Chapter 53
When they first got together, Shen Li didn’t like to call Jiang Shiyu by his name, as it felt too impersonal. Since Jiang Shiyu didn’t have a nickname, Shen Li decided to give him one himself.
“Little Treasure.”
Shen Li was very pleased with this nickname, feeling it perfectly suited Jiang Shiyu—cute, well-behaved, and endearing. However, Jiang Shiyu wasn’t quite used to it. Every time Shen Li called him that, he would blush and stay embarrassed for a long time. Later, when they were at home, Bai Yun heard Shen Li using the nickname and found it quite affectionate, so she began calling him “Little Treasure” as well.
Despite his initial resistance, he gradually got used to the nickname because it was used so frequently.
After the car accident and memory loss, Shen Li had occasionally used the nickname “Little Treasure” while teasing him, having heard it from Bai Yun. Each time, Jiang Shiyu would be momentarily stunned, then lower his head in silence. Shen Li thought he was just shy.
Now, sitting in the hospital room, Jiang Shiyu was stunned, unsure if he was hallucinating or if his ears were malfunctioning, as he heard Shen Li call him “Little Treasure” with the same tone from before.
Seeing Jiang Shiyu, who had become like a statue, Shen Li’s eyes revealed a mix of complex emotions. He spoke again, louder and clearer, “Little Treasure.”
In the next moment, he saw tears gush from Jiang Shiyu’s eyes. He had never seen him cry so intensely, as if he was shedding all the grievances and pain of the past six months.
He sat up from the bed, wanting to touch the weeping Jiang Shiyu, but hesitated with his hand hovering in the air.
Yes, he remembered everything. All the forgotten memories belonging to the two of them came flooding back.
Similarly, he hadn’t forgotten the events of the past six months. Everything he had done to Jiang Shiyu after the accident was vivid in his mind.
The “Little Treasure” he had once cherished, sworn to protect for a lifetime, had endured countless grievances and tears because of him in these past six months.
He felt as if his chest had been hollowed out, leaving only an empty, bloody mess.
Jiang Shiyu was crying uncontrollably, shaking as he did so. He remained silent, tears streaming down his face like a continuous stream.
His small, delicate chin trembled as tears pooled on his clothes, spreading into a damp patch. Suddenly, his breathing grew rapid, his face turning from pale to red.
Shen Li was alarmed. He threw off the covers, got out of bed, and held him in his arms, his hand on his back as he gently soothed him, “Little Treasure, breathe slowly, breathe slowly. Don’t rush.”
Jiang Shiyu, frail and shivering, leaned into his embrace. His rapid breathing resembled an asthma attack, struggling to catch his breath, making it a frightening sight.
Shen Li held him steadily, his expression calm and collected, “Little Treasure, listen to me. Breathe out, breathe in. Good, very good. Again, breathe out, breathe in. You’re doing great, slowly, slowly.”
Under Shen Li’s persistent comfort, Jiang Shiyu’s breathing gradually started to stabilize. Shen Li’s hand never stopped moving along his back, and a thin layer of sweat appeared on his forehead.
Once Jiang Shiyu’s breathing was under control, Shen Li pressed the call button for the nurse. The nurse quickly arrived and was stunned by the scene.
“Please call the doctor for me. Thank you.”
Fortunately, the nurse reacted quickly and summoned the doctor. Just two hours ago, the doctor had examined Shen Li, and now the roles were reversed.
“What happened?”
“Doctor, please check. He has acute asthma. His heart just underwent surgery, and the emotional stress caused difficulty in breathing. The allergy medication is…”
Shen Li knew every detail about Jiang Shiyu’s condition. Before the doctor could say anything, he had already described Jiang Shiyu’s symptoms, allergy history, and everything related.
The doctor couldn’t help but be impressed by Shen Li’s knowledge, which seemed more professional than his own.
After a thorough examination with a stethoscope, the doctor wrote a prescription for medication and asked the nurse to fetch it.
“There’s a vacant bed in the next room. Let this young man stay there for now. Where are your family members? With the current situation, who will take care of whom?”
Shen Li vaguely mentioned that family members would arrive soon. The doctor didn’t say much, reminding him to rest well and advising him to keep his emotions stable.
The door to the ward was soon closed. As Jiang Shiyu slowly regained his composure, he propped himself up on the bed, trying to get up. Shen Li frowned and pulled him back.
He then noticed that Jiang Shiyu’s clothes were completely soaked and his face was dirty, with traces of blood behind his ears and neck.
The clothes had been worn for a long time, and he could feel the coldness of his body against his own. Ignoring his own grogginess, he quickly placed Jiang Shiyu on the bed, removed his wet clothes, and covered him with a blanket.
He then checked his forehead, relieved to find he didn’t have a fever but worried that he might get sick during the night. Previously, whenever Jiang Shiyu had worn less clothing or caught a chill during a change of seasons, he would inevitably have a fever and feel unwell.
“I’ll go get some warm water to clean you up. You just stay here and lie down.”
