Chapter 16
Volume 1. Let the Game Begin
My Evil Spirit Form could not reflect its own appearance in a mirror.
I didn’t know why, but anything capable of reflecting light failed to show my image.
So, for more than ten days, I had never seen what I looked like.
But at this moment… I actually saw myself in the reflection of Fang Zheng’s pupils.
The Evil Spirit Form looked utterly terrifying, charred black from head to toe.
I wasn’t sure if this was because of cremation, the car catching fire afterward, or perhaps due to absorbing too many souls and causing my own soul to mutate.
In any case, the general shape was quite similar to my original appearance.
The difference was that my entire body appeared burned, and my limbs were strangely elongated.
This dry, charred Evil Spirit Form had arms and legs far exceeding normal human proportions, and on my face…
That eerie grin… had somehow been copied onto my face again.
I wasn’t smiling.
I was certain I wasn’t smiling at all right now, yet my face bore that bizarre smile.
Even more terrifying… the mouth had split open both cheeks, revealing the bright red flesh beneath.
My ears had turned sharp, and my entire face was nearly pitch black—only the scarlet eyes and the torn mouth corners still made it look vaguely human.
My whole face also felt stretched.
My entire body was like a lump of clay, pulled and distorted, making my original figure completely unrecognizable.
From the look in Fang Zheng’s eyes, I could clearly see that horrifying grin, that twisted figure, and those… bone-chilling hands.
To call them hands wasn’t quite accurate.
At this point, they were almost claws.
The nails were warped and razor sharp.
More importantly, though my entire body was blackened, there was a wound on my neck from which blood continuously oozed.
This blood defied physical laws—it didn’t drip to the ground but instead slithered along my body.
Bright red blood, charred skin, a twisted and stretched form, an eerie smile, those scarlet eyes, and the hair formed of dense black mist… this was what I looked like now.
Before, when I touched those nurses, I didn’t see any reflection of myself in their eyes.
But now, I could see myself in Fang Zheng’s eyes.
So… there were probably only two possible explanations.
One, Fang Zheng had experienced so many terrifying things that, to some extent, he could now perceive supernatural entities—thus he could see me.
The other… was because… I hadn’t previously pulled someone’s soul out while they were conscious.
Fang Zheng was different.
To protect myself, I had to extract his soul while he was fully conscious.
Therefore, with his soul partially detached from his body yet not fully separated, he could observe me and reflect that perception through his physical body.
I personally leaned toward the latter.
Once his soul was pulled from his body, to a certain extent, he became capable of perceiving my existence.
And now, my hand—strictly speaking, my claw—was gripping his soul’s head.
That’s why he could observe me and, in this state of partial soul-body separation, relay that observation back to the physical body, causing my image to reflect in his pupils.
But honestly, the way I looked now was truly terrifying.
Fang Zheng in front of me was nearly paralyzed with fear.
His soul hadn’t even been pulled out yet, and he had already wet himself.
No time for nonsense—I quickly yanked out his soul and pushed most of my Evil Spirit Form back into my body.
This was something I did in a panic.
I wasn’t sure if it would work, but to my surprise, I actually managed to control the body in my Evil Spirit Form.
My lower body and left hand had fully re-entered the body, while the right hand and upper body remained outside.
In this state, I could still manipulate the body, using my legs and arms to push it away from the spot...
As for why I did this, it was because… I didn’t want that guy’s piss touching my body.
Otherwise, when I went back into it, I’d be stuck reeking of urine!
Even though I had a dog at home and my room wasn’t big, I personally had a bit of a cleanliness obsession.
After pushing my body away from that spot, I finally turned back to look at the guy in front of me.
At this moment, Fang Zheng was completely dazed.
In his soul state, he was being held by one of my hands, and he watched as I controlled the body to move away.
When I turned to look at him again, his face was filled with sudden realization… and extreme fear.
"You… what the hell are you!!"
He could still talk?
Could souls really speak?
Or perhaps, his current state was what a real ghost looked like?
And me… could I really be an evil spirit now?
"I… am… some… one… you… do… not… need… to… know…"
I realized that his soul could still speak human language naturally.
But my Evil Spirit Form struggled to communicate properly.
Whenever I spoke, my voice would simultaneously carry a high-pitched female tone and a deep male tone—one raspy, one sharp—overlapping into something chilling and unnatural.
