Chapter 14 - Lip Balm (2)
In the era where An Yun lived, although the dynasty was somewhat chaotic, but it wasn’t in complete disarray. The upper class vied for power and engaged in deadly struggles, but life continued normally for the people below. Thanks to the foundations laid by the previous dynasty, many lived relatively prosperous lives.
However, Xiao Cui’s words sparked an idea in An Yun’s mind.
High-end lip balm could make their complexion worse if not used regularly. This was because it contained cinnabar for color fixation, which was poisonous. Prolonged use on the face would naturally harm the skin.
Using cinnabar to fix colors in lip balm had been common since ancient times, even among flower growers. It wasn’t until much later that people discovered beeswax could replace poisonous cinnabar. As a result, cinnabar fell out of use for this purpose.
This lip balm was so expensive. If he could use beeswax to replace it, which was non-toxic and could reduce the cost, wouldn’t it be more profitable?
An Yun thought like this, and his eyes began to shine.
Xiao Cui looked at the fulang who was lifeless just moments ago. But now, his eyes were bright again. She didn’t know what good thing he had thought of, and there was even a smile on his lips.
Xiao Cui felt a little strange, and finally asked in a low voice, “Fulang, what did you think of and why are you so happy?”
An Yun was excited at that moment, and he didn’t think it was a big deal, so when Xiao Cui asked, he just said casually, “I thought of a good way, and I think I can make a lot of money!”
Xiao Cui became more and more confused when she heard this, and her eyes when looking at An Yun were full of entanglement. She felt that everything was fine with the fulang, but sometimes his thoughts were very strange.
An Yun was excited alone for a long time, from the production of lip balm, to the sales of lip balm, and finally to the scene where he saw himself making a lot of money.
When An Yun’s excitement subsided and he was about to look for tools to make things, he suddenly discovered that he didn’t have a single copper on him, not to mention the money to buy materials, not even the money to buy tools.
An Yun was stunned, and his enthusiasm immediately cooled down. He sat down on the chair, his mind full of annoyance. How could he have forgotten that a clever woman couldn’t make a living without rice, and he couldn’t even start the business without money? Fortunately, he was only excited just moments ago.
“Fulang, what’s wrong with you?”
Xiao Cui looked at An Yun, who had moments of confusion, happiness, and annoyance in one sitting. She felt that his expressions changed faster than turning the pages of a book, and she couldn’t figure out what was going on.
An Yun listened to Xiao Cui’s concerned words and turned to look at her. Suddenly, he thought he could borrow money from Xiao Cui and repay her once he made a profit.
Feeling unburdened as he wasn’t the head of the household, An Yun decided to directly share his thoughts with Xiao Cui.
However, when Xiao Cui heard An Yun’s request to borrow money, she looked at him in shock. Blushing, she explained, “Fulang, I don’t have any money on me. I gave it all to my parents as soon as I received my monthly wages.”
An Yun was slightly stunned. He had completely overlooked this possibility. After all, Xiao Cui was not a senior maid but merely a kitchen assistant.
Seeing An Yun’s disappointment, his eyes, which had been sparkling moments ago, lost their luster. Gritting her teeth, she finally said, “Fulang, how much do you need? I will go back and borrow it from my parents!”
An Yun was taken aback and glanced at Xiao Cui beside him. Seeing her determination, he feared that once she lent the money, it might be difficult for her to get it back.
Even in such circumstances, encountering such difficulties, there were still people around him willing to sacrifice for him, which made An Yun feel grateful.
An Yun smiled reassuringly at Xiao Cui. “No, I was just teasing you earlier. I have everything I need here—food, clothing, shelter—all provided. Why would I need to borrow money from you?”
Xiao Cui looked at An Yun, finding his expression too sincere to doubt his teasing. Despite his words, she felt a sense of relief in her heart.
Though she accepted his teasing, Xiao Cui wasn’t entirely certain whether her parents would lend her money if she asked.
An Yun perked up, exchanged a few words with Xiao Cui, and awaited the maid to bring him water for washing. After washing up, he laid down on the bed.
Feeling the breeze drifting in through the window, An Yun found himself thinking deeply for the first time that evening and didn’t fall asleep quickly.
His thoughts circled back to the starting point: he lacked money and needed to earn some. That was why he thought of making lip balm.
To make money from making lip balm, he needed funds to purchase the necessary tools.
Without money for tools, there would be no lip balm to sell, resulting in a continuous lack of funds.
An Yun pondered this for a while, concluding that he had to bide his time and wait for an opportunity, perhaps from the young master gifting him a few golden beans.
An Yun was always patient, mentally preparing himself for the possibility that this opportunity might not arise for another ten days or even longer.
Unexpectedly, a few days later, Xiao Cui brought news to An Yun that suddenly sparked hope within him.
