Chapter 47: New Team
After Sasuke and Boruto had left, Jiraiya and Naruto later woke up, feeling somewhat disillusioned. "Why are we sleeping in a forest? Weren't we supposed to start our training?" Naruto mumbled, rubbing his eyes.
"Never mind that," Jiraiya said, shaking his head. "Let's get back to the village."
Things with them continued on as usual, but Daniel had other plans. He went straight to his lab to update his clones. Absorbing the old ones, he made new ones with his current abilities. He was eager to experiment with the karma mark—not just the completed karma but also its relation to Orochimaru's rebirth technique and curse marks. Having all of Orochimaru's knowledge at his disposal, he was driven to explore the possibility of creating a white karma mark.
"I remember something about incompatible vessels," Daniel mused. "But I want to learn more about it so I can give out white karma marks if needed." He didn't have anyone in mind to bestow it upon, but the secrets waiting to be unfolded intrigued him.
With Urashiki's memories now part of him, Daniel had already acquired a wealth of information regarding the Otsutsuki clan, their techniques, and most importantly, their locations and how to track them. Urashiki had been a repository of knowledge, making Daniel's smirk grow wider. "This is more interesting than I thought," he muttered.
As he collected his thoughts, Daniel considered the potential of isolating some of his abilities when implanting a karma mark. "Maybe I could use the karma to alter a person's genes, like with the Uchiha DNA. I could potentially grant the Sharingan to others," he thought, a smile forming on his lips. But that would unfold with time.
For now, he had more pressing matters to attend to—leading a team of genin. "Let's head back," he said, testing out his newly acquired pure eyes. Unlike Boruto, Daniel had managed to awaken it in both eyes. He opened a portal back to his shop.
"Sold out already!" Daniel exclaimed as he entered, seeing the empty shelves. "It's always like this, isn't it," he muttered, stepping in. He saw the clones he had made to watch over the shop lazing around, their work done since everything was sold out. To keep the demand up, Daniel always waited before restocking.
At least he was now more than stable financially, Daniel thought as he lazed around, joining his clones. "They're probably waiting now," he muttered, standing up after hours of lounging.
"What's with this guy? It's been two hours now," a genin grumbled as they waited in Training Ground 12.
"Yeah, I kinda agree with you on this one," another replied, leaning against a tree.
"Look," the first pointed as Daniel appeared in the distance, coming toward them.
"Is that him?" they wondered, watching the figure approach.
"Yo!" Daniel greeted as he arrived, a light chuckle escaping his lips. "You guys look like you've been waiting for a while."
The trio glared at him, their faces flushed with anger. "Of course we are! We've been waiting for hours!" they yelled in unison.
"Ahem, let's forget the small stuff. Anyway, I'm Daniel, your substitute leader for the next two years," he said, greeting them nonchalantly.
"Wait, what? Isn't it supposed to be three months?" one of the genin asked, eyes wide with disbelief.
"Things changed, and it's two years now. Don't worry, I'll take care of ya! Anyway, it's getting late, which is perfect for this. Since y'all are Hyugas, we'll start with some light training. Here, get these back from me, and the session will be over," Daniel said, holding their headbands in his hands.
The genin were shocked. They hadn't felt a thing, yet he was holding their headbands. When they checked themselves, the headbands were indeed missing—it wasn't a trick. Although taken aback, they quickly calmed themselves and focused.
"Impressive. At least you catch on quick," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "I wonder how far they'll go with me pushing them beyond their limits," he mused, a concerning smile forming on his lips. "Maybe we'll see a doujutsu user with Sage Mode."
"I think our leader is broken," one of the genin whispered, pointing at Daniel, who couldn't contain his excitement and let out a disturbing laugh.
"Ahem, don't be rude, Daichi," Daniel said, his tone playful yet authoritative.
"Anyway, as I was saying, this is light training. I'll assess your skills and get the basics regarding your capabilities and potential. With this, we'll move on to the real training," Daniel explained, his tone casual yet authoritative.
"Hold on, what do you mean 'training'? From what I hear, you're talking as if we won't be doing missions for a while," Ryuu, the other Hyuga genin, said, a hint of concern in his voice.
"What... Is that true?" Daichi asked, looking at Daniel with anger and disappointment.
"That will be decided by this session, but yes, that was my plan. My main focus is to make sure you all are actually capable shinobi, not just some guys who only know how to play pokey pokey," Daniel said, his tone growing serious.
"Is that supposed to be an insult?" Ryuu tensed up, his fists clenched.
"Easy there. I'm by no means mocking you. What I mean is that until I deem you all capable of going on missions, they'll be put on hold," Daniel clarified.
"And how are you, who's the same age as us, capable of making that decision?" Daichi demanded, his frustration evident.
"Calm down, guys. Let's not escalate things. If he was assigned as our leader for two years, then he must at least be able to halt us from taking missions until then," Hikari said, trying to calm Ryuu and Daichi down.
"Haa, is it just my tone?" Daniel muttered to himself, then addressed the group. "Listen, I have nothing against you guys, and I don't have any ulterior motives. What I want is for you all to, by the end of our time together, be able to handle yourselves, especially as Hyugas."
"Anyway, I think we should start," he added, his eyes glinting with determination.
"Wait, isn't it getting kinda late?" Daichi noted, glancing at the setting sun.
"That it is," Daniel said as he vanished, leaving the three genin there. Their task—to get their headbands back—had just begun.
