Chapter 573: 573. Pushing Back Steppenwolf.
On the aircraft, Batman, old Bruce Wayne, had a cold expression, as if his face were made of ice that hadn't thawed in a thousand years.
On the computer screen beside him, there was a damage alert on the image of Red Robin's battle suit, and the device used to monitor his heartbeat and heart rate had also been damaged.
At that moment, he couldn't determine Red Robin's condition, nor did he know if he was still alive.
With a furrowed brow and a face full of wrinkles, old Bruce Wayne gritted his teeth, his hands firmly gripping the weapon systems, continuously directing fire at Steppenwolf as if trying to vent his inner anger.
Thud thud thud thud!!!
Rapid gunfire slammed into Steppenwolf's body, covering a two-meter radius around him. The bullets blasted craters into the hard ground and walls, forcing Steppenwolf to raise his hand to block and step back two paces.
Human weapons were difficult to effectively damage a New God, and couldn't break through Steppenwolf's battle armor. He merely lifted his hand to protect his face, showing no regard for the attack.
The reason Steppenwolf raised his hand to block his face wasn't due to fear of the bullets striking his unprotected face, but because the incoming fire was too bright and made it hard for him to keep his eyes open.
Having personally experienced the attack, Steppenwolf sneered coldly. The weapons hitting him had no effect at all. It seemed he had overestimated humans.
Originally, seeing that Earth was now under human rule, he had thought their combat strength surpassed even that of Atlantis and Paradise Island combined. Now, however, he realized that he had been worrying too much.
With this in mind, Steppenwolf suddenly tightened his grip on the giant axe in his hand, crouched, and after building up his strength, he roared and leaped high, charging straight at the incoming bullets, heading for the Batplane.
Batman saw this and frowned slightly, quickly twisting the steering wheel, attempting to dodge Steppenwolf's assault.
But the opponent's speed was too fast. Before the Batplane could react, Steppenwolf had already slammed into the cockpit glass.
Now facing Steppenwolf up close, Batman looked up, his cold eyes meeting the beast's. He knew that the bulletproof glass wouldn't be able to stop this monster.
With his feet securely clamped to the Batplane, Steppenwolf gripped his giant axe, raising it high, ready to strike down at the human in front of him.
But just as Steppenwolf thought victory was certain, he suddenly noticed that the human before him had a cold smile on his lips.
His gaze shifted, and Steppenwolf noticed a metal device emerging from the top of the Batplane, crackling with strange energy and flashing a bolt of lightning about the width of a thumb.
The light flickered briefly before quickly dissipating into the air.
Steppenwolf didn't understand what the human was doing, but he felt the tingling sensation across his body once again.
Looking at the swirling black clouds around him, Steppenwolf almost instantly realized the human's plan. It wasn't a weapon, but a special device designed to attract lightning.
It wouldn't be as effective on the ground, but up here in the sky, the human was clearly waiting for Steppenwolf to fall right into the trap.
Without hesitation, Batman pressed the eject button. The seat beneath him cracked open, and Batman was thrown out of the cockpit by the air pressure.
Seeing the human slip away from his sight, Steppenwolf hurriedly attempted to leave the Batplane, but it was already too late.
Amidst the black clouds, eerie lights flashed. Just as Steppenwolf made a move, several massive bolts of lightning descended like divine punishment, amplified by the force of the Eternium, crashing down from all directions.
There was no chance to escape as Steppenwolf was engulfed by the storm of lightning.
The sky lit up as bright as day, and the explosive sound shattered all the glass below. The immense power caused many people to feel their heartbeats slow for a moment.
In the high sky, a shadow fell like a shooting star towards the ground. Just before hitting the ground, the figure suddenly spread its wings, producing a sharp whoosh of wind.
If someone looked closely, they would see that it wasn't wings, but a black cloak that resembled wings.
The shadow glided like a bat on the hunt, and once it reached its target, it used the grappling hook gun to grab onto it. The rope quickly retracted, and the person landed smoothly on the ground.
Not bothering to stow the grappling hook, Batman tossed the gun aside and quickly ran to Red Robin's side.
"Batman?" Dr. Silas, seeing the newcomer, had mixed feelings. On one hand, he was relieved that a hero had finally stepped in, but on the other, he was deeply worried about Red Robin's condition.
Batman didn't respond to Silas. He crouched down and checked Red Robin's pulse, relieved to find he was still alive.
"Thank goodness, I made it in time."
