Chapter 98: Chapter 91

Robin's POV

I sat on the edge of the bed, my hand trembling as it held NJ's. The warmth that used to define her—the life that shone brighter than any star—was gone. Her skin, once radiant and full of vitality, was now pale, gray, and lifeless. She was still in transition, but to me, she already looked like a corpse.

Tears cascaded down my face as I tried to reconcile the vibrant young woman I loved with the fragile, cold figure before me. The weight of my decisions pressed down on my chest, suffocating me.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

This life—the curse of immortality, the endless thirst, the need to live in shadows—was never meant for her. NJ had dreams, ambitions that soared higher than the limits of the mundane world. She wanted to shine in the sun, to inspire, to leave a legacy that humanity would remember.

And now?

Now, I had taken all of that away from her.

My tears didn't stop as I stroked her hand, her features already shifting into something impossibly beautiful. The transformation had begun, erasing the tiny imperfections that made her human. Her face was growing flawless, but it was a hollow kind of beauty. It was a beauty that came at the cost of her humanity, her dreams.

Rosalie stood silently by my side, her presence a pillar I didn't deserve. She understood this pain in a way no one else could. Her own dreams had been stolen from her when she was turned. She had made peace with her eternity, but NJ's dreams were different. The limelight, the adoration of the world—how could NJ achieve those now? The sun would burn her. Time would leave her untouched while the world aged.

My eyes darted to Nasu, who stood against the wall to my right, his head bowed. His guilt radiated from him, heavy and suffocating. He was ashamed—ashamed for failing me, for failing NJ.

And then there was Jatix, kneeling on the floor with his head hanging low. His strong, indomitable presence was broken, a shell of the man who had been so quick to act but too late to stop the inevitable.

I knew it wasn't their fault.

I wanted to tell them that. I wanted to let them off the hook, to take the blame entirely on myself. But as my grief threatened to drown me, something darker stirred in its depths.

Rage.

Pure, unfiltered rage.

It bubbled up, hot and venomous, spilling into the room. The two men didn't dare to meet my gaze. They didn't have to. They could feel the shift, the air crackling with my fury.

I couldn't speak. Not like this. My emotions were too raw, too dangerous. If I let my voice out, I might say things that would drive them to self-destruction.

Instead, I lifted my hand and made a sharp gesture. Rosalie stepped closer, understanding my silent command. She was immune to my power, my emotions. She was my mate and the only one who could bear the weight of my words right now.

I signed, What happened? Who did this?

Rosalie's voice, calm but laced with the edge of my fury, broke the silence. "Robin wants to know what happened. Who was responsible?"

Jatix lifted his head slightly, his voice trembling as he recounted the events. Each word struck me like a blade, carving deeper into my anger.

By the time he finished, my gaze had turned icy, my intent clear. Whoever had done this—whoever had dared to take NJ's life and twist it into this cursed existence—would pay.

Third-Person POV

Nasu's Experience

Nasu leaned against the wall, his head bowed low, shame consuming him. He had failed. He, who was supposed to protect Robin's most cherished ones, had let this happen.

He had seen the fire in Robin's eyes when she walked into the room, her usual calm shattered by the sight of NJ lying there. Nasu wanted to speak, to offer some explanation, but the words wouldn't come. What could he say? That he had been caught off guard? That he hadn't been fast enough?

He knew it wouldn't matter. He had failed her.

As Robin's silent fury filled the room, Nasu's wolf stirred uncomfortably. It wanted to make amends, to offer some kind of penance. But all he could do was stand there and hope that Robin would forgive him in time.

~~

Jatix's Experience

Jatix knelt on the floor, his head bowed so low that his white hair brushed the ground. He had fought countless battles, faced enemies stronger than most could imagine, but he had never felt this helpless.

He replayed the scene in his head—the vampire lunging, his fangs piercing NJ's delicate skin. He had been too late. Too slow.

When Robin's rage filled the room, Jatix felt it like a physical force. He didn't dare look up. He couldn't. The weight of his failure crushed him, and he knew he deserved every ounce of her anger.

But beneath the guilt, there was something else—a quiet determination. Whoever had done this would pay. He would make sure of it, even if it cost him his life.

~~

Rosalie's Experience

Rosalie stood by Robin's side, her heart aching for her mate. She knew the pain Robin was feeling—the grief, the guilt, the helplessness. She had felt it herself, years ago, when her own dreams had been stolen.

But this was different. This was NJ. A young woman with a bright future, a future that Robin had tried to protect by staying away. And now, that future was gone.

Rosalie watched as Robin's anger simmered, her silent gestures sharp and commanding. Rosalie translated, her voice steady despite the storm brewing around them.

She wanted to comfort Robin, to tell her that it wasn't her fault. But she knew Robin wouldn't hear it. Not yet.

Instead, she stayed by her side, her presence a silent promise. They would get through this. Together.

HIDDEN PRISON/TORTURE ROOM

The room was stifling with tension, the air thick with unspoken fury. Robin sat in her chair, her hands folded neatly on her lap, her posture deceptively calm. Her face, however, betrayed her—her lips pressed into a thin line, her eyes gleaming with a cold, deadly intent.

At her feet, the vampire lay in chains, his severed limbs arranged haphazardly around him. His once-arrogant demeanor had crumbled into a pitiful mess of fear and cracks spreading across his stone-like body. He tried not to meet her gaze but failed.

Robin didn't speak. She couldn't.

