Chapter 23
The woman who passed me the bronze badge stared at it for a long while.
I added that if she found it hard to believe, I could demonstrate my abilities.
“Ah, no. It’s not that I don’t believe you. I’m just a little surprised… Looks like you’ve been training to be a knight since you were young?”
“Um…”
I nodded at her words. While I wasn’t sure if the gatekeeper was actually a knight, it was clear I had trained under someone similar.
The woman laughed lightly at my answer and returned the rank badge to me.
“Alright. Both of you have passed.”
Saying this, the woman introduced herself.
“Nice to meet you. My name is Luna.”
After introducing herself, Luna rummaged through her pocket and handed me a small piece of paper.
On that paper was a detailed list of items that would likely be needed for our dungeon exploration.
The male adventurer glanced at it briefly before stuffing it into his pocket, but I carefully examined the list.
From basic adventurer essentials like bottles of flammable oil, ropes, and flint to strange items like dried red deer antler powder and plump mushroom spore powder, the list was comprehensive.
“Do we have to gather everything on this list?”
I asked while showing her the paper, and Luna shook her head with a light smile.
“No, not at all. It’s just a list of items I thought might be necessary. What do you think? Sounds alright, doesn’t it?”
I shifted my gaze to the male adventurer standing next to me, curious about what he thought of the list, as he seemed more experienced than I.
“What do you think?”
“Um… It’s quite thorough?”
He said this while lightly laughing. Judging by his tone, it didn’t seem like he thought all of these items were necessary.
I bid farewell to Luna with the man and exited the inn.
The man then walked away alone, seeming uninterested in purchasing the items on the list.
Left alone, I unfolded the map and headed toward the Adventurer’s Street.
*
Time flew quickly, and soon it was the day of the dungeon exploration.
With a racing heart, I leapt out of bed.
The cool morning air swirled around the room, but I didn’t feel cold.
While there was still time until our meeting, I had plenty to do, so I needed to hurry.
First, I gathered all the items in my room and dashed out of the inn.
Of course, I didn’t forget to return the room key as I left the inn.
Thus, my first destination was the Swordsmanship Guild.
I rushed inside and looked for the receptionist.
“Hello!”
“Hi, Seris.”
“I’d like to store some personal belongings.”
“Oh, for that…”
The receptionist nodded at my words, pulled out some documents, and began moving her pen.
Then came the receptionist’s questions.
“What’s the storage period?”
“For one month.”
“What are the items to be stored…?”
“This leather.”
I showed the receptionist the leather I had slung over my back.
It was leftover ogre leather and tendons from making armor.
“The storage period is a month… since it’s leather, it needs to be in a non-humid place…”
Muttering to herself, the receptionist marked the documents and then handed me a small key.
“That’ll be 3 silver. The storage is on the 3rd floor. If you exceed the agreed storage period, additional fees will be charged. If you don’t come to retrieve your items after six months, they become property of our guild. Understood?”
“Yes!”
After receiving the key from the receptionist and heading to the 3rd floor, a long corridor spread out before me.
The entire 3rd floor was used as storage for guild members.
The number tag on my key was 72.
In other words, I could use room 72.
I quickly ran to room 72, opened the door, and tossed the ogre leather inside.
That wrapped up my first task.
With lighter steps, I exited the Swordsmanship Guild and headed toward the Leather Workshop.
Before heading to the dungeon, I planned to collect the ogre leather equipment I had commissioned.
“Welcome…?”
As soon as I stepped into the workshop, an employee, who greeted me warmly, trailed off.
It seemed like they recognized me.
“Please wait a moment!”
He hurriedly turned and ran deeper into the shop.
The employee returned, accompanied by the shop owner.
In the employee’s hands were the ogre leather armor made to fit my body.
“Welcome! Magician Sir!”
The shop owner’s voice was excessively loud.
Eyes of customers browsing the shop began to gather toward us.
I could tell he wanted to flaunt his personal connection with a magician.
“But you… still look the same…”
The shop owner mumbled, looking disappointed as he took in my appearance.
Recalling his words from a week ago, I smiled lightly.
If I didn’t look like a magician, I could just show some magic.
Clearing my throat, I lightly waved my hand.
