Chapter 575: 575. A Calculated Plan!
"Throwing the Mother Box to the end of time—can The Flash even do that!?"
Like a stone dropped into a still lake, Old Bruce Wayne's words sent ripples of shock through the room. Everyone turned their eyes toward The Flash, who had remained silent until now.
It was no secret that The Flash possessed the Speed Force. Every hero in the Justice Society was aware of his abilities, but traveling across the timeline? That was unheard of.
Even The Flash himself—Barry Allen—was caught off guard by Old Bruce Wayne's suggestion. He flinched, stood up abruptly, and stared at Bruce with an uneasy expression.
"Bruce, doing something like that would disrupt the natural flow of time," young Barry Allen whispered.
"I know," Old Bruce Wayne replied calmly.
"You know, and you're still—besides, I don't even have full mastery over the Speed Force yet! Even if I could take the Mother Box into the Speed Force, there's no guarantee I'd be able to make it all the way to the end of time and back!" Barry frowned.
"I never actually intended for you to do it," Old Bruce Wayne said, turning toward the nervous young speedster.
"What—?" Barry was baffled. He glanced around at the others before looking back at Bruce. "Then what are you saying? Am I doing it or not?"
"I see now," Doctor Fate suddenly smiled.
Standing up, he looked at Old Bruce Wayne with an approving expression before speaking.
"Time travel is inherently dangerous. Even the slightest misstep could bring about unknown catastrophes. Unless we have no other choice, there's no need to take such a risk. So, this is just a bluff.
It doesn't matter if The Flash can actually do it—what matters is making Steppenwolf believe he can. That alone is enough."
Hearing Doctor Fate's explanation, Old Bruce Wayne gave a small nod without saying a word.
Now, everyone in the room understood Batman's strategy.
Their goal was to force Steppenwolf out into the open before he could proceed with his next step. If they succeeded, they would have the advantage—waiting in position while their enemy was forced to act.
Most people might not fully grasp the power of the Speed Force, but Steppenwolf and the forces of Apokolips surely did. There was no way Darkseid's army was ignorant of it.
So, as long as they spread the rumor, Steppenwolf would have no choice but to take it seriously. Even if there was only a one-in-ten-thousand chance that The Flash could actually do it, Steppenwolf couldn't afford to take that risk.
After all, the Mother Box contained the supreme technological legacy of Apokolips. If it was truly lost at the end of time, not only would Earth be safe for the foreseeable future, but even Steppenwolf himself would face severe consequences.
"Great plan. I'll start spreading the word immediately," Hourman said as he shot to his feet.
"Good," Old Bruce Wayne nodded. "In the meantime, Black Adam, Shazam, and Doctor Fate—you three will remain in the Batcave. If Steppenwolf gets desperate, he'll do whatever it takes to seize the Mother Box."
"Understood," Black Adam said with a slight nod, not objecting to Batman's proposal.
He knew very well that if the Mother Box fell into enemy hands, Kahndaq would also be doomed.
"The Flash and Queen Hippolyta, you two will also stay. Once Steppenwolf hears the news, he won't just attempt to take the Mother Box—he might also try to assassinate The Flash. Staying here ensures your safety."
"What about us?" Hawkman stood up as well.
Old Bruce Wayne pondered for a moment before answering.
"You have a more important task. I've scanned the Earth's surroundings with satellites, but I found nothing. That leads me to believe Steppenwolf has set up a hidden outpost on the planet. Your job is to find it.
Hawkman, you and Green Lantern will take a team and track it down. I'll also try to investigate their main base. In the end, it'll be a matter of who's faster—us or them."
"Leave it to me," Hawkman said with a confident smile.
The first Green Lantern solemnly nodded but then hesitated before speaking again. "Should I try contacting the Green Lantern Corps? Darkseid's reckless invasion of civilizations is something they won't ignore."
"There's no time. A round trip for you would take several days, and by the time you return, the war might already be over," Old Bruce Wayne shook his head.
"Exactly. Once we spread the news, Steppenwolf won't be able to hold back for long. Green Lantern, right now, Earth needs your strength," Hourman added.
"Alright, I'll use my ring to try and track Steppenwolf's movements. With that many troops hiding on Earth, it shouldn't be too hard to find them," Green Lantern nodded.
With their roles assigned, the heroes left the meeting room, each going off to carry out their part of the plan.
