Chapter 23
After the competition, as expected, Jiang Shiyu won the championship. The trophy’s base was a crown, holding a crystal rose in the center, refracting different colors under the light.
Li Muzi and the others were waiting for him at the exit. As soon as he arrived, Li Muzi excitedly congratulated him, with Chen Xu echoing his sentiments.
“Shiyu, this trophy is so beautiful! It’s made of crystal, and there’s a rose in the middle.”
He handed the trophy over generously for Li Muzi to admire.
He and Chen Xu tilted their heads together to look at the trophy. Jiang Shiyu turned his gaze and locked eyes with Shen Li on the other side. Seeing the flowers in Shen Li’s arms, his eyes widened slightly.
His flowers.
He didn’t say anything but stared at the flowers in Shen Li’s hands, his face clearly saying, “Give them to me now.”
Shen Li handed over the flowers, and he quickly took them, lowering his head to smell them. It seemed he liked the flowers more than the trophy.
This realization made Shen Li inexplicably happy.
They took a cab to eat Cantonese food and then returned to school. Shen Li had a competition the next day, and he had managed to get the morning off to come here, but he had to go back for training in the afternoon. They parted ways at the school gate.
Li Muzi and Jiang Shiyu walked together, with Li Muzi nudging him with his shoulder. “The flowers from Shen Li?”
He had clearly been there earlier and saw him hand over the flowers, so why pretend not to know and ask again?
Jiang Shiyu pretended not to understand, blinking innocently. “Muzi, what are you talking about?”
“Jiang Shiyu, you’ve turned bad.” He pinched his cheek.
Jiang Shiyu laughed and dodged away.
“I don’t get you two. A while ago, you were at odds, and now you’re fine again. He spent five hundred yuan on such a small bouquet for you. Has Shen Li’s brain got water in it from swimming?”
Jiang Shiyu stopped in his tracks upon hearing this, looked at the flowers, and then at his friend. “What did you say? Five hundred yuan?”
“Yeah, as soon as you finished your performance, he ran out. When he came back, Chen Xu asked where he had gone, and he said he went to buy flowers. There’s no flower shop around the venue, so he said he bought them from someone at ten times the price. Rich people really can throw money around.”
While Li Muzi marveled at this, Jiang Shiyu took out his phone and messaged Shen Li.
**Cathead:** “The flowers you bought for me, five hundred yuan?”
Shen Li was in the locker room, preparing to change. He picked up his vibrating phone from the chair and replied with one hand.
**L:** “Have you reached the dorm? I’ll bring you takoyaki tonight.”
**Cathead:** “Not yet. I want extra ketchup.”
After sending that, Jiang Shiyu felt something was off and quickly typed another message. “Why waste money like that? Five hundred yuan for such a small bouquet, it’s wasteful!”
Seeing the exclamation mark at the end of the message, Shen Li imagined him standing in front of him, cheeks puffed out, fine eyebrows furrowed, scolding him with a look that seemed fierce but was actually adorably cute.
**L:** “It’s not wasteful. I’ll give you flowers for every competition in the future.”
Jiang Shiyu’s puffed cheeks deflated, and a suspicious blush spread across his face. Li Muzi, walking beside him, noticed his blushing, smiling face as he looked at his phone and leaned over, curious about what he was seeing.
Jiang Shiyu quickly covered his phone with his chest. “Muzi, you can’t just look at others’ private messages.”
Li Muzi withdrew his head. “What kind of privacy could a little kid like you have? It’s just messages with Shen Li, right?”
**Jiang Shiyu!!!**
“**Muzi!!!**”
As they approached the dorm, Jiang Shiyu took out his phone, looked around the empty hallway, then quickly typed.
**Cathead:** “No.”
After sending it, he felt it might be ambiguous, worried Shen Li would think he meant he couldn’t watch the competitions. So he quickly added another message.
**Cathead:** “No flowers, it’s wasteful.”
In the swimming pool.
A strong figure swam in the lane, moving through the water like a fish. His shoulders and neck muscles occasionally surfaced, revealing the power they contained.
At the poolside, the coach pressed the stopwatch and noted the time as Shen Li surfaced and removed his goggles.
“Better condition than yesterday. Did something good happen?”
Shen Li, still waist-deep in the water, reached for his phone on the poolside and glanced at it, smiling.
The coach, seeing his expression, clicked his tongue in surprise. “Look at you smiling like that. Are you in love?”
Shen Li’s confused gaze shifted from his phone to the coach. “What makes you say that?”
“A while ago, you were all grumpy and irritated, probably because of a fight. Now you’re all smiles again. Looks like you’ve reconciled, huh? Chatting with your significant other?”
Shen Li pondered. Was his mood really that obvious?
He had been irritable and unmotivated during his fallout with Jiang Shiyu, leading to poor swimming performance and frequent arguments with the coach. The coach had even asked Chen Xu and the others what was wrong with him, but they all shrugged and said they didn’t know.
Luckily, with the competition approaching, he had finally adjusted his state of mind.