While speaking, I opened my mouth and bit off the guy’s head.
It wasn’t that I was hungry.
Actually, I had more questions I wanted to ask.
But perhaps due to the surrounding environment, I felt the desires of the Evil Spirit Form rising uncontrollably.
I feared I would lose control.
I didn’t know what would happen if a soul remained separated from the body for too long.
Would the body become a total vegetable?
But I knew one thing… if I didn’t return to the body soon, I might lose my soul completely.
"Aaaaarghhhhhh!!!!"
The sound of the wailing kept echoing in my ears, and it shook me to the core.
Although I had already died once, I was still alive now!
I still had compassion.
This kind of screaming was truly unbearable for me, so...
I sped up the movement of my mouth.
‘Crunch crunch crunch crunch…’
"Arrrghhhhhh~~!!!"
Its soul kept screaming, and even the part already in my mouth was still struggling.
But… that overwhelmingly tempting flavor made it impossible for me to stop.
Describing it as "chicken-flavored, crispy" didn’t even come close to capturing what I was tasting.
It was like… savoring the most exquisite bluefin tuna sashimi, topped with beluga caviar.
Thankfully… back when I worked with knives, I’d stolen a few bites of both, but… at this very moment, I had to say—those two were trash compared to the taste of this soul.
Sweet like divine nectar, savory like dragon and phoenix meat—just one bite would be unforgettable for a decade!
The screaming gradually faded away, and I—without realizing it—had already separated from my body, lost in the rare delicacy, savoring the aftertaste.
But… I had forgotten I was still in the middle of a game.
Just as I was enjoying myself, the door to the hospital room quietly opened… and then, a person?
No… more accurately, a thing with an extremely bizarre appearance walked in from outside.
Blood kept streaming from its body, pooling at its feet in puddles, while it wore a short-sleeved white lab coat.
The strangest part was that its head wasn’t human—it was that of a goat, covered in fur, with a pair of crimson eyes that stared directly at me.
"……"
"……"
I stayed silent for a moment, it stayed silent for a moment, and then… it silently turned around and left the room.
What the hell!
Even in Evil Spirit Form, this thing just ignored me?
Did that mean, as long as I revealed my Evil Spirit Form at the critical moment, it wouldn’t attack me?
No, no, no… that wouldn’t work.
The Evil Spirit Form could only be revealed for a limited time, and once it was exposed, my physical body was basically defenseless.
At this moment, I was standing right next to my physical body.
It was probably because this strange form of mine was blocking its line of sight that it didn’t notice my body.
Otherwise, it probably would’ve attacked already, right?
Although the death of the body didn’t necessarily mean the death of my consciousness… once I lost a place to return to, I didn’t know how long my rationality would last.
So… I couldn’t use the Evil Spirit Form as a life-saving weapon just yet.
Fang Zheng’s body was still under the bed, so it hadn’t been discovered.
That creature… clearly didn’t want to engage with me.
I didn’t know whether I or it was stronger, but I figured… if we did end up fighting, neither of us would come out unscathed.
I guessed my Evil Spirit Form would be seriously injured, but it definitely wouldn’t be unharmed either.
This was my final trump card.
If worst came to worst, I’d release the Evil Spirit Form and go all in with it!
Of course, thinking was one thing.
For now, I needed to hurry back into my body.
I had already seen what it looked like.
This thing’s right hand was covered in black fur, but inside the open white coat was what looked like a human torso, covered in countless wounds.
Just one glance was enough to send chills down the spine.
Its chest to abdomen was completely split open.
This creature’s body… looked just like a full cadaver donated to a medical school for dissection—except why the hell did it have a goat’s head??
Was it cosplay?
But this taste was way too intense!
Its right hand was shaped like a human hand but was covered in thick black fur, and its arm was full of wounds, which were still dripping blood.
Even though it was only a quick glance, I still saw two twisted humanoid souls inside its open abdominal cavity.
Inside a man’s body were two twisted human-shaped souls.
That didn’t mean this bizarre cosplay freak was pregnant, because… I could see that soul was still filled with fear.
I could even make out the face—it was a woman’s face, her eyes rolled back as if screaming, her face covered in blood.
The other one was male, also eyes rolled back in pain, mouth wide in a silent scream.
It seemed… the souls of those two who had just died had already been stuffed into this thing’s belly.
