Aliens and Dates

Chapter 10:  Chapter Eight — The Duplicate Woman.

❝The worst part of having a superpower is when that superpower tells me, all the time, that I'm not good enough.❞

[NARRATOR]

Watching the civilian get further and further away, disappearing into the ruins of what had become the streets of Manhattan — not to mention the countless Chitauri corpses scattered on the asphalt — while turning the corner at a speed that made him question the woman's normality.

The thought of following her crossed the enhanced soldier's mind, almost overcoming his desire to return to another subject; the fear in his expression of leaving her alone was as clear as water itself. Steve didn't know what the blonde was capable of, he didn't know her, so it was obvious that he was afraid when he saw her walk away.

— "Are you tired of looking yet?" — Agent Romanoff asked, interrupting his questions for a moment, a thin layer of sarcasm was noticeable in her question, leaving him a little confused about the reason for her apparent amusement.

Steve was quick to ignore the provocation and went back to thinking about the blonde from a few seconds ago. All his thoughts were filled with concern, and everything about the newest addition to the group: Harleen Frances Quinzel, if his ears hadn't deceived him.

Natasha almost snorted publicly when she realized her leader's obvious interest in the skilled civilian. However, she decided not to comment on anything, letting Steve notice at his own risk.

Raising her right arm, the redhead rubbed her thumb with her middle finger twice, snapping them loudly enough to draw the centenarian soldier's attention to herself.

— "I need a push, Captain. I've had enough of these aliens." — She complained openly, somehow not caring anymore. Exhaustion was already taking over her body, reminding her of her limits, and it wouldn't be long before it became a problem. In the end, Natasha was still human, even with the enhanced serum in her veins, the heavy training, and her personal hell from years ago. — "When I'm in the air, you can go after her."

Steve blinked once, twice after hearing her, coming to his senses with her words, taking on a serious expression. Nodding, the man confirmed with a quick nod of his chin as he turned to the super spy, agreeing to help her.

Rogers looked up at the sky, noticing a pattern in the floating ships of the aliens called Chitauri in a few seconds, then he knew exactly what to do.

Raising the shield, and holding the handle tightly, the Captain asked out loud if that was a good idea. Natasha just took a few deep breaths, looked up, observed the aliens for a quick minute, and nodded twice with her chin in silent affirmation, determined to do what she planned.

There was only one way to know if her theory was correct, and Natasha Romanoff was eager to find out.

— "Yeah…" — She took one last breath into her lungs, preparing to run towards the enhanced soldier now crouched, waiting for her actions. — "It's going to be fun."

Running, the agent jumped on Captain America's shield, gaining the necessary momentum to reach the flat surface of one of the Chitauri ships, easily dislodging the two aliens on board.

Controlling the pilot aggressively, since the alien initially didn't want to cooperate with her, Romanoff, fortunately, managed to make him follow her instructions, taking the path the redhead wanted the Chitauri to take.

For a race of superior beings, coming from outer space, it was quite easy to take them down.

Returning to the battle, Steve used his shield again to take down a small group of aliens, killing two of them with ease, waiting for an opening so he could go after the currently missing civilian, worried that she would end up getting hurt since she was no longer receiving his support.

Rogers didn't like the way things were going at all, but he knew they needed to win. Or, at least, to find a way to close the portal, which would stop dumping aliens after aliens into the city streets.

Good God, how he missed the fights of his time.

— "Captain, I have more news." — Clint Barton's voice took Steve out of his fighting rhythm, making him stop as he punched another Chitauri, feeling the familiar burning sensation dominate the flesh of his fingers with the effort. However, he did his best to ignore the pain, knowing that the injuries would start to heal on their own in a short time.

— "What news?" — Rogers asked, pausing for a quick minute, taking a deep breath, looking around to make sure there was no element of surprise for him. As he did so, he relaxed a percentage.

— "We have other help. Actually, I'm not sure what it is, but I know we have help."

