Chapter 70
As the mana that seeped into my blood spread throughout my body, my senses began to sharpen, transcending the realm of humanity. With every contraction and expansion of my pupils, my vision narrowed and widened in turn.
Crack!
The bone that was healing broke apart once again, and the regeneration process repeated itself. The muscle fibers that had been gradually recovering were no exception.
Suddenly, I realized that the surrounding time felt infinitely slowed down.
A refreshing breeze gently caressed my cheeks. Long strands of golden hair flowed gracefully, interspersed with drops of red blood.
I could move my arms and legs. There was no longer any pain. Yet the reason I remained still was the mana swirling in from around me.
Even as my body shed its human form, I no longer felt fear.
What I felt was a profoundly immense sense of liberation. It was as if all the shackles that had bound my body were falling away.
Power surged throughout me. The omnipotence enveloping my form felt like pure ecstasy.
The sensation of mana intensified, expanding beyond mere introspection into my surroundings. As my senses extended beyond the flowing tufts of my golden hair, they expanded like a breeze.
The faint sounds of tiny insects buzzed as clearly as if they were right in my ears. The expansion of my senses did not stop there. Riding along the flowing mana, I began to perceive the movements of a giant creature.
The moment my senses, which had been stretching endlessly, ceased to expand, a small ripple spread like a droplet falling onto a still surface.
Whee, heeek!
The first sound I heard was that of a human woman’s voice. She was panting heavily, filled with endless fear.
Chasing after the rapidly moving woman was a giant creature. As I focused my mind on it, the hazy outline began to sharpen.
What was revealed was a tremendously large monkey.
Covered in fur, it unleashed a massive rage, smashing everything around it.
‘King.’
The moment I recalled the name of the monster, the swirling consciousness that had been drifting like clouds quickly settled, and my hazy vision began to clear.
I blinked and checked my condition. My elongated nails felt sturdier than before, and the horn growing from my head had grown about an inch longer.
These changes were not vastly different from before, but the next part was the issue. Beneath my larger and sharper nails, red scales had begun to grow.
The scales, feeling firm to the touch, showed no intention of coming off even when scratched by my nails.
I expected there would be other changes, but I had no way to confirm them right now. And there was no time.
I dashed straight towards the giant tree. There were no suitable handholds or places to step, but that didn’t matter to me.
As my body rose, I reached out to grasp the tree before crashing down.
The sharply grown nails easily dug into the wood, allowing me to hang on. An unwavering sense of stability. I secured my body against the tree solely with my fingers and nails.
In that state, I used the tree as a springboard and leaped upwards. Although it was not a powerful kick, my body shot up at an incredible speed.
As my ascent began to slow, I kicked off another tree and leaped again. This time, I put in more effort, and my flying speed increased even further.
Diving through the tangle of trees, I passed many thickets. Finally, I arrived at the campsite where I had been before I fell.
My body, suspended in the air, landed quietly. Though I touched the ground, my landing made no sound.
The traces of the campsite scattered on the ground and the lingering scents of mana vaguely hinted at the positions of my teammates.
Furrowing my brow, I sprinted forward. After a brief run-up, my body soared at an incredibly fast speed.
Only after passing through countless bushes and branches, was I able to land in front of the white giant.
With ragged breaths, the giant’s shoulders heaved. I stared intently at the person that King was holding.
In King’s grasp was a familiar woman, slumped and unconscious.
“Noel…”
From her faint breathing, it seemed she was not dead yet. At that moment, as if responding to my call, King turned around.
Its bright yellow eyes met mine in the air.
As I looked into King’s eyes, I recognized yet another change in myself.
My pupils had transformed.
The pupils, elongated vertically, could no longer be called human, resembling those of many monsters instead.
There was no surprise. This was the scenario I had expected.
Kiieeek!
King, who had been glaring at me, let out a fierce roar and swung its fist toward me. Just a moment ago, I had been smashed by this very fist, my body crumbling down among the trees.
As I watched the incoming fist, I thought about why I had to get hit by such a slow punch.
With a light motion, I dove forward, and the gigantic fist barely grazed my head, like a piece of paper. I easily avoided the following tail attack as well.