Hawkman and Green Lantern took to the skies, preparing to scour the world for Steppenwolf's hidden outpost. Meanwhile, Hourman and his team, including Doctor Mid-Nite and Wildcat, also departed from the Batcave.
Black Adam, carrying the Mother Box's container, arrived at a designated location with Shazam. This was a small training facility on the outskirts of the Batcave.
The space wasn't large, about the size of a basketball court. Originally, it had been a combat training area for Robin, but Bruce Wayne had cleared out all the equipment, leaving the room completely empty.
The Flash, Barry Allen, opened the door and led Black Adam, Shazam, and Queen Hippolyta inside. Black Adam then carefully placed the Mother Box in the center of the room.
"Steppenwolf's Boom Tubes allow him to teleport anywhere. That means we must stay by the Mother Box at all times," Hippolyta said softly.
The Flash nodded in agreement before turning to the ever-stoic Black Adam and asking,
"So, uh, Mr. Black Adam, since we're staying here, is there anything else we need?"
"Four chairs."
"Huh?" The Flash thought he had misheard.
"Four chairs," Black Adam repeated, looking up.
"Oh! Right, right, give me one second—"
In a blink, The Flash disappeared and reappeared with four chairs in hand. He quickly handed them out to the others and set one up for himself. "Here you go. Please, have a seat."
Outside the emergency laboratory, old Bruce Wayne watched the surveillance feed on his phone screen, his gaze lingering on Black Adam and the others sitting together for a moment before slipping the phone back into his pocket.
"Batman... uh, Mr. Wayne." Behind old Bruce Wayne, Dr. Silas hesitated before speaking.
To be honest, he had grown up listening to urban legends about Batman. As an adult, he had always believed Batman was a myth and had even tried to use science to explain the accounts of those who claimed to have seen him.
But after General Zod's invasion, when Batman—who had vanished for decades—suddenly reappeared and saved everyone's lives, Dr. Silas couldn't help but feel deeply moved.
What shocked him the most, however, was that the legendary Batman was none other than Bruce Wayne, the richest man in the world.
"Just call me Bruce, no need to be so formal," old Bruce Wayne said softly, his eyes fixed on Tim, who remained unconscious behind the glass.
"Don't worry, whether it's this place or your identity, I swear I won't tell anyone. I promise." Dr. Silas spoke sincerely.
"I believe you. You're a good man, Silas." Old Bruce Wayne sighed, then calmly murmured, "I need you to take Tim and leave this place."
"L-Leave?" Dr. Silas looked at Bruce Wayne in surprise.
But Bruce Wayne simply said, "The Mother Box is being kept in the Batcave. If Steppenwolf comes for it, this place will become a battlefield. I can't leave Tim here, and you can't stay here either."
Hearing this, Dr. Silas lowered his head. He knew Batman was right—if Steppenwolf attempted to seize the Mother Box, this place would be ground zero for devastation, and people like them wouldn't survive.
"But Red Robin, he—"
"Tim's condition has stabilized, and I'll have Robin and Aquagirl go with you. You don't need to worry about that. What you need to do is keep their identities hidden—along with your son's."
"Victor..." Dr. Silas understood Bruce Wayne's intentions.
"This isn't their fight. The Titans were originally meant to be a reserve force for the Justice Society. Until they're ready, us old folks will handle these threats," old Bruce Wayne said, turning to look at Silas.
"Alright, I promise you—they won't come to any harm." Dr. Silas straightened up, speaking with determination.
As he watched Dr. Silas enter the emergency room, old Bruce Wayne's gaze lingered on Tim's face for a moment. He sighed deeply, then turned and left.
Taking the elevator down, he arrived at his Batcomputer. Sitting down in his chair, he stared at the progress bar flashing on the screen.
This was the system he had set up to track the Mother Box. The Batcomputer was continuously scanning global signals, trying to pinpoint its location.
Previously, Batman had never encountered a Mother Box, so he couldn't determine its energy signature and had to search blindly. But now, things were different.
He plugged a USB drive into the computer, and a string of data was transferred into the system.
With one Mother Box in hand, identifying its energy signature made locating the other two significantly easier. The only remaining challenge was time.
Once Steppenwolf obtained two Mother Boxes, he would undoubtedly place them together. In other words, finding the other two Mother Boxes would lead directly to Steppenwolf's lair!