Creating a light breeze using the mana in my body wasn’t difficult magic.
“The air feels a bit stale. Are you ventilating properly?”
A gentle breeze, imbued with the faint starlight, began to blow.
This was not the cold winter breeze from outside but rather a warm, gentle wind, making it clear to everyone that it was created by magic.
As surprise painted the faces of the customers, the shop owner finally broke into a satisfied smile.
“Let’s check the items.”
“Oh, my. How careless of me. Show it to me!”
“Yes!”
With the employee’s help, I began inspecting the ogre leather equipment.
First up were the boots made of ogre leather.
Without hesitation, I took off my old boots and slipped on the new ones.
“How do they feel?”
“Good.”
They fit well. They securely supported my ankles, eliminating any waste of energy.
As I tested the boots by moving around, I nodded.
Next were the gauntlet-style gloves.
After putting on the gloves and tightening the straps made from ogre tendons, I felt a robust elasticity.
I could swing my sword without fear of straining my wrists.
The armor made from ogre leather was surprisingly powerful.
As expected, even using a regular blade to scratch the leather left no marks.
Boots, gloves, belt, cloak, pants, and top.
Fully dressed in all the gear in the changing room, I nodded.
The distinctive heavy weight of the ogre leather gave me a sense of stability.
I handed the shop owner the promised 10 gold.
Thus, my second task was complete.
I disposed of my previous gear at the leather workshop and moved on.
The next destination was the large inn where we had arranged to meet.
In front of it, a huge carriage for travel awaited, along with adventurers ready to head into the dungeon.
As I hurried over, I saw Luna, the client, assessing the group of adventurers among them.
It seemed I was the last to arrive.
I awkwardly smiled and approached Luna.
“Luna.”
“Oh, Seris. You arrived just in time.”
“I guess I’m a bit late.”
“No, you’re not late.”
Luna nodded after checking my appearance.
“Then we’ll set off right away!”
This was the client’s order. The adventurers quickly moved and climbed into the large carriage.
The carriage was a big wagon, already filled with many items inside.
As the last to board, I couldn’t help but tilt my head in confusion.
The adventurers were divided into two groups.
The ranger, swordsman, and priest were crammed into a narrow space while the female magician sat comfortably by herself, separate from everyone.
Why had they divided themselves like that? I approached the magician and sat next to her, filled with curiosity.
The female magician glanced at me and turned her head away with a strange smile.
“I’ll get us going!”
Luna, sitting in the driver’s seat, shouted loudly, and the carriage began to move slowly.
It seemed that they couldn’t speed up until we left the city.
Just as I expected, once Luna passed the castle’s checkpoint, the carriage began to pick up speed.
I stared blankly out the window at the rushing scenery and the diminishing view of the Karma Empire.
When the endless ocean was no longer visible, the sound of heavy hooves clattered with the wind.
I gazed out at the cold winter breeze meeting the vast snow-covered plains, revealing a shimmering white wave.
That wave approached the carriage, carried by the wind.
Swoosh-!
In an instant, the wave of snow engulfed the inside of the carriage.
As the white snow settled on the adventurers, curses erupted from them.
I too got covered in snow, but instead, I burst into laughter.
*
A day passed traveling by carriage, and Luna informed the adventurers of the dungeon’s location.
“The dungeon is located in the Forest of Karbain’s Slumber.”
“The Forest of Karbain’s Slumber…?”
At Luna’s words, all the adventurers but me displayed intrigued expressions.
It seemed to be quite a famous place.
Hastily, I opened the adventurer’s guidebook to look for the Forest of Karbain’s Slumber.
[Forest of Karbain’s Slumber]
“The Forest of Karbain’s Slumber” is a mysterious space created by the death of the Red Dragon Kalbain.
As he died, the released hot mana continuously altered the terrain and ecosystem, with monsters evolving due to Kalbain’s mana.
It’s an attractive area where new monster materials can be obtained, but it requires special caution.
I see…
After checking the book’s content, I nodded along with the other adventurers.
The adventurers began to excitedly chatter about Luna’s words.
They speculated that there must be dragon treasure, or perhaps a dragon’s egg hidden inside.
