Chapter 55
The clash between the crimson wave and the gray wave was instantaneous.
The gray orcs were outnumbered, but the leading knight orc displayed overwhelming might and began to carve a path through the enemy.
Just when it seemed that the immense power would cause the red orcs to crumble—
A shaman orc with crimson skin, watching the battle from afar, opened a thick book.
As the ominous mana flowed and undulated from it, it was undoubtedly a magic book.
[tsoga!]
The moment the incantation flowed from the lips of the shaman orc, the ominous mana that enveloped the battlefield began to stir.
As the wave-like mana spread across the ground soaked in orcish blood, a troop of pure white skeletons began to show themselves.
The number of skeletons summoned with a single spell was in the hundreds.
The gray orcs could be felt panicking at the emergence of this new foe.
Although the knight orc swung a sword wrapped in lightning and felled enemies, he alone could not handle the sheer number.
Bolstered by the support of the skeletons, the red orcs began to push back the gray orcs.
Red blood enveloped the battlefield like a hazy fog, and behind that, screams and shouts erupted.
Just when it seemed that the gray orcs were being forced back, new orcs poured out from within Greenfall city.
Among those orcs were faces I recognized.
“Whoaah!”
Agul surged out from the throng of orcs.
With a massive axe in hand, he roared loudly.
Not just him; a handful of human adventurers had also mixed in with the orcs to join the battle.
All that flickered in their eyes was a pure desire to survive.
Witnessing this scene, I had no choice but to charge out of the city with my Nightmare.
If we stayed like this, everyone would be annihilated. Contributing my meager power to turn this war into a victory was the only choice I had to survive.
Kiiing-!
I spun a mana circle above the quickly galloping Nightmare. After sufficient rest, my physical condition had improved, and my depleted mana was now restored.
The starlight mana enveloped my sword in my right hand, while I scattered blue lightning with my left.
Kraaaang-!
The lightning that flew towards the red orcs created a chain reaction, spreading outwards.
Close combat was dangerous in this situation. I circled the outskirts as much as possible, occasionally dealing with orcs that charged at me alone.
The stench of blood that blanketed the battlefield was so foul it threatened to numb my sense of smell, and the dust that rose mixed with the orc’s spilled blood clouded my vision.
“Haaah!”
If I didn’t kill, I would be killed. Keeping that simple thought in mind, I swung my sword mechanically.
Even when red blood smeared my face, I felt so dulled that I couldn’t even react to it.
As time passed, my body became heavier. The stars drawn to the enemy lost their light, and even the sharpness contained within them diminished.
Plooosh-!
Even the Nightmare began to tire as time flowed on. Its formerly sleek body was marked with numerous wounds, and its once glossy mane was now matted with blood.
I panted and surveyed the battlefield. When we first clashed, the end of the war had seemed far away, but it now began to look like it might be in sight.
The endless wave of white skeletons had vanished, and the gray orcs were significantly pushing back the red orcs.
Just as I let out a sigh of relief, a great laugh rang out from a very distant spot.
-ke ha ha ha ha!
The owner of the laughter was the shaman orc with crimson skin.
I hadn’t noticed when he had climbed atop the city gate, his hands raised high.
His robe flapped fiercely as if hit by a fierce storm, and the staff in his right hand radiated ominous light.
And finally, the magic book held in his left hand was slightly hovering in the air, its pages flipping.
-ts-oga!!! drako-ne!!!
While I blankly stared at the orc shaman, he slammed the staff he held towards the massive skull that decorated the city gate.
Kuuung-!
With a tremendous sound, the ominous mana that had enveloped the battlefield began to move.
As if all the mana in this world coalesced into one, all the mana spread throughout the area began to fly towards the orc shaman’s staff.
Go go go go-
In an instant, the gathered ominous mana vibrated the atmosphere, and the eyes of the massive skull that adorned the gate ignited with fire.
Those ominously blazing eyes were filled with maddening malice.
The moment the dragon’s skull was ignited, pure white bones began to fly in from all directions.
Unlike the complete dragon’s bones, the bones that began to assemble below were those of various monsters that could easily be found in the vicinity and also bones of orcs that had died in the war.