Taking out two syringes from his pocket, Batman immediately injected them into Red Robin's body. The most important thing now was to keep Tim alive.
"Is that the Mother Box?" Batman asked while injecting.
Upon hearing this, Dr. Silas froze for a moment, then quickly nodded. "That's right, it's the Mother Box. That monster is after it. We absolutely cannot let him take it."
"Mm."
Batman's gaze never left Red Robin's form. He murmured softly, though it was unclear if it was an answer.
Looking at Red Robin, who had fallen unconscious, Batman's face hardened. The images from his dreams resurfaced in his mind, and the memory of Tim being nailed to the Wayne Manor gates was still as vivid as ever.
His fist slowly clenched, and Batman felt an overwhelming sense of anger and helplessness flooding his body.
Just then, Dr. Silas's panicked voice broke through the tension.
"Batman! The, the monster is back!"
Dr. Silas had seen Batman's actions earlier. He hadn't expected Batman to wield such terrifying power with lightning, and what shocked him even more was that the monster hadn't died from it.
Batman, hearing this, turned slightly, and indeed, his gaze locked onto a massive figure heading toward him.
It was Steppenwolf, but he didn't look any better. His battle armor was emitting black smoke, and the giant axe in his hand had visible cracks.
Clearly, even Steppenwolf hadn't come out unscathed from the earlier attack.
"Batman, what should we do?" Dr. Silas asked, standing up while holding the Mother Box, his face filled with caution as he looked at Steppenwolf.
He knew all too well that Batman was just a human and didn't possess the same extraordinary combat strength as the members of the Justice Society. However, Batman didn't move. He merely crouched, coldly watching Steppenwolf in the distance.
Steppenwolf came to a stop, his eyes filled with a murderous intent that could not be suppressed.
"Human... You're impressive."
With a heavy thud, Steppenwolf drove the giant axe, now cracked, into the ground. He was seething with rage at the human who not only wounded him but also destroyed his weapon.
Buzz buzz buzz
The sharp buzzing of dozens of demon-like creatures filled the air as they surrounded Steppenwolf, enclosing Batman, Dr. Silas, and the others.
"I admit you've been clever, but you must understand, against true power, these little tricks don't stand a chance."
Upon hearing this, Batman finally moved.
"Is that so?"
Batman slowly stood up, taking two steps forward to stand in front of Dr. Silas and Red Robin. He calmly gazed at Steppenwolf.
"Then let's see what true power looks like."
'You?'
Steppenwolf narrowed his eyes.
As Batman finished speaking, a figure descended from the sky, crashing heavily to the ground, leaving deep footprints in the already shattered rock.
The figure quickly rose and drew a sword from their waist, standing beside Batman. It was Hippolyta, who had arrived with him.
At the same moment, in the blink of an eye, a crimson figure appeared beside Batman. Aside from Old Bruce Wayne, no one knew when this person had arrived.
This teleportation-like ability was so fast that even Steppenwolf only vaguely saw a trail of motion.
"Did I arrive late?" The Flash, Barry Allen, asked softly, before his gaze immediately shifted to the gravely injured Red Robin, his expression changing dramatically.
The Flash had actually arrived earlier. When Batman contacted him, he had rushed from Central City. Since the situation hadn't been clearly explained, he had been helping injured police officers and some scientists who hadn't yet escaped, which delayed his direct involvement in the battle.
Batman didn't answer The Flash's question. He simply continued to lock eyes with Steppenwolf, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
Then, in a flash of light, a giant symbol of life appeared behind Batman. On top of the half-collapsed Starfall Laboratory, a massive life sigil materialized.
At the same time, several figures clad in various battle suits emerged from a portal—heroes of the Justice Society, led by the Hourman.
Seeing that in just a few seconds, these humans had summoned such a large group, Steppenwolf's expression shifted.
He wasn't worried about losing to them in combat—he was certain of his fighting strength—but he sensed some strange, unfamiliar energy from certain members of this group.
As a strategist and commander, Steppenwolf was not ready to engage these people head-on without being almost certain of victory.
Especially after sustaining some injuries and having his weapon destroyed.
After a brief moment of silence, a deep blue portal suddenly opened above Steppenwolf.
"Compared to other worlds, you're somewhat interesting. I'll leave the Mother Box with you for now. But next time, it won't be such a small-scale skirmish."
With that, Steppenwolf and the parademons disappeared from view in an instant.
All that remained was the massive axe deeply embedded in the rock, reflecting a faint, eerie glow in the night.
