Chapter 1: Girlfriend's first love
On the evening of the Autumn Equinox, a light drizzle began to fall over Jiangcheng(a city name).
Lu Han stood by the window, phone in hand, his slender brows furrowed as he gazed out at the rain.
"The number you have dialed is powered off..."
He had lost count of how many times he had tried calling his girlfriend, Chu Ruoyan, but to no avail.
He glanced at the clock on the wall; it was already past eight in the evening.
What was going on?
Not only was she not back yet at this late hour, but her phone was also off.
Lu Han looked around the room, at the house he had meticulously prepared, and couldn't help but feel a wave of frustration.
Today was the second anniversary of his relationship with Chu Ruoyan.
He had taken the day off to come home early for this very reason.
He had cooked a table full of Chu Ruoyan's favorite dishes and prepared a special gift for her.
Women, after all, love surprises and romance.
What could be more surprising and romantic than proposing on such a special day?
But now...
"She must be too busy, that's why she forgot," Lu Han rubbed his temples, trying to console himself.
Indeed, as the CEO of a gaming company, Chu Ruoyan was always busy.
Especially in the last couple of weeks, she seemed to be working on some crucial project, often working late into the night before coming home.
Forget it, he would wait a little longer.
Perhaps she was already on her way back.
Bored, Lu Han sat on the sofa and started scrolling through his social media feed.
Suddenly, a photo caught his eye, and his heart clenched.
It was a picture from a concert, and although it was just the back of a woman, Lu Han recognized her immediately.
It was Chu Ruoyan, who had stood him up and was out of contact.
Above the picture was a line of text filled with emotion and joy.
"We once promised to watch Eason Chan's concert together. I never thought she would still remember after all these years."
Lu Han knew the person who posted this.
Ling Mo?
Wasn't he Chu Ruoyan's former crush?
When did he come back?
Lu Han's fingers turned white as he gripped his phone, his eyes suddenly cold.
He had heard that three years ago, this guy had suddenly gone abroad, leaving Chu Ruoyan, who hadn't even had the chance to confess her feelings, heartbroken.
It had taken Chu Ruoyan a long time to slowly move on from the shadow.
Even so, it had taken Lu Han a long time of relentless pursuit before Chu Ruoyan agreed to be his girlfriend.
Lu Han stared at the phone screen, feeling like a ridiculous joker.
His idol was Eason Chan, and he had naturally been following this concert.
A month ago, he had already invited Chu Ruoyan to go with him.
His initial plan was to propose to this woman at his idol's concert.
But Chu Ruoyan had refused, citing her dislike for celebrity chasing and her busy work schedule as reasons.
So, Lu Han had settled for a second-best plan.
But now, Chu Ruoyan had gone with Ling Mo instead. How fucking ironic!
Lu Han sneered; it turned out that Chu Ruoyan did want to go to the concert after all.
She had refused him because she still remembered her promise with Ling Mo.
So, in this woman's heart, the only person who could go to Eason Chan's concert with her was Ling Mo.
Lu Han also thought about how Chu Ruoyan had been leaving early and returning late over the past half month, often inexplicably smiling at her phone, and finally understood.
It seemed that Ling Mo had returned to the country around that time.
All that bullshit about being busy with work was just an excuse to secretly accompany her white moonlight.
Lu Han's face was full of self-mockery, so... what had he been for these two years? A stand-in for when Ling Mo was away?
Just at that moment, his phone rang. It was Chu Ruoyan calling back. Lu Han narrowed his eyes and pressed the answer button.
"Lu Han, my phone died, did you call me?" Chu Ruoyan's apologetic voice came through: "You must have been worried, it's my fault for forgetting to tell you, there was an urgent matter at the company today, I'm on a business trip to Rongcheng, and I won't be back tonight."
A business trip? Lu Han was almost amused by anger, if he hadn't seen Ling Mo's social media post, he might have actually believed this lie.
He didn't puncture the thin veil of deceit and calmly said, "Then when will you be back?"
"Tomorrow," Chu Ruoyan answered softly, then suddenly seemed to remember something, "By the way, I remember the day after tomorrow is our two-year anniversary, right?"
"There are quite a few luxury brand stores here in Rongcity."
"Is there anything you like that I can buy for you?" The woman's gentle voice came through, but it finally killed the hope in Lu Han's hanging heart.
If Chu Ruoyan wasn't completely preoccupied with her long-cherished white moonlight, how could she have mistaken such an important date?
"Whatever," Lu Han was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, "Chu Ruoyan, do you really love me?"
On the other end of the phone, Chu Ruoyan's heart skipped a beat. She looked at Ling Mo, who was walking towards her not far away, and couldn't help but feel a bit guilty.
"Why... why are you suddenly asking that?" Chu Ruoyan hesitated,
"Is it because I haven't been spending much time with you lately, so... you're feeling insecure?"
"How about this, we haven't gone out to relax in a while."
"After I finish this project, let's go on a trip, okay?" Such a simple question wasn't answered directly, instead, she rambled on with a bunch of nonsense. Lu Han lowered his eyes, filled with endless coldness.
Chu Ruoyan waited for several seconds but didn't hear Lu Han's voice.
Just as she was about to ask him what was wrong, Ling Mo had already arrived in front of her.
"Then it's settled, you go to sleep early, I have to deal with clients here."
Chu Ruoyan had to hurriedly hang up the phone, in case Ling Mo said something that Lu Han shouldn't hear.
"Yanyan, you suddenly disappeared, you scared me."
Sure enough, Ling Mo patted his chest, a look of concern on his face: "There are so many people here, I was really afraid I wouldn't find you."
"My phone died."
Chu Ruoyan waved the power bank she had just rented, although she had brushed off Lu Han on the phone, for some reason, she felt an inexplicable panic.
As soon as she turned on her phone, she received several text messages with missed call alerts.
In her haste, she hadn't thought of how to explain it to Lu Han.
So, her lie was actually quite clumsy.
But it seemed that Lu Han had believed it just like that.
She couldn't quite tell whether she felt more relieved or disappointed in her heart.
...
Lu Han, having been hung up on by Chu Ruoyan, looked even colder.
At this moment, the phone rang again.
He looked at the screen displaying "Old Man(hereinafter referred to as Old Bi Den)," frowned, and answered: "Hey, spit it out if you have something to say."
"Lu Han, can't you... be a little nicer to your dad?"
A helpless but guilt-filled voice came through: "It was my fault for losing you back then, but I've never given up looking for you all these years."
"I know you've suffered a lot outside, and I know you're angry with me."
"I won't force you to come back if you don't want to, but..."
Before he could finish, Lu Han interrupted him.
"Stop, can you not always spout this nonsense?"
Lu Han took a deep breath and said, "Isn't it just about me returning to the Lu family? I agree."
"What???"
An incredulous voice came through the phone, extremely excited: "Son, are you serious?"
Lu Han rolled his eyes in annoyance and said, "Don't call me son randomly, I haven't acknowledged you as my dad yet."
"Aiyo, as long as you're willing to come back, you can call me dad if you want."
The words coming from the other end were simply outrageous.
"Alright, stop being crazy."
Lu Han rolled his eyes and said irritably, "Send a car to pick me up in an hour."
After saying that, he hung up the phone directly.
After a while, he smiled silently.
Chu Ruoyan, since you're still longing for your white moonlight.
I'll grant you your wish.
