Chapter 72: Chapter 72
"You—you want to treat him?" Azriel looked at Damien, his brows were twisted as he said to Damien, "Boy, have you lost your mind?"
"Have I?" Damien pointed at the beastman on the bed. "He has lost a lot of blood, if I don't treat him, even with the replenishing ointment will not be enough to save his life. Because the rate at which he is losing blood is faster than the rate of recovery."
Azriel glared at him, "You truly have lost your mind. You want to save this beastman? Do you even know where he works and what he does for a living?"
"Does it matter," Damien walked over to the bed where Sigurd was lying and activated [Eye of Observation.].
Without looking at Azriel he continued to speak, "No matter what he does or how he makes his living has little to do with me. All I care about is whether they can pay for my treatment."
As he finished speaking he raised his head and turned to look At Adikus who looked grateful and relieved. "We can pay for this treatment." It didn't matter, Sigurd was like a brother to him, the two of them were from the same tribe and had grown up together.
For the sake of saving his brother, Adikus was willing to do anything.
"Preposterous!" Azriel cried indignantly. "Mad! Absolutely mad! Do you even know the meaning of saving this man, boy? It means that not only will your reputation be lost, no one will treat you seriously. If you want to succeed, listen to me and leave this man to his fate."
"The officials and the higher-ups will not like to be touched by your hands if you touch a man of his position." he glanced at Sigurd with a disgusted expression before saying, "Even the people in the guild would stray away from your path."
As if he was afraid that Damien would not believe him, Azriel looked at him with a stern expression. He was afraid that Damien would not take him seriously. "One of my colleagues, Oberon, was a fool like you. Just like you, he fell for the emotional trap of an untouchable and do you know what happened? He was boycotted."
"After he touched the untouchable, no one wanted to let him treat him," Azriel shook his head and sighed melancholically, "What a talented healer he was — and yet he was ruined by someone like them."
Azriel despised this lower-ranked beastman and the untouchables. They clearly knew what would happen to a person who helped them and yet they would come and beg, without a care for the person who would lose their entire future if they were to save them.
They were selfish in their actions, so what was wrong with him protecting his own interests?
Damien paused in his actions. He was surprised to find out that the healers and the people of this world cared so much about class and hierarchy. For him nothing mattered more than saving the lives of those who were in danger, it didn't matter what the status of the patient in the society, he would treat them nonetheless.
"I see," Damien nodded after he finished listening to Azriel. "However, I cannot sit still and not do anything when a life is being lost in front of me. As a doctor, as long as someone asks me to save them, I will do my part."
After he finished speaking, he looked at the information displayed in front of him. He needed to reconnect the blood vessels, and there was also a trace of venom—
"Lord Damien, are you really going to save this beastman?" Azriel was stunned. When he relayed what happened to Oberon to Damien, he thought that this young man would understand what lies in front of him if he were to continue with this treatment.
However, despite his warnings, Damien was stubborn enough to continue the treatment. Did he not value his future or did he not take his words to heart?
A surge of anger rose in Azriel's heart as he glanced at Damien coldly. He was being kind by telling Damien the consequences of saving this beastman but this man didn't take his words to heart at all.
"Lord Damien, did you hear what I said?" Azriel asked just as Damien drew his instruments from the system. He wasn't new to this surgery, though it was slightly difficult for the healers of this world to heal this wound as it was not a surface-level wound, Damien could treat it within a matter of seconds.
But there were a few pieces of medical equipment that he needed, he looked at the fame points at the corner of the screen and sighed. He collected these points with difficulty and now he needed to use them again.
"Don't be dejected, host," said Dan when he saw Damien looking at the price of a retractor shown on the screen. "The more people you treat the more your fame will rise, soon these points won't even matter to you."
"With a greedy system like this? I wonder if that day will ever come," Damien sneered as he pressed the small button under the retractor purchased it from the shop and placed it in inventory.
"Lord Damien, did you hear what I said just now?"
Damien sighed and turned to look at Azriel who stood behind him, "My dear healer, I did hear you and I think I made it very clear that I will be treating this man irrespective of the consequences."
"Healers like you can sleep well after ignoring a life and letting a person die but it will weigh on my conscience. What can I do? My heart is bigger and softer than yours, once it becomes stone cold, maybe I will take your advice?"
Azriel's face turned pouchy and red. He glared at Damien feeling even more humiliated.
He breathed heavily and after a short pause said to Damien in a threatening voice, "Fine since you are so sure, then do as you may please but I am telling you that in case you fail to save this man then it would be better if you walk out of this guild on your own if not —I will relay it to the rest of the guild members.
I believe that once they know of this, they will ask you to leave …what am I even talking about?"
He snarled and contemptuously snorted, "They will throw you out of here."