Her voice was a weapon, sharper than any blade, and she feared that in her current state, it would cut deeper than intended. Jatix and Nasu stood nearby, watching silently. Both were attuned to Robin's moods and had seen her like this before, but even they couldn't risk hearing her voice now.

Rosalie stepped forward, her presence warm and grounding, a stark contrast to the ice radiating from her mate. She glanced at Robin, who began signing with precise, almost violent movements.

Rosalie nodded and turned to the vampire. Her voice was smooth, but her words carried Robin's fury like venom.

"She wants to know why you were targeting NJ," Rosalie said, her tone as cold as winter.

The vampire hesitated, licking his cracked lips. He glanced at Jatix, whose fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles had gone white, and at Nasu, whose disdain was palpable.

"I—"

Robin's hand shot up, a sharp slicing motion that Rosalie immediately translated. "She says don't waste her time."

Jatix moved without waiting for a command. His boot connected with the vampire's chest, sending him sprawling. A resounding crack echoed as fractures rippled across his torso. He let out a hoarse cry, his stone-like skin shimmering faintly in the dim light.

"I was sent by Aro!" he croaked, gasping for air.

Robin began signing again, her movements fluid but fierce. Rosalie's lips twitched into something resembling a smirk before she spoke.

"She says, 'Of course, you were. Aro's little lapdog. And you must be his favorite, hmm? The one who wiggles his tail—or something else—when Aro so much as looks at him.'"

The vampire's face twisted in confusion and anger. "My name is Santiago."

Robin's fingers flew through the air in an intricate pattern, and Rosalie barely suppressed a laugh as she translated.

"She says, 'No, it's not. It's Gosar now. Because you're Aro's G. Aro's Guy. Gosar. An anagram, see? Isn't it fitting?'"

Santiago—or Gosar, as Robin had now christened him—gritted his teeth. "You're insane."

Robin leaned forward, her hands moving again. This time, Rosalie's voice carried a deadly edge. "She says, 'I'm not insane. I'm thorough. Now answer the question.'"

ROSALIE'S POV

Rosalie watched her mate with an almost reverent fascination. Robin didn't have to speak to command the room; her presence alone was overwhelming.

Every movement of Robin's hands was a testament to her control, her precision. And yet, beneath the ice, Rosalie could feel the fire. The rage, the sorrow, the protectiveness—it all burned so brightly that it took her breath away.

And, gods, it was arousing.

Rosalie's mind wandered briefly to the past, to the people who had wronged her. Families who had turned a blind eye, men who had stolen her humanity. They had all disappeared, one way or another. And though Robin had never admitted to it, Rosalie now wondered if her mate had been behind it all.

Watching Robin now, so ruthless and unyielding, Rosalie felt a pang of gratitude. Robin would do anything to protect her family, to protect *her*.

And Rosalie loved her all the more for it.

~~

JATIX'S POV

Jatix stood like a sentinel, his eyes locked on the vampire. His heart was still heavy from what had happened to NJ, but seeing Robin like this gave him a strange sense of relief.

Robin didn't need words to convey her fury. Her silence was louder than any scream, her every motion a promise of vengeance.

When she signed, Jatix moved without hesitation. Kicking the vampire, dragging him upright, restraining him—it was all second nature. He'd do anything to help Robin deliver justice.

But there was something else, too. Watching Robin protect her family reminded Jatix of why he had sworn loyalty to her in the first place. She was merciless, yes, but only to those who deserved it. And this vampire? He deserved every ounce of her wrath.

~~

NASU'S POV

Back at the mansion, Nasu sat vigil by NJ's side. She was still, her face pale, but her breathing—though shallow—remained steady.

Nasu clenched his fists. He had failed her.

Robin had taken him in, given him purpose, and made him part of her family. And now, he had let her down. NJ was like a little sister to him, and he had sworn to protect her.

Yet here she was, teetering on the edge of a transformation she never asked for.

"I'll make it right," he whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. "I'll be here when you wake up, NJ. I won't let you face this alone."

He wiped his eyes and sat straighter, his gaze fixed on her. Robin had trusted him to stay, to be the first face NJ saw when she opened her eyes. And he wouldn't let her down again.

Back at the Interrogation

THIRD PERSONS POV

Robin's fingers flew in an intricate pattern, her movements sharp and precise. Rosalie, her voice steady, translated.

"She wants to know what Aro was planning."

Santiago winced, his body trembling. "He wanted her. Marilyn Monroe. He saw the crest on her necklace during a broadcast and suspected she was close to you. He told me to investigate, and if she was important…"

Robin's hands stilled for a moment before moving with deliberate precision.

Rosalie's voice turned colder. "If she was important, what?"

Santiago swallowed hard. "I was to bring her to Volterra. Aro thought he could use her to control you. He said if she meant something to you, she'd make the perfect leverage."

The room fell silent. Robin's gaze was like a blade, sharp enough to cut through steel. She began signing again, slower this time.

Rosalie's voice dropped to a near whisper. "She says, 'Tell Aro this: if he ever so much as 'thinks' about my family again, I'll make Volterra look like a bonfire. Understand?'"

Santiago nodded weakly, terror etched into every line of his face.

Robin stood, her presence towering despite her silence. She gestured to Jatix, who immediately grabbed the vampire and began dragging him away.

As the door closed behind them, Rosalie stepped closer to Robin, her voice soft. "You were incredible."

Robin turned to her, her expression finally softening. Her hands moved, and Rosalie smiled as she translated.

'For you, I always will be'

In that moment, Rosalie knew: Robin would destroy the world for those she loved. And Rosalie would stand beside her, no matter what.
