Chapter 192: Once and for All
Ordinary people have an instinctive fear of law enforcement.
Before Lin Wenjing could react, she was sandwiched between two police officers and immediately plunged into panic, struggling and crying, "It's not my fault, I didn't want to come here, they coerced me to come."
"It was me who didn't want to stay with Lu Liang anymore, I was the one who initiated the divorce, it has nothing to do with Lu Liang, please let me go."
Lin Wenjing cried her eyes out, regretting her decisions deeply, she thought Lu Liang was just wealthy, never realizing he also had such connections.
She exposed herself, hoping only that Lu Liang would spare her.
In public, able to command the police officers, what inhuman treatment would she encounter once at the police station?
Thinking of her past interactions with Lu Liang and his family, she was truly frightened.
Lu Liang seemed indifferent, smiling as he approached the police captain while Wen Chao quietly introduced him and his position.
Lu Liang smiled, "Captain Liu, hello, the banquet at home is about to start, why don't I have Secretary Wen accompany you first, and I'll come over in the afternoon?"
Although he didn't know whom Little Wang had contacted, a county official outweighs the immediate manager, and the captain, who leads police across several towns and villages, deserved respect.
"That's fine, it's not a big deal anyway, Mr. Lu. We'll be going then, you carry on."
Captain Liu's face broke into a smile, obviously pleased, and he even bowed to offer his congratulations before leaving, "A joyous housewarming, may good luck follow."
"Thank you for your kind words."
The crowd automatically made way, Lu Liang walked to the door, watching the law enforcement vehicles drive away.
Suddenly, the atmosphere seemed a bit too quiet, the guests still immersed in shock.
"Third Uncle, Uncle Chun, you all too, don't just stand there, please take your seats and let the feast begin."
With a smile, Lu Liang picked up the cigarettes on the table and distributed them in order from the older to the younger generation.
Brother-in-law Luo Haitong, too, upon receiving a cue from Lu Ya's eyes, took out cigarettes to help entertain the guests.
Soon after, the lively atmosphere returned, though people still occasionally stole glances at Lu Liang.
In their village of slightly over a thousand residents, it seemed a significant figure had emerged.
Lu Liang made a round in the courtyard, greeted friends and family, then headed back inside.
Six tables were set up, five outside and one in the living room, the main table.
His mother, feeling sympathetic, tentatively asked, "Liang, what are you planning to do about Wenjing and Juan?"
"What else can I do but scare them a bit, to deter them from coming back?"
Lu Liang picked up some noodles with chopsticks; he especially enjoyed the noodles steamed under crabs, so flavorful.
"That's for the best."
His mother's face lit up with joy, her mood greatly improved.
After today's event, Lu Liang had finally cleared his name, no longer labeled as someone who abandoned his wife when she fell out of favor.
His father, also in a good mood, didn't care that it was only midday, poured a shot of white liquor, and clinked glasses with his son-in-law.
Lu Ya, holding her young daughter, was peeling shrimp for her; hearing this, she glanced at Lu Liang but said nothing.
After the luncheon, Lu Ya carried her daughter back upstairs to their room, chuckling, "Children get sleepy after eating."
"That means she's growing." Lu Liang rested awhile, had a few cups of tea, then prepared to visit the police station.
"What do you plan to do with them?" Lu Ya asked quietly.
"Nowadays, it's a society ruled by law, what I say doesn't count," Lu Liang said with a smile.
Lu Ya hesitated then sighed, "Don't go too far."
"Just teaching them a lesson."
Lu Liang had just phoned Wen Chao, learning what could be done with these people; at most, they could be detained for fifteen days for causing trouble.
He stepped outside, bumping into the village chief, who was all smiles, "Liang, the community center is finished, do you want to check it out?"
"Uncle Bo, I trust your work, maybe next time, I have to step out."
He had heard over dinner that the community center, invested with two million at the start of the year, was partly embezzled.
The contractor was the chief's brother-in-law, but he wasn't too bothered; after all, generosity can pacify many an issue.