Clang clang clang-!
As dozens of types of bones intertwined in one place, they soon began to transform into the massive neck bone of a dragon.
It took no time at all for a dragon made of pure white bones to form. From the elongated neck bone to the spine, and from the spine to the tail.
The moment arms and legs were completed, riblike wing bones unfolded behind it.
At that very moment, Greenfall began to crumble. Its hefty legs trampled buildings, and its long, trailing tail swept away the debris like waves.
[Kiieeeek!]
The roar that erupted as the wings spread contained the very essence of monsters.
Although it had been resurrected in an unstable form, a vast sense of dread enveloped me, asserting that it was still a dragon.
I could think of nothing.
Both friend and foe began to slump down as if their legs lost strength.
And that included me and Nightmare.
The Nightmare, which always stood firm, now bowed its head in fear, letting out harsh breaths.
However, amongst the overwhelming dread of the bone dragon, there were those who stood their ground.
An orc knight clad in full plate.
He held his lightning-wrapped sword and gazed at his city.
The heat blazed upon his gray skin, and with excitement surging, he slowly moved his greatly bulging upper body muscles and aimed at his bone dragon.
Then he shouted.
“Whoa!”
A rough roar that seemed to shake the brain.
The moment the roar pierced my ears, I was freed from the dragon’s dread.
I wasn’t the only one who benefitted from the orc knight.
Everyone within a certain distance from him began to rise from their spots.
At that moment, the bone dragon and the orc knight began to charge at one another.
The bone dragon, its frail wings outspread yet unable to fly, was likely due to its unstable resurrection.
Even more, every time it moved, bone fragments would fall off with a clatter.
[kha!!!]
The orc shaman roared harshly above the bone dragon’s head.
The reason he wasn’t using other spells was likely because all of his strength was dedicated to controlling that enormous bone dragon.
I galloped atop the now-resurrected Nightmare. Although the enemy appeared overwhelmingly massive and despairing, I judged that if it was in an unstable state, it was worth a shot.
And it seemed that hundreds of orcs shared this thought, charging at the bone dragon.
Among them was Agul, wielding his gigantic axe.
The first to clash with the bone dragon was the orc knight.
He swung his storm-wrapped sword and leaped toward the dragon’s head.
His muscular thighs, puffed to the point of bursting, sent him soaring, but he couldn’t reach the dragon’s head positioned even higher.
Crash-!
The strike from the orc knight shattered the bone dragon’s ribs.
The moment the blade made contact, a storm burst forth, scattering white bones in all directions.
Ignoring the collapsing ribs, the bone dragon swung its forelimb.
It seemed that the being, which had already faced death, felt no pain.
Guuuuu-!
The foreleg attack, sweeping down onto the orcs, leveled dozens of them.
But the orcs did not relent. They began to throw themselves into battle, following their leader who wielded his sword.
Massive greatswords, axes, and even hammers struck at the bone dragon’s frame. Had it been a full dragon’s skeleton, it might have held firm, but given that it was constructed from bones easily obtainable nearby, cracks began to appear in the body of the bone dragon.
Bam! Bam!
However, the orcs’ attacks were pathetically weak. Unless it was the orc knight’s attack, there were few capable of doing real damage to the bone dragon’s body.
As the bone dragon’s legs began to move again, dozens of orcs were swept away.
I distanced myself atop my Nightmare.
Chain lightning or magic missiles wouldn’t break that immense bone.
Neither would my swordsmanship suffice.
It was time to strike with a powerful, very strong blow.
The moment I realized that, the mana circle began to spin rapidly.
Cold starlight in my left hand, hot blazing flame in my right.
The moment the two opposing energies revealed themselves clearly, I drew both my hands together.
Kugwaaanng-!
The moment my hands met, the opposing energies pushed against each other, creating a raw storm.
At that moment, as if sensing the flow of mana, the shaman orc glared at me.
The instant our gazes met, the massive bone dragon’s tail lashed out like a whip.
Kwaaaang-!
It was an attack that seemed to crush everything that blocked its path, but the Nightmare quickly leaped over the attack.
The Nightmare did not stop running. It charged fiercely, pounding the ground and leading me into a prime position.
