Chapter 35
Mu Ci was currently in the VIP ward of the Gu Family Private Hospital, enjoying excellent conditions and high-quality hospital food. Despite this, Gu Huai remained concerned and had hired two nutritionists to prepare special meals for Mu Ci.
On one occasion, Gu Huai entered the ward carrying freshly made bone soup while Mu Ci was engaged in conversation with Bai Ling.
Bai Ling, though highly proficient in network investigation and financial security, came off as a bit foolish. Seeing him, Mu Ci couldn’t help but recall the large white dog he had as a child.
After becoming wary of Jiang Wenjing, Bai Ling often joined in for some light-hearted moments, creating a positive impression on Mu Ci.
Bai Ling was excelled at making people laugh. When Gu Huai entered, Bai Ling was quietly gossiping about their boss to Mu Ci, drawing exaggerated scenarios that made Mu Ci purse his lips and chuckle.
For the first time in days, Gu Huai saw him so happy and was momentarily stunned. Standing at the door, he watched Mu Ci’s smile.
He looked even better when he smiled, Gu Huai thought. Despite Mu Ci’s temperament during moments of anger or sadness, Gu Huai found solace in his smiles.
Bai Ling continued to share amusing stories from their childhood, inquiring about any interesting moments between Mu Ci and his siblings.
Bai Ling regretted his words immediately. In Mu Ci’s world, brothers were like wolves and tigers, lacking warmth and filled with schemes against one another.
However, Mu Ci smiled softly, “I have a little sister. Although she was not born from my concubine mother. She has a very good relationship with me. She…”
Yet, when Mu Ci looked up, he saw Gu Huai standing at the door. The smile faded instantly, his words halted abruptly, and his thin lips pressed tightly into a straight line.
Gu Huai walked in calmly, placed the lunch box by the bedside, and greeted him with a smile. “Continue, what about your sister?”
Mu Ci turned away, showing no intention of continuing the conversation with him.
Gu Huai casually commented, “I also had a cousin who was quite annoying when I was a child. Does your wound still hurt? Let me see.”
Attempting to check Mu Ci’s recovery, Gu Huai reached out to untie his clothes. However, Mu Ci snapped Gu Huai’s hand away as if facing a formidable opponent.
The loud sound echoed in the empty ward, startling Bai Ling. Fearfully, he looked at Gu Huai’s face. Indeed, Gu Huai’s expression darkened, but he gritted his teeth and forced a laugh, as if he hadn’t just been rebuffed in front of others.
“Fine, don’t look if you don’t want to. Why are you so tense?”
Gu Huai then sat down by the bed, took the lunch box, and asked, “Are you hungry? Would you like some soup? I had the chef at home specially prepare it. You used to like it a lot.”
Mu Ci regarded Gu Huai with suspicion, as if meeting him for the first time.
When a spoonful of hot soup was handed to his mouth, Mu Ci couldn’t bring himself to refuse. He took the spoon and lunch box, whispering, “I will drink it myself.”
Satisfied, Gu Huai ruffled Mu Ci’s hair and chuckled, “Be good, finish it all. I’ll take you for a walk in the garden later. It’s been several days, and you haven’t left the ward yet, have you?”
After a brief hesitation, Mu Ci let out a soft hum.
Gu Huai particularly enjoyed Mu Ci’s obedient demeanor and couldn’t resist leaning in for a kiss. At that moment, Mu Ci was earnestly sipping soup, paying no attention to him.
The background window displayed brightness and clarity, with dancing shadows of trees and sunlight streaming through the glass.
Gu Huai gazed affectionately at Mu Ci, placing his right hand on Mu Ci’s shoulders, while Mu Ci lowered his head, stirring soup with a spoon.
The two of them, Gu Huai and Mu Ci, looked exceptionally good. At first glance, they appeared to be a perfect couple, like a pair of sketches. Only Bai Ling, seated beside them, seemed to have a question mark on his face.
.
.
The subsequent days unfolded ordinarily. Mu Ci resided in the VIP ward, sleeping until noon, followed by a walk in the small garden with two bodyguards. In the afternoon, he underwent body checks and participated in rehabilitation exercises.
Gu Huai visited him almost every night but couldn’t stay the night, he was very busy man and had countless things to do. Occasionally he would hold Mu Ci’s hands but refrained from any intimate contact. According to Doctor Jiang, despite the non-serious nature of the fracture, any bump could be detrimental. So, when bedtime arrived, Gu Huai took advantage of Mu Ci’s sleep, offering a secret kiss, pinching his fingertips, and then retiring to another bed.
Two plainclothes bodyguards stationed themselves at the ward’s entrance. Gu Huai informed Mu Ci that they were there to protect him, ready to follow any orders he might give. However, Mu Ci understood that this was simply a guise for keeping an eye on him.
After the escape experience, Gu Huai no longer underestimated Mu Ci as before, and the bodyguards comprehended that this was no ordinary fiancée —he was treated as a captive.
Even during his strolled downstairs, he was closely shadowed by guards, fearing if they let him go, it might lead to Mu Ci suddenly plunged himself into the river in anger.
Mu Ci was fully aware that he was essentially imprisoned, yet he remained neither angry nor resentful. He continued his routine of eating, sleeping, using his phone, and taking short walks, seemingly unfazed by the circumstances.
Gu Huai was very happy with Mu Ci’s new behavior, he thought after all the cares these days Mu Ci finally accepted him. He was very happy and smiling all day long, making his female subordinates blushed at him.
But that was not the case, Mu Ci endured it because Zheng Xuran visited him two weeks ago.
Mu Ci was surprised by Zheng Xuran’s unexpected visit. They had only met once, and that encounter had been awkward and complicated. It was uncertain whether they could be considered friends.
Despite this, Zheng Xuran came to visit Mu Ci alone, carrying seasonal fruits and cakes. Mu Ci felt touched by the gesture, knowing that in this lonely world, expressing gratitude for such kindness was essential.
The Gu family’s bodyguard recognized Zheng Xuran, so after consulting Gu Huai, they permitted his entry.
.
When Zheng Xuran entering the room and placing things on the bedside, Zheng Xuran nodded to Mu Ci, “Would you like an apple?”
Without waiting for Mu Ci’s response, Zheng Xuran produced another round and tender apple, beginning to peel it.
The long and thin apple skin slowly hung down. Mu Ci stared at the hand holding the fruit knife with a complicated expression, a bit like a force-stuffed duck.
He wanted to say that he had just done eating and still very full. He really couldn’t eat anything else. But Zheng Xuran handed over the peeled apple, Mu Ci couldn’t refuse him so he forced himself to take a small bite.
He looked at Mu Ci, his eating sound filling the room with a peculiar quietness. In the midst of the silence, Zheng Xuran suddenly spoke up, “Do you want to escape?”