King, still holding Noel, seemed to find it a hindrance, letting out a fierce roar as he tossed her aside.
With both hands free, King launched a series of punches at me. Each heavy punch created a thunderous sound upon impact with the air, and each blow that struck the thick branches crumbled the ground beneath me.
Even as several attacks rained down, King failed to touch a single hair on my body.
Kiieeek!
Was it anger that I wasn’t getting hit? The King was now tearing down the enormous branch serving as the ground beneath it and swinging it like a weapon.
While I called it a branch, in reality, the branch was not much different in thickness from any standard tree. In fact, it was probably thicker, so calling it a log would not be unreasonable as King wielded it.
Whoooosh—!
My body, having lightened as if flying through the sky, suddenly came to a stop. I watched as the enormous log approached me.
I simply extended my hand toward it.
My sharp nails, along with the red scales beneath them, sparkled as they contained mana.
Thud—!
A heavy impact resonated as the log collided with my palm. However, that shock merely dispersed without shaking my body.
Kiiee…?
King stared at me with an expression full of bewilderment.
I looked up at it, letting out a long breath.
Fwoosh—
My breath mixed with a wave of heated flames. I had anticipated this from seeing the red scales, but it seemed the mana of Kalbain was indeed what had the most significant effect on my transformation.
Kiieeek!
King let out a rough roar. Denying that it was being pushed back by someone much smaller than itself, it frantically swung the log in its grasp.
I remained unmoving. Standing my ground, I reached out and took on all its attacks. King’s heavy punches were powerful, but they could not penetrate the mana barrier enveloping my body.
When it seemed like King’s relentless assault would persist forever, I drew my sword and stepped forward.
Focusing my senses on the sword’s tip, the surroundings began to melt away. The trees that surrounded us vanished, and the cool breeze disappeared without a trace. Ultimately, what remained was just me and the giant monkey, King.
Kiiee—!
A sound that only I could hear filled the empty world. Instantly, the mana within me ignited into flames, racing toward the sword in my hand.
Fwoosh—!
As the moment red flames surged upwards, seven burning stars soared above the blade, shedding faint starlight.
Swoosh—!
As the seven stars that sparkled in the air vanished, King’s right shoulder was severed, and the world that had disappeared began to return.
Kiieeek!
Thud—!
As the severed arm fell to the ground, King screamed in agony. It brushed its remaining left arm against its right shoulder, and instead of red blood, black ash poured down.
It was just as I was about to swing my sword again.
Lifting my sword high, I stared blankly at my hand. The red scales that had once only covered my fingertips now enveloped the whole back of my hand.
At that moment, King turned to flee. Black ash swirled around, enveloping my vision. I knew I should immediately chase after it to end it, but I did not.
Kiiee—!
Watching the fleeing figure, I began to spin the mana circle within my heart rapidly. The flames beginning in my heart intensified, spreading throughout my body, as the heat began to gather in one spot.
Even the mana barrier protecting my body began to dwindle, drawing in every last bit of mana within me. Without a shred of excess, perfectly.
The gathered mana condensed, igniting a scorching heat. A hot breath escaped, pouring down with certain destruction the moment it was released, causing the surrounding plants to wither and dry up from the heat.
“Hoo—”
As I took a deep breath while looking at King, a faint memory resurfaced. The memory of soaring freely above the world, melting everything with the hot flames I spewed from my mouth.
When the gigantic figure descended to earth like a mountain, hot lava surged forth, causing those who witnessed it to tremble in fear, repeating its name over and over.
Kalbain!
The hazy memories woven into the mana flowed toward me, transcending time. The moment the memory of the dragon that spewed forth the flames of destruction was etched into my mind.
I took a step forward, releasing the heated flames within me.
Craaaash—!
The uncompressed flames surged outward, as if seeking to engulf everything. However, as I slightly reduced the size of my mouth, the flames condensed, transforming into a thin beam of light.
What had once been red flames turned into a yellow beam, the yellow beam into white light, and the white light evoked a pale blue hue.
The line so thin it couldn’t be seen devoured everything in its path and rushed toward the hastily retreating white giant.