Today's performance was satisfactory to him; at the very least, no one would dare harass his family in his absence.
The village chief, all smiles, responded, "Then you go ahead and get busy."
Lu Liang, joined by Fang Shiyu, drove to the town's police station.
Chief Zhou's surname was Zhou, and upon learning that Lu Liang had come, he personally accompanied him to take his statement.
"Nowadays, there are too many people who are blinded by greed."
Chief Zhou was visibly indignant, firmly taking Lu Liang's side.
Lu Liang smiled, "Fortunately, we have Chief Zhou and our hardworking frontline police comrades."
"Mr. Lu, you give us too much credit; it's simply our duty," Chief Zhou responded righteously.
As they talked, they didn't avoid Lin Wenjing and her daughter, and Lu Liang was telling them not to mess with him without a good reason.
This matter would pass with just a few days of detention, but if there were a next time, Lu Liang would make their lives perpetually miserable.
Seeing how well Lu Liang got along with the chief, Lin Wenjing's face turned ashen, and she resigned herself to her fate.
Yet, she had one lingering question, one that, if unanswered, would not let her rest in peace even in death, "Liang, we were once husband and wife; can you tell me if you became wealthy before or after our divorce?"
"Does it matter?" Lu Liang asked with a chuckle.
"It matters a lot to me."
"After the divorce."
Lu Liang left them with that response and walked away.
Lin Wenjing fell silent, unable to hold back her tears; she completely lost her spirit and slumped to the ground, powerless.
Lu Liang sighed, but before leaving, his heart softened, "Chief Zhou, let the mother and daughter go tonight."
"Right, it's not a major issue."
Chief Zhou nodded, a hint of respect flashing in his eyes.
Indeed, none who succeed are pushovers; even in dealing with his ex-wife, he was ruthless.
This time, a total of seven people were detained, including the mother-daughter pair and their friends and family.
By doing this, Lu Liang undoubtedly put them through the wringer, as the main schemer got away, while the accomplices were detained.
The censure from friends and family alone could drown them, and they likely wouldn't dare show their faces in their hometown again.
It was a meticulous plan to cut them off for good.
After leaving the police station, Lu Liang drove around the village and saw the community center he had sponsored.
Covering three acres, it had a basketball court, a table tennis room, and dozens of other sports facilities.
The village kids, under the blazing sun, were freely sweating on the field, filling the air with bursts of laughter and cheer.
Lu Liang's lips curled into a satisfied smile; managing to achieve all this with two million was quite impressive.
Even if there was greed, it was minimal.
Back at home,
Lu Liang went up to the third floor of his new house for the first time.
The first and second floors housed his parents and sister's rooms, while the third floor was his private space, featuring three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a living room, without a kitchen, furnished with only the best brands.
Lu Liang lay on the couch, squinting his eyes, feeling a peace that the big city lacked.
Gradually, the sun set.
Lu Liang heard a crisp ringing of bells, and a chubby little hand patted his cheek, "Uncle, wake up, it's time for dinner."
Lu Ya stood at the door with a loving smile, letting her little daughter bounce on Lu Liang.
She asked with a smile, "Are you satisfied?"
"Definitely satisfied."
Lu Liang rubbed his eyes and suddenly, playfully, grabbed his niece under his arm and ran downstairs with her, "Off we go, let's have dinner."
Their laughter, crisp as bells, echoed down the spacious corridor, and Lu Ya, smiling, followed them downstairs.
Having stayed at home for two days, during which Lu Liang visited the municipal office to chat with leaders in charge of business operations.
"Leader, if there's a chance in the future, I'd definitely invest in some industries back home."
Apart from real estate or man-made marvels, Lu Liang couldn't think of anything else to invest in.
He could only outline a potential opportunity to the city's leaders for now; the chances were there, just not yet ripe.
The leaders were understanding, considering that as a small city without specialties, nestled between the Yangtze River Delta and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau,
it was hard to retain talent or industry and develop anything, especially since Lu Liang worked in finance.
Having the intention to think of the hometown in the future was enough to satisfy them.