As he turned to leave, Jiang Shiyu grabbed his hand.
Turning back, he saw Jiang Shiyu sitting up in bed, the white blanket falling off his shoulders, exposing his pale, smooth upper body and two rosy points.
Shen Li…
“Shen Li.” Jiang Shiyu slowly called his name, his voice hoarse and breaking, sounding like a cracked bell.
Shen Li pressed Jiang Shiyu’s shoulders, making him lie down, and pulled the blanket over them both.
“Let’s talk about it later when you’re better. You need to clean yourself up and change into dry clothes, or you’ll feel uncomfortable tonight.”
Jiang Shiyu still held onto his hand, unwilling to let go. Shen Li had no choice but to compromise. He lifted the blanket and lay down beside him. The bed was a bit cramped for two grown men, but he held him close to warm him up, his hands continuously rubbing his arms and stomach.
After an unknown amount of time, Jiang Shiyu, whose crying had dulled his senses, seemed to regain some awareness and tried to get out of bed.
“Little Treasure, don’t move. Where are you going?”
“I’m going to the bed next door. The doctor said you need to stay here and rest.”
Shen Li laughed softly, “If you stay still and don’t move, I’ll be resting here with you. If you keep moving, it will only make things worse.”
Hearing this, Jiang Shiyu stopped his restless movements. Shen Li wrapped him up in his arms, like a snugly toy—soft and tender.
Both of them, one recovering from emotional distress and acute asthma, lay in the bed. Despite their thoughts racing, their weakened bodies couldn’t hold out, and they fell asleep in the awkward, uncomfortable position.
When they woke up again, Jiang Shiyu was lying alone in the middle of the bed, the room was empty. He forced himself to wake up despite his discomfort and saw Shen Li entering the room as he was trying to get out of bed.
“Little Treasure.”
He usually needed some time to fully wake up and adjust. Today, he was forced to wake up quickly, and although his body was awake, his mind was still fuzzy. Hearing someone call his name, he sluggishly turned his head. Upon seeing Shen Li, it took him a while to react.
He finally spoke slowly, “Where did you go?” His tone was somewhat aggrieved.
Shen Li immediately noticed something was wrong, realizing he had gotten up right after waking. He quickly walked over and pushed him back onto the bed.
“The doctor asked me to get a check-up. I saw you sleeping soundly when I left, so I didn’t wake you.”
Jiang Shiyu, like a snail, shrank and pulled Shen Li’s sleeve urgently. “What did the doctor say? Are you okay?”
Even though his head was still muddled, as soon as he heard about the check-up, he was instinctively worried, like an automatic reaction.
Shen Li felt a pang of sympathy and sadness.
The curtains in the hospital room hadn’t been drawn last night, and the sunlight was glaring. Shen Li used his hand to shield Jiang Shiyu’s eyes, and his vision instantly went dark, but he felt a warm, gentle touch on his eyelids.
“The doctor said it’s nothing serious, just a mild concussion. The accident had caused some residual blood clots in your brain that pressed on the nerves, leading to partial amnesia. The recent bump to your head inadvertently dispersed the clots, so everything is fine now.”
Shen Li delivered this information all at once. Jiang Shiyu, still dazed, took a long time to process it. After a long silence, Shen Li felt something moist in his palm. Tears were seeping through his fingers.
When he moved his hand away, he saw Jiang Shiyu’s eyes, which were completely wet, with tears making his black pupils look like they were covered by a transparent glass layer—beautiful but fragile.
Deeper emotions were hidden in those eyes—grievance, joy, sadness, fear—all mixed together. Shen Li couldn’t bear to look too long, his heart feeling like it had been split open.
“Little Treasure, I’m sorry.”
His apology felt pale and insufficient, whether before or after the amnesia. A mere apology could never cover the harm he had caused Jiang Shiyu.
Jiang Shiyu cried uncontrollably. He had long accepted that Shen Li would never recover his memory, never remember the time they spent together. After all, Shen Li, regardless of the time period, was still the same person. Forgetting the past didn’t matter because they had a long future ahead of them.
But now, he had recovered his memory and remembered everything.
Jiang Shiyu didn’t know how to face this. It seemed like fate was always playing tricks on him, forcing him to start over repeatedly. His mother had left when his memories were still fresh, so his father’s love and care were doubled. Later, after losing his father and coming to the Shen family, Shen’s parents gave him a new home, their love and care even surpassing their own son Shen Li’s. Facing a stranger, Shen Li not only accepted him but also gave him so much love. He felt that despite the regrets in his life, he was surrounded by love and considered himself lucky. But just when he thought everything was perfect, Shen Li’s accident and amnesia had been the most painful loss for someone like him, who had always lacked a sense of security. Each time he experienced love, fate would swiftly take it away.
He longed for an abundance of love, but the more he cared, the more painful the loss would be.
Having received all of Shen Li’s love, he had never given up during his amnesia because he loved him too.
But in the end, after exhausting all his strength to start over, fate made him return to the beginning again.
