American Tax Officer

Chapter 391: Decision_2

"If the White House really ends up signing off honestly, then David truly has no reason, and no need to take the risk of stirring up something as significant as impeachment."

Katherine furrowed her brows and, after a moment, said, "Alright, Chief Inspector David, I understand everything you've said, but this matter is of great importance, and I need to think it over properly!"

"Understood, we'll await the good news then!"

Although the three, including David, were eager to see Carmela's stance, they knew everything that needed to be said had been conveyed; it wouldn't be appropriate to press her too hard, so they left the office first.

"What do you think, Windsor?"

Right after the three left, Katherine immediately turned to her chief of staff.

"Madam Vice President, I believe this trade is worth making!"

America's Vice President was essentially a powerless mascot, and as the Vice President's chief of staff, one had even less presence.

However, if she really accepted David's proposal and things progressed smoothly, then once Carmela took over the White House, she, Windsor, would naturally become a powerful White House chief of staff.

The temptation of skyrocketing to such a position overnight was truly more striking than waiting another five years!

"But Windsor, if we do this, The Big Three Groups will be irate, and their retaliation is no joke. Moreover, the White House might not refuse to sign..."

"Madam Vice President!"

Windsor, somewhat anxious, said emphatically, "The Big Three Groups are indeed formidable, but at this moment, David's strength can be said to be no less than theirs, perhaps even surpassing them to some extent!"

"We Americans have a saying, 'He who holds Congressional Hill holds the world.' David currently has an absolute advantage in the House of Congressmen, and although the Senate is not yet under control, it already has significant influence."

"Moreover, the legislation is now one step away from being finalized. Once it's enacted, The Big Three Groups will be severely weakened!"

"Besides, think about it; if the bill passes, the biggest beneficiary, of course, would be the Internal Revenue Service, but who comes next? It's undoubtedly the White House!"

"After all, once the bill is passed, it's foreseeable that the national finances will be substantial, and with sufficient finances, the welfare of the citizens can be guaranteed."

"And who wouldn't sing praises of the White House in a period of national prosperity and peace?"

"By then, not only will you be the only female, African-American President in America's history, but you will also be seen as a President who has made outstanding contributions!"

Hearing her chief of staff's depiction, Katherine inevitably drifted into pleasant imaginings.

It did make sense; once the bill was passed, the nation's finances would be instantly sufficient, and if she really became President during this period, it would indeed be a huge boon!

"As for your concern about the White House signing, of course, it's possible. But this game is a gamble; let's bet they'll ultimately refuse to sign. If we win, we will make a fortune. Even if we lose, didn't David promise us 28 years of support? That wouldn't be too bad a deal, would it?"

Katherine nodded, clearly in agreement with her chief of staff's words, but then she remembered something and said with concern, "But Windsor, you also heard some rumors last night, saying The Big Three Groups even threatened many senators with their family members..."

"From the information I've gathered, The Big Three Groups did make threats, and even took action. However, earlier today, I also heard through some channels that last night the CIA and FBI took some actions."

"According to reliable information, these senators and their families are now under the close protection of these two major agencies. I think you don't have to worry about that at all."

"The renown of our two major American agencies isn't for nothing. The Big Three Groups, though wealthy and ruthless, won't be able to stir up too much trouble with these two agencies watching them."

Katherine had already been leaning towards David's side, now that she was seeking reassurance from her chief of staff, it was merely for an added psychological comfort.

And now, after this conversation, her mind was completely made up!

"Let's go to the Senate!"

"Understood!"

Seemingly already envisioning herself as the White House chief of staff, Windsor scurried out to make the arrangements.

Meanwhile, inside a car returning to the Internal Revenue Service Headquarters.

"Do you think... Katherine will agree to stand with us?"

Obadiah's expression was somewhat serious as he looked at David and Donald.

"Just from her expression, I feel she's very interested in our proposal, and if I were in her shoes, I'd most likely accept it," Donald mused, propping up his chin. "After all, the chance to skyrocket to power isn't a common occurrence."

"I concur with Deputy Director Donald," David added. "Even though I've never studied psychology, as a mascot-like Vice President in the face of the temptation to reach the highest seat of power, it would be incredibly difficult to resist."

"Moreover, I also noticed her Chief of Staff. Her Chief of Staff seemed even more eager than she herself was, so even if Katherine might hesitate, I believe her Chief of Staff will surely do everything in their power to sway her to our side!"

David's prediction had hit the mark. Just after they had left, an eager Windsor had persuaded her exactly in the way he described.

"Hmm..."

Hearing their responses, Obadiah felt considerably relieved.

But just then, his cell phone rang from his pocket. He answered immediately, "What's going on?"

"What! All right, I've got it!"

After the call ended, Obadiah, with a grave face, looked at the two of them and said, "Just received news, Katherine's motorcade has already headed to the Senate."

"What! Could it be that she has rejected our proposal?"

It wasn't surprising that Donald would think that way.

Generally speaking, if she had accepted their proposal, she would have likely notified them in advance.

If there was no notification, the result spoke for itself...

Apart from Obadiah and Donald, at this moment, David's expression also became uneasy.

Could it be that Katherine still planned to side with The Big Three Groups?

But that didn't make sense!

An uncertain election nearly 6 years away, versus the present opportunity to climb to the top in one fell swoop - a normal person would choose the latter.

Could The Big Three Groups have made her some kind of promise?

At the same time, on Senado Island.

"What's the situation with Katherine?"

"What's going on, hasn't she given us her reply yet?"

"Damn it, is she planning to give her vote to David's side? What advantage did David give her to disregard even our promises of promoting her position!"

Upon hearing that Katherine's motorcade had left for the Senate, the Freemasonry members on-site were all cursing with faces sullen with fury.

Just like David and the others, they too had not received any response from Katherine, which led them to instinctively believe she was prepared to align with the opposition.

Amidst countless speculations and curses, at this time, Katherine's convoy had already arrived at the gates of Congressional Hill.

"Madam Vice President, are you sure you don't want to notify the Internal Revenue Service in advance?"

In the car, Windsor asked cautiously.

"No need, if we notify them now, the IRS will have expectations and won't experience as much of a psychological impact."

"If we don't give a response now, their nerves are sure to be on edge, and when we cast our supporting vote at the meeting, the entire IRS will be even more grateful to us!"

It had to be said, Katherine had a knack for controlling human psychology.
