America 1919
Chapter 602: 214. The enormous commercial empire behind the horse racing association
This was an unequal battle!
Westglenn had already set a large trap, just waiting for Kelvin Murphy and others to walk into it. In fact, these foolish people did not disappoint Westglenn, they really did walk into it!
"This is the aftermath management from Westglenn's side about this matter!"
Robert, holding the report about Westglenn's aftermath management farm which he had recorded over the phone, found Donnie.
Donnie didn't even glance at it, tossing it aside as he asked, "Just tell me the outcome of the matter."
Robert said, "The farm's staff has been reduced by more than half, and the riots in the other farms have also been forcibly terminated due to our actions. Those farm workers are now honestly working!"
Donnie laughed heartily and said, "That's it then. Now they still have wages and a place to live, they should be thanking us. In a few more years, these people will completely lose their jobs!"
Future generations have glorified the liberation of black people in the southern United States, but the truth of the matter is that the Civil War did not truly resolve the living conditions of black people in the South, and the purpose of the Civil War was not to free black people, either. The fundamental reason was that the interests of both North and South had reached a point where they had to be resolved by force!
As for the subsequent liberation of black people on southern farms, it wasn't because those farm owners suddenly developed a conscience, but because industrialization had completely replaced manpower, which was also the case for agriculture.
When those farm owners no longer needed these black people, of course, it was improbable that they would keep them and continue to pay their wages.
From beginning to end, the United States never really cared for black people.
Even now, with such a significant incident occurring on Donnie's farm, not a single mainstream newspaper in the United States reported it, not even those from the South.
But if this incident had happened in the North, to white people, it would have turned into an earth-shattering event.
"Since they've become obedient, let's have Westglenn come back, and, by the way, inform Carmelo to reduce the workers' benefits by 20 percent."
Donnie told this to Robert.
Robert nodded and said, "Alright!"
After dealing with this matter, Donnie stood up and left his office to head to the 40th floor of the Surf Hotel, where he found Nucky attending to a guest.
"I still have some matters to attend to here, wait for me for a bit!"
Upon seeing Donnie, Nucky greeted him with a smile on his face.
Donnie waved his hand and said with a smile, "I'm not here for anything important, you go ahead with your business!"
At this point, Donnie and Nucky's relationship was that of mutual affection.
The person who had come to discuss business with Nucky very considerately got up and took his leave.
"I had thought you would stay in Boise City for a few days!"
After the other person left, Nucky leaned back on the sofa and said with an easy smile.
Donnie waved his hand and said, "UFC's matches have already started, so there's no need to stay there. Moreover, there are matters in Atlantic City that need handling!"
Nucky felt tempted. At the level Donnie was at, any matter that attracted his attention was surely significant.
"What is it that made you come back specially?"
Donnie explained to Nucky his desire to build a large sports stadium in Atlantic City and also shared his own ideas for the utilization of the stadium.
After listening, Nucky's interest intensified even further.
"So, you have your eyes on that piece of land I have?"
In Nucky's view, Donnie could have completed this project on his own, considering UFC's events were solely his, and with Donnie's financial power and influence in Atlantic City, accomplishing this task wouldn't be difficult.
And on this matter, Nucky's greatest advantage was that he owned most of the land in Atlantic City!
And just so, building such a sports stadium required a large piece of land!
"Aside from the North District, that area near the highway, I will hope you can offer that land. Just like with the Surf Hotel before, you provide the land, I provide the money, let us jointly invest in this stadium!"
Donnie faced Nucky without concealment, directly stating his plan.
Nucky asked, "What about horse racing? Will we co-host this venture together, or will you tackle it on your own, just like UFC?"
A sports stadium wasn't very appealing to Nucky, but it was the horse racing mentioned by Donnie that truly piqued his interest. Although that business had not yet started, Nucky believed it would be profitable.
Donnie laughed wholeheartedly and said, "Of course, I hope you will participate, Nucky—not just you, I've also decided to invite City Hall to join!"
This time, it was Nucky who was puzzled. Horse racing, by all accounts, looked like a profitable venture, yet Donnie was so readily letting him in.
However, Nucky's puzzlement lasted only a moment, and he quickly replied with a smile, "Of course, I have no problems with that. So we've decided on this matter joyfully, just like that?"
Donnie nodded and said, "Yes, but like I said before, I will hold the management rights to the Racing Club!"
Nucky: "Naturally!"
A deal involving millions of US dollars was decided by Donnie and Nucky in just a few sentences, and afterward, Nucky inquired Donnie about some more details of the Racing Club.
"If this Racing Club can be successful, it will not only attract more tourists to Atlantic City but will also better unite the hearts of people in Atlantic City. I think by then, the entire Atlantic City will be working for us!"