“Listen, it’s fine to be in love, but don’t let it affect your performance. If it works out, great. If not, then end it. Your current relationship seems even more troublesome than the last one.”
He frowned. “The last one?”
The coach, playing with his stopwatch, said, “Yeah, the one you used to bring to the swimming pool often. The fair, well-behaved one.”
He immediately understood, threw down his phone, put on his goggles, and said, “It’s the same person.”
The coach pondered for a long time before muttering, “The same person? Didn’t Chen Xu say they broke up? When did they get back together?”
Sunday’s swimming competition was held at Jiang Hua’s own swimming pool. As the home ground, many students came to watch, and the cheerleading squad created a lively atmosphere.
Jiang Shiyu and Li Muzi were arranged by Chen Xu to sit in the front row, giving them a perfect view of the competition.
Behind them was the cheering section, equipped with banners and other support items, shouting, “Go Jiang Hua! Go Shen Li!”
Jiang Shiyu held a support banner that had been forcibly handed to him. According to the girl behind him, their front-row position made the banner more visible.
Before long, the contestants entered and started warming up. He immediately spotted Shen Li in the crowd, despite his face being half-covered by a baseball cap.
Shen Li, wearing a loose white T-shirt and silver-gray headphones, walked to the poolside and took off his shirt, revealing his well-defined abs, which drew screams from the girls in the cheering section behind Jiang Shiyu.
Jiang Shiyu thought, how many times has Shen Li’s abs photo been posted on the forum? Haven’t they seen it before?
Whether or not those girls had seen it, he had not only seen it but also touched it.
He hadn’t really touched them in a while, almost forgetting how they felt.
It was undeniable that among all the contestants, Shen Li was the most outstanding, not just because of his looks, but because of his natural confidence and ease, exuding a sense of determination to win.
After stretching, the contestants got ready at the starting point. Jiang Shiyu, holding his breath, clutched the banner tightly.
At the sound of the whistle, the contestants shot forward like arrows. Shen Li was in the middle lane, ahead of the second-place swimmer by half a body length.
The sound of the water, the splashing on the strong muscles, all the swimmers pushed forward with all their might. His back arched into a curve, surfacing occasionally like a whale, then diving back in.
In the pool, Shen Li was the absolute master, like a shark, with all his danger hidden beneath the surface, between each rise and fall.
At the turn, for the last lap, the second-place swimmer stayed close, constantly looking for an opportunity to overtake. The final hundred meters!
Jiang Shiyu’s heartbeat was irregular, fast and furious, but he couldn’t worry about it. His eyes were glued to the lane.
The final fifty meters!
Shen Li powered forward, accelerating like a dragon, pulling ahead by half a body length, and touched the wall first, igniting the crowd.
“Jiang Hua!! Jiang Hua!!!”
“Shen Li!!! Shen Li!!!”
“Shen Li, you’re the best! Ah, first place!”
Caught in the wave of celebration, Jiang Shiyu finally relaxed his tense body, releasing his tightly clenched lips. He won, Shen Li won.
The leaderboard showed him in first place, representing Jiang Hua.
“Congratulations, a perfect finish.”
The coach patted his shoulder at the poolside, proud of his most talented student to date.
“Thank you, Coach.”
There wasn’t much left to say. The surrounding cheers and applause enveloped him as he walked away.
The coach watched him leave, a colleague joining him in looking ahead.
“Hard to let go, huh?”
“Wouldn’t you be? It takes years to find such talent in the swimming team.”
“Nothing we can do. He’s the only heir of the Shen family. They wouldn’t let him stay in your little team forever.”
The coach crossed his arms and sighed. “I know, but it’s still a pity. But I believe, with his determination, he’ll achieve extraordinary things no matter what path he takes.”
Backstage, Shen Li changed clothes just as the announcement for the awards ceremony began. Walking towards the front, he spotted Jiang Shiyu in the front row.
Wearing a light blue shirt and shorts, holding something in his hand, he was chatting animatedly with the girls behind him.
He squinted, his gaze deep.
Quite popular.
Jiang Shiyu was busy dealing with the enthusiastic Shen Li fan club behind him. The girls, very friendly, chatted for a while and asked to add him to their fan club.
Before he knew it, he was in the group.
“The awards ceremony is starting!”
Amid the cheers, he quickly put away his phone and looked at the podium. Shen Li stood in the first place position, receiving the trophy and certificate from the school leaders, and then it was time for his speech.
The newly crowned champion stood at the podium, all glory and attention on him. He seemed accustomed to such occasions, showing no sign of nervousness, his posture relaxed and confident, his gaze firm. Holding the trophy in one hand and the microphone in the other, he spoke.
“Seize the moment.”
The four words sent the audience into a frenzy.
Seize the moment. As long as he wanted and did it, the present would be the most perfect answer.
Jiang Shiyu stared at the boy on stage, feeling as if time had flown back to his first day at the Shen family.
The boy holding a basketball, the sun shining behind him, exuding a vibrant and dazzling youthfulness.
It turned out, from the very first time, he was already moved.
