Chapter 3
Shen Li had actually woken up before Jiang Shiyu came in. He looked around at the unfamiliar environment and tried to recall what had happened, but his memory was fragmented, and thinking about it gave him a terrible headache.
Just as he was about to press the bell to call someone in, a figure sneaked in like a thief, pushing the door open quietly and slipping inside. After entering, the figure stood at the doorway without making any further moves, one hand clutching their chest, panting in small breaths as if resting.
Shen Li narrowed his eyes. In the dimly lit room, he could only vaguely see an outline. What kind of hospital was this, letting anyone sneak into his ward?
“Who is it?”
As soon as he spoke, the “thief” at the door reacted like a cat caught stealing, hair standing on end. The figure slowly turned around, wide eyes showing terror in the moonlight. In the next moment, tears gathered in those eyes, spilling out like a kite with a broken string.
He was caught off guard by the crying. The thief, caught in the act, was the one who started crying first.
“Shen Li, wuwu… Shen Li, you’re awake.” Jiang Shiyu sobbed, his small face streaked with tears. Calling his name, he started walking towards him.
With a sudden click, the room lit up.
Shen Li turned his head to avoid the glaring light, and Jiang Shiyu also raised a hand to shield his eyes.
“Ah, how come there’s an extra person in the room?”
A nurse, carrying a tray of medical supplies, walked in and was startled to see Jiang Shiyu at the door. Then, noticing that Shen Li on the bed was awake, she quickly used her intercom to call for help.
“The patient in Room 01 is awake. Get Dr. Li over here quickly.”
Jiang Shiyu didn’t even get a chance to speak to him before being pushed aside by the doctors and nurses who streamed in. Small and thin, he went unnoticed by everyone.
He pressed his lips together, staying silent, and watched intently as the doctors examined Shen Li. Only after the doctor said everything was normal did he breathe a sigh of relief.
Then his throat started to itch, and he tried to suppress it, covering his mouth and hoping to cough quietly without drawing attention. But once he started coughing, he couldn’t stop, and it became more and more intense.
Now, it was impossible for him to go unnoticed. Everyone in the ward turned their eyes on him, all wondering the same thing: When did this boy come in?
Fortunately, the doctors and nurses recognized him, so they didn’t mistake him for a thief like Shen Li did.
Seeing that he could barely stand while coughing, a nurse quickly stepped forward to support him.
Jiang Shiyu, unaccustomed to being touched by others, wanted to say it wasn’t necessary, but his body betrayed him, unable to stand even while leaning against the wall. He had no choice but to let the nurse help him.
“Young master, why are you here in the middle of the night? Didn’t we tell you to stay in bed and rest?” A doctor walked over, instructed the nurse to get a glass of water for him, and used a stethoscope to listen to his heartbeat.
“Quick, take him back.”
He slowly took a couple of sips of water and gradually regained his composure. His beautiful face was flushed from coughing, his dark eyes glistening with moisture, evoking pity.
Ignoring the doctor’s words, he lifted his head to look at the bed, meeting Shen Li’s gaze. Shen Li’s features were sharp and well-defined, especially his eyes, which were long and piercing.
When he looked at someone without expression, it was like a dangerous animal from the depths of the forest.
Seeing his tightly pressed lips and expressionless face, Jiang Shiyu thought he was angry at him for sneaking into his room in the middle of the night. Back at home, when they slept in separate rooms, he often liked to sneak into Shen Li’s room at night.
Shen Li would get very upset when he found out but couldn’t bring himself to scold or hit him. Instead, he would have to warm Jiang Shiyu’s cold feet against his chest; otherwise, he would feel unwell the next day.
He stared at Shen Li’s face, his cat-like eyes blinking, growing slightly teary. In a soft voice, he murmured, “Shen Li, don’t be angry.”
The room was full of people, so Jiang Shiyu only softened his voice to call out to him, not daring to act too affectionately towards him. Usually, when he called him like this, he would stop being angry.
But Shen Li, leaning against the bed, gazed at him with eyes as dark as the abyss, without any hint of emotion, as if looking at a stranger. He stared at Jiang Shiyu for a few seconds, his brows slightly furrowed.
A slow, puzzled voice asked, “Who are you?”
News of the car accident and subsequent amnesia of Shen Li, the sole heir of the Shen Group, spread rapidly. On the internet, there are no secrets, and gossipers are especially keen on the private lives of the wealthy. The recent trending topic that had just died down surged back up with new keywords.
