Aria Of The Cursed Dragon

Chapter 5: 5. The Aria II

" Haah ...Haah... " Siegfried was panting heavily as he gazed at the corpses around him.

Corpses of both allies and enemies. Or were they even allies?

Siegfried could feel his body weakening, as he clutched his trusted sword Balmung tighter as he stood atop the small hill that was overlooking a large grassland. This place was situated near the border and was chosen as the place for the peace treaty due to it being an open land and the difficulty of setting up ambushes.

Ambushes might be difficult, but what about betrayal?

Siegfried was betrayed, he let down his guard. He didn't expect to be attacked by an ally, that too in his vulnerable spot.

Siegfried's body didn't have any wounds and he looked to be in perfect condition except for the gashing purple wound on his shoulder. He was poisoned, that too a deadly one.

He could see a small army rushing over towards him from all sides. It seems they were hell-bent on burying him here.

Siegfried felt the sting of betrayal as only two people in this world other than him knew what his weakness was, his wife would never betray him. He couldn't even bring his thoughts to think of her that way.

So there was only one possibility, the person he considered his friend betrayed him. Not only his friend but the Kingdom itself seemed to have betrayed him.

They didn't send him here to negotiate a peace treaty but as a sacrifice.

It seems the kingdom has become weary of his strength and wants to get rid of him despite all he has done.

And they had used such a cruel way to get rid of him, and the betrayal stung. He understood that he had no other option than to fight, and the poison was gradually weakening his strength and the enemies had surrounded him from all sides so an escape was impossible.

Even if he could escape, he wouldn't , because if he escaped this army would surely invade the nearby villages situated at the border committing all kinds of atrocities. And the kingdom itself wouldn't pay much heed to these small losses.

To them, some commoners dying won't matter much but he can't in good conscience let that happen. He may just be a butcher and executioner but his essence as a hero will always remain.

' Forgive me '

Siegfried gripped his sword tighter as his Balmung lit up with holy energy and green runes lit up around his body. He squatted a little causing the earth beneath his feet to crack as his leg muscles tensed up and in a split second he vanished.

*Boom!*

There was only one option from the start.....

...

*Boom*

Hearing the loud noise and the small smoke cloud formed on the hill in front of them, Laurent couldn't help but tighten the hold over his weapon. He was the commander appointed by the Kingdom of Latvia together with other neighbouring kingdoms of Burgundy.

Normally he wouldn't have agreed to take part in this suicidal mission against that 'monster' but it seems that Burgundy itself seemed to want to get rid of their hero.

How laughable, after the hound lost its value and became a little too strong he was abandoned by his master and plotted by his own people.

But to Laurent, this was a piece of happy news as if he was able to claim the head of the Hero of Burgundy, the beast who was seen as an executioner by many, then his name would be immortalized in the legends of Latvia.

*Boom*

"Aaaaargh! "

" M-Monster! "

" A-Ah P-Please-"

" No! "

Laurent was brought out of his thoughts by a sudden crashing sound, he could not see anything due to the dust cloud but he could hear the screams of terror and agony.

He felt as if a basin of cold water was dumped on him as all his fiery thoughts and blazing ambition were snuffed out.

He didn't wish for any glory, right now his only thought was to escape. His instincts were screaming at him to run but he couldn't because if he escaped then his whole family would be executed for treason.

From the moment he and all the other soldiers were selected they only had one fate, Slay this terrifying monster or die trying.

He wondered if all of them together could do something against 'him' and the most cruel joke of them all was the fact that he was poisoned.

He was not even at his best, and he could already feel the terror from his soldiers, he himself was shaking .... so he couldn't blame them for this as facing something like this they were powerless.

The Legends and rumours didn't even do justice to this monster, hearing the constant shouts and screams of agony and terror, Laurent felt a pit forming in the base of his stomach.

He understood one thing ..... This was never a battle he could win he was just one more corpse on the tally of this beast...

...

Laurent felt they couldn't give up like that so he was going to give commands to the mages but his thoughts were suddenly interrupted

' Huh? Why is everything upside down?'

But Laurent would never get the answer to that question...
