to keep all three of them but still retained this foolish obsession of being a 'Hero', and what did it cost him?
Everything!
Was it worth it?
He didn't know, he didn't want to, he just wanted to close his eyes and never wake up again.
Let the life of this sinner come to an end.
Siegfried felt his consciousness fading as he apologised to his wives one last time for being in their lives , as his mere presence had cursed them....