The discussions below were fervent. The news spread quickly, and by the time it had circulated widely, it had transformed into a tale of the young master Shen Li eloping with his boyfriend from a common family, suffering brain damage in an accident, and becoming an idiot.
Some even started debating who should inherit the Shen family’s billion-dollar fortune, with suggestions ranging from the Shen couple adopting a child to the absurd idea of having another child.
Amidst the ongoing rumors, the Shen Group’s PR department intervened to put an end to the online farce.
In the hospital, the neurologist that Shen Qinglin had specially flown in from abroad examined Shen Li and concluded the same as the doctors at the Hospital: Shen Li suffered from segmental amnesia due to a traumatic brain injury, a common post-concussion syndrome.
Standing anxiously by her son’s side, Bai Yun asked, “When will his memory recover? Will there be any lasting effects on his brain?”
The doctor shook his head. “There won’t be significant impacts on his brain. He just needs to rest well for the time being.
As for memory recovery…” After a brief hesitation, he continued, “I can’t give a precise timeline for memory recovery.
It could take a week, a month, a year, or he might never regain those memories. Once he’s discharged, exposing him to familiar environments as much as possible could help with recovery.”
Upon hearing this, everyone felt a mix of relief and concern. They were reassured that his brain wouldn’t suffer lasting damage but were simultaneously troubled by the possibility that his memory might never return.
Bai Yun discreetly wiped the moisture from the corner of her eye. Her gaze swept to the door, where she noticed a head sneaking a peek, with a pair of beautiful eyes focused intently on the situation in the ward, ears perked up.
When Jiang Shiyu realized Bai Yun had seen him, he froze for a moment and then shyly blinked at her.
Knowing he was concerned about Shen Li, she beckoned him over. He quickly walked in, wearing the smallest size of men’s hospital gown, which still hung loosely on him, making his already small face appear even smaller.
She felt a pang of sympathy for him. Ever since he moved into the Shen family, she had treated him like a half-son, showering him with affection.
When she learned that Shen Li had coaxed the naive Jiang Shiyu, she had pulled her son’s ear and scolded him severely, even cutting off his allowance for six months.
Throughout, she never uttered a harsh word to Jiang Shiyu and often told him that if Shen Li ever bullied him, he should report it, and she wouldn’t let that rascal off easily.
“Auntie Bai Yun.”
“The doctor told you to stay in bed and rest. Why are you out and about? Does your chest hurt?”
His soft bangs covered his forehead, and he looked down in a very well-behaved manner. His voice was gentle and refined. “It doesn’t hurt anymore. I wanted to come see Shen Li.”
She took his hand, feeling the coolness of his fingertips despite the midsummer heat. His lips didn’t look healthy either, but she couldn’t bear to scold him.
“Since you’re here, you might as well listen to the doctor’s treatment plan. We might need your cooperation later.”
He hadn’t expected Bai Yun to agree to let him stay. A smile spread across his face, revealing two small dimples. A nurse brought him a chair, and he sat down next to her.
After Shen Li woke up, his emotions were unstable, and he refused to cooperate with the doctors. They had no choice but to give him a sedative to make him sleep.
Lying in the hospital bed was a boy wrapped in bandages, even in his sleep his brows were furrowed, giving him a fierce and formidable look. As Jiang Shiyu listened attentively to the doctor’s explanation of Shen Li’s follow-up treatment plan, he couldn’t resist sneaking a glance at him.
His fingers, resting on his lap, instinctively twitched, wanting to smooth out the wrinkles between Shen Li’s brows.
After the consultation, the doctors left the room, leaving behind a caregiver. Jiang Shiyu, having been out for so long, was feeling tired and looked slightly pale. Seeing this, Bai Yun suggested that the caregiver take him back to rest.
He didn’t want to leave, but Bai Yun, understanding his thoughts, spoke gently, “Auntie knows you’re worried about Shen Li, but the doctor just said that he is young and strong, and he will recover quickly.
There’s no urgency with the memory loss; it won’t resolve in just a day or two. But you, on the other hand, have not been looking well these past couple of days. If Shen Li wakes up and you’re the one who falls ill, how will you help him recover his memory?”
He bit his lip, his delicate nose twitching slightly, then obediently nodded. “Auntie Bai Yun, I’ll go back now. Don’t worry about me.”
“Good, be a good child. Go ahead.”