— "How are you sure about that?"

— "Well…" — Barton seemed a little afraid to say it, but he did it anyway: — "Clones of a woman keep appearing, especially on the West and North sides of the city." — He informed, his tone serious enough for Captain America to be sure that this was not a joke. — "The clones are protecting the adults and children, some are fighting the aliens, but on all sides, they are dying at an alarming rate."

To say that Steve was confused could easily be considered an understatement.

Of all the things that could appear on this day… it wasn't enough to have a witch, two trained spies, one of whom fought with arrows, a Norse God, a billionaire with a technological suit, a civilian with strange abilities and resistance, not to mention himself, a soldier who had been frozen in time, there was still someone in the middle of all this chaos with the ability to multiply?

— "Fuck." — Before he could hold it in, the curse word had already left his lips; clear, fast, and without any prior warning. Steve only hoped it hadn't been shared over the communicator, but something told him it had happened anyway.

It didn't matter. One more or less curse word wasn't the most important thing at the moment, the enhanced soldier repeated inside his mind.

— "Which side do you think these... clones are coming from?" — He asked, feeling the word sound a little strange on his tongue, but still trying to sound as if he hadn't realized what had come out of his mouth seconds ago.

— "Did the popsicle just say a bad word?" — Stark asked, looking very amused and interested in this fact.

Steve was quick to ignore it, somehow already expecting something like this to happen, especially from the philanthropist.

— "He's a soldier, not a prude." — Morana Isleen's tired voice, but also with a layer of amusement, cut off any chance Tony would have of continuing the provocation. It was almost like seeing her having to be the two adults in the relationship, even though she had also found what had just happened amusing.

Even so, Rogers made a mental note to thank her later, in case they won that invasion.

— "I know this pattern from somewhere…" — Clint's whispered voice sounded through the group's communicator, but most were quick to ignore it, returning to the fight when they realized it wasn't directed at them. — "If I had to bet, I'd say to your right. There have been more clones active in the last five minutes, so I think they might be appearing from this side. If you find any clone looking very tired, or very dirty, there's a good chance she's the creator."

— "Right." — Steve agreed, determined to do it. Unlike before, since Romanoff was after the Scepter and Loki, and naturally couldn't go after the new 'helper', he would have to do it. — "Keep me informed if any more helpers decide to show up."

Agent Barton's confirmation through the communicator was all that was needed for Rogers, who didn't take long to run in the direction the archer had designated, ready to find the new mutant who had appeared.

Honestly, could this day get any weirder?

Yes. Unfortunately, this day could get any weirder.

Steve looked in shock at the woman with Filipino features a few steps in front of him, with alien blood (or whatever that blue liquid was that the Chitauris made to release when they were injured) on her face, on her arms, and an arm of one of the aliens in one of her hands.

There was a pile of bodies of space beings on both sides of her body, revealing that she was the one responsible for killing more than fifty, possibly more, aliens in those last few minutes.

In addition, a family was running to the other side, followed by more clones of the woman in front of her, clearly looking to protect the family in case more Chitauris made gifts like plagues — which, if she were, to be honest, was exactly what they were to anyone who was trying to help. However, unlike her, the clones were perfectly fine.

The woman was tired, it was clear from her chest, which rose and fell in uniform movements. However, her face somehow seemed calm, serious, and rigid, as if she had complete control of whatever she was doing at that moment.

When the silence around them was unbearable, the brunette's voice finally sounded, before the soldier could do so since the blond parted his lips to address her: — "What the hell are you doing here, Captain?" — She asked, not bothering to seem sympathetic or kind, revealing her frivolous emotions in her question, as simple as it was.

That was enough to make Rogers' eyebrows furrow, not exactly appreciating the rude treatment from others. — "Excuse me? — The blond asked back, ignoring the harshness with ease, confusion covering his expressive lines.

— "You were supposed to be with Harley. You don't belong here."

After all, what the hell was this day turning into?