When the mana I could gather reached its limit.
I stretched my hands towards the orc shaman.
Kwaaaang!
The two mana extending from my hands surged together, unleashing a raging storm.
“Ugh…!”
There was no way my exhausted body could withstand the backlash of the storm.
As the push of the storm erupted, I and the Nightmare slammed into the ground.
But my gaze remained fixed on the bone dragon.
The unleashed storm pulverized everything that stood in its way and continued onward.
The right wing bone of the bone dragon was sucked into the storm, crumpling, then the right foreleg also followed.
With immense bones being ground away, white shards of bone scattered into the sky.
Only then did the ravenous storm, which had greedily devoured the bones, begin to disperse.
I frowned and bit my lip.
The result of pouring out all my mana had finally torn off one of the bone dragon’s arms and wings, but it hadn’t reached the shaman orc, who was my initial target.
The shaman orc’s fixed gaze began to focus upon me.
As he moved his lips, incomprehensible words flowed out, and the collapsed body of the bone dragon began to restore itself.
At that moment, despair washed over me, when the orc knight leaped silently and swung his sword.
That strike was akin to the calm before a storm, and as the lightning-wrapped sword brushed past the orc shaman’s body, a tremendous thunder erupted.
Kraaaang!
The shaman orc, likely the source of the predicament, was sliced apart and fell to the ground.
As the mana wrapped around him began to scatter, it clearly indicated he had met his death.
However, the cheers of victory did not rise.
“Hah…”
I let out a dazed sigh.
The body of the orc shaman, which had fallen to the ground, began to rise into the air.
And not just any part—the left half still clutching the magic book.
I frowned as I looked at the orc knight. He knelt on the ground, panting heavily.
The light from the lightning-wrapped sword had dimmed, indicating that he had exhausted all his strength with that last strike.
It was unlikely to count on him for another attack.
At that moment, my eyes caught sight of various objects scattered on the ground.
Amidst a pouch filled with jerky, my gaze fell on various storybooks.
As I toppled over, items from my bag had tumbled out.
I reached out toward an object wedged between the stacks of books.
Creak-
The chilling cold of the metal chains wrapped around my hand, and from amidst the books, a magic book exuding ominous mana floated up.
The magic book soared directly towards me and, at the same time, its pages flipped rapidly.
Flap flap flap-
The paragraph that halted before my eyes displayed a familiar word.
Had it asked if I needed power?
Recalling an old memory, I faintly smiled.
Now was indeed the time I needed power.
Although I feared the cost I would owe to the book’s master, it couldn’t be worse than death.
“Skasha.”
The moment I uttered the name, a peculiar shape appeared above the magic book.
It was a very strange creature, neither human nor beast.
[Do you wish for power?]
“If I want it…?”
[I’ll give as much as you desire.]
“And the price?”
The moment a light glimmered in the beast’s eyes, its mouth opened.
[Come to the edge of the north.]
It meant to find the Grimshade Kingdom, a land of the dead.
The moment I nodded slightly, ominous mana began to flow into my body through the magic book.
The murky purplish mana was chilling and repulsive.
However, for now, this would suffice. I began to conjure one spell using the ominous mana flowing into me.
Mana flowed abundantly. What was needed now was a massive spell with overwhelming destructive power and wide range.
A small star rose in my inner world. That star, absorbing the malevolent mana, began to radiate a murky light.
A spell using the demon lord’s power; there’s no spell that suits this situation better.
“He who is darker than twilight, he who is redder than the flow of blood…”
Muttering softly, I rose to my feet. The purplish mana began to spread throughout my whole body, bringing vitality back to my exhausted form.
“I swear here to the shadows…”
As the shape of the incantation formed, a magical system that had never existed in this world emerged, and fierce storms began to rage.
The orc shaman, clutching the magic book in his hands, began to mumble.
However, the incantation spilling from my lips pushed towards the finale.
“You and I shall unite to bring forth great destruction…”
The moment I completed the final stage of the incantation and reached out my hand, a spell created to annihilate dragons manifested here and now.
The mana extending from my hand enveloped the entire area.
Kwaaaaang-!
