Chapter 26
The northern district of the royal capital, Reinburg, is an academic area where promising young people gather. This district is home to several large educational institutions, resembling universities, and is also the site of numerous state-run research facilities where the geniuses of Kainriese come together.
Although it’s just one district within the city, its size and economic scale far surpass the city of Elacton. Surrounded by massive irrigation canals, this district forms a city within a city, even though it lies within the royal capital.
“…This is incredible, like something out of a fantasy world.”
“Hmm? Did you say something?”
I had just picked up the fruit tart I had reserved at the shop recommended by Akira-san, returned home where the Moon Gate was, and crossed worlds to arrive in the northern district of Reinburg.
I wasn’t alone—Camille, who graduated from an academy located within this district, was accompanying me.
“The northern district is the largest area in the royal capital. Even so, it’s not enough space, so they grow medicinal herbs for research outside the capital.”
“It’s this big, and it’s still not enough?”
The northern district of the royal capital is separated from the eastern and western districts by a massive irrigation canal, making it impossible to move freely between them.
Many small boats travel along the canal, but the northern district is blocked by high stone walls, making it impossible to climb. While you can observe the northern district from the outside, crossing the canal to reach the other side is no easy task.
There are four entrances to the northern district: one is a large checkpoint on the main road extending from the central district, and the other two are checkpoints on the bridges connecting the eastern and western districts. Lastly, there’s a gate for entering from outside the capital.
“The main road’s checkpoint is used by merchants transporting goods to the academies, so regular people use one of the two checkpoints on the east or west.”
The bridges at the eastern and western checkpoints are like the Rialto Bridge in Europe, a place I once saw on TV—a beautiful landmark.
Camille and I were at the western checkpoint, and after waiting for several minutes, we underwent a baggage inspection.
“That’s an Enfibe and a Laiosar Promica Medal… All right, you can pass.”
Both Camille and I were carrying few items, so the inspection didn’t take much time.
At first, they were suspicious of the box of fruit tarts I was holding, but once I showed them my Enfibe silver Promica Medal and the Promica Medal of the Castiano family from the central district, they were immediately convinced.
Such is the power of noble authority.
After crossing the bridge and entering the northern district, I found myself in a lush, green space.
Unlike other districts, where buildings were crammed together, the northern district had evenly spaced, well-maintained trees lining the streets. Grass grew along the roadside, and I even saw what looked like students lying down, napping.
For a moment, I wondered if I was really still within the royal capital, but the scenery of a town harmoniously blended with nature convinced me that this was indeed the academic area, as Camille, who was walking beside me, nostalgically murmured.
As we walked along the beautifully maintained road, I listened to Camille talk about this district she knew so well.
“That over there is the Sandrique Cathedral, the only religious school in the royal capital.”
“A religious school? What do they study there?”
After entering the northern district from the western side and walking a bit, Camille pointed out a massive structure called the Sandrique Cathedral.
True to the name, the cathedral was an awe-inspiring, castle-like building in the Gothic style, with intricate carvings that made it a work of art in itself.
It was situated on elevated ground, offering a clear view of the surroundings, which added to its imposing presence.
“The curriculum varies, but of course, they teach the tenets of the faith, as well as medicine and holy magic. Even if you have the aptitude, you can’t use healing magic without training.”
“I see.”
“Some people enroll just to learn medicine or holy magic. Though the tuition is high, those who graduate won’t have trouble finding a job.”
In the former case, there is no cost to enter the school, but after graduation, you will be able to find a job as a priest of the Sandrique School, which is the parent organization of the Sandrique School.
For the latter, those who wish to learn medicine and holy magic must pay tuition fees higher than those at ordinary magic schools.
“There’s a holy magic user in our brigade too, you know? Nana didn’t go to this school, but she did attend a religious school.”
“Nana… The one with purple hair?”
“Yep, she’s a rare adventurer who learned both holy magic and healing magic. She gets a lot of offers from other adventurer teams and nobles, so we can’t let our guard down!”
Of course, everyone would want a rare healer… In my memory, Nana was a mature woman with a gentle, calm demeanor, but it seems she’s quite a famous adventurer.
“So, what was the school Camille graduated from like?”
“You mean Laiosar Magic School? It’s just an ordinary, lower-level magic school.”
“Lower-level? There are different levels of magic schools?”
“Yes, Laiosar Magic School, where I graduated from, is a magic school for ordinary citizens. Most graduates become adventurers or magic soldiers in rural towns. On the other hand, Enfibe Magic Academy, where you hold a Promica Medal, is an upper-level magic school.”
According to Camille, lower-level magic schools are for ordinary citizens. The tuition fees are affordable for commoners, and students usually attend from age 15 for about three years.
Graduates typically find employment as adventurers or magic soldiers in rural areas. Indeed, Camille became an adventurer after graduating from Laiosar Magic School.
“Enfibe Magic Academy is for geniuses or children of nobles. Students at upper-level magic schools generally start learning magic from a young age.”
In contrast, upper-level magic schools like Enfibe Magic Academy are where future military elites or noble employees are trained. It’s also a gathering place for noble children, serving as a social venue.
“So, it’s a school for the nation’s elite…”
“That’s one way to put it.”
It made sense now—if the original owner of the Enfibe Promica Medal I had was the heir of a marquis family, then Camille’s explanation was spot on.
“Lots of people in the capital have a Laiosar Promica Medal, but Enfibe Promica Medals are pretty rare. How did you really get yours?”
“Well…”
Would Camille even believe me if I told her the heir of a marquis family had just walked into the store?
